Windows Media Player 11 & MP4
I can play a video file MP4 with WMP11 from an external hard drive and an SD card using ffdshow codecs, but it will not exactly play the same file copied to the internal hard drive of the PC. When I try to read a file in the C: drive for example MP4, WMP11 stops and displays the message «the selected file has an extension (.)» that is not recognized by Windows Media Player." So, any ideas why WMP11 recognizes and play a MP4 file on an external drive, but not on a hard drive internal?
Thanks but the problem is solved. The command 'open' for .mp4 files in the registry must be changed from "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" '%1' to 'C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe"/Open"% ". Simple really! Then the files .mp4 plays well with the codecs installed "ffdshow".

Codecs for MP4 (Windows Media Player)
I downloaded videos with my Windows Media Player 11. But now I get a message that my drive does not support MP4 extensions. I tried to get the codecs I need and ended up with some other flash drives. How can I install the codec for the necessary codec for Windows Media Player?
Hello Janet,.
Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community and we give the opportunity to help you.
The file format MPEG-4, as defined by the MPEG-4 specification, contains encoded MPEG-4 video and audio content encoded AAC Advanced Audio Coding. He usually uses the .mp4 extension.
Windows Media Player does not support playback of the .mp4 file format.
You can reproduce .mp4 media files in Windows Media Player when you install the decoders compatible DirectShow MPEG-4 packs. MPEG-4 compatible DirectShow decoders packs include the Ligos LSX-MPEG Player and the EnvivioTV player.
See the article mentioned below which contains more details about the same:

Windows Media Player 11 cannot show MP4 video but can hear the sound
Hi all, I prefer WMP on the other players, because he is able to play most of my MP4 without any lag. However, there are some MP4 files that do not show the Visual but audio is heard when I played against them on WMP. Interestingly, when the same MP4 files are played on other players, audio and video are very good. I take so that the files are ok, but may need to change the system or WMP.
Appreciate any advice. I'm on Windows XP and WMP ver 11.0.5721.5280. Thank you very much.

Hello
my windows media player doesn't just play everything that carries the mp4 extension, it keeps saying "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or does not support the codec used to compress the file. »
If I rename the extension to any other extension m4v for example, videos play normally, but if I change it back to mp4 it gives the error message
someone knows the solution for this problem

The dialog box that you quoted says "Project file" in Windows Live Movie Maker
It would be a file with an extension WLMP. Or if the file was created with
an earlier version of Movie Maker, it can have an extension .mswmm.So... just to clarify... MP4 extension or WLMP or something else?
If the files are MP4, you will need to convert them to WMV format before
import into Movie Maker. There are many programs that can do conversions...
The following freeware is an example...:(FWIW... it's always a good idea to create a system)

(the file you want to download is: > FFSetup250.zip
(FWIW... installation..., you might want to
Uncheck all of the boxes on the last screen)First... after the download and installation of Format
Factory... you can open the program and
left click on the toolbar, the "Option" button and
"Select an output folder to" / apply / OK.
(this is where you find your files after they)
are converted)Drag and drop your video clips on the main screen...
Select "all to WMV" / OK...
Click on... Beginning... in the toolbar...
That should do it...
