  If chkdsk does not resolve your hard drive, then you will need in the end not completely reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows.  Before doing so, however, you must save as much data as you can to an external USB hard drive.  If your system boots, then save as much as the hard drive will allow.  If your system does not start, then you should try to boot from a bootable CD that will support USB drives (I prefer free Linux Livecd such as Knoppix), then again until you can.

  To reinstall Windows, many computers have a recovery Partition that will restore your computer to its State as purchaser which can be activated by pressing a combination of keys special at the time where the manufacturer splash screen goes back to the start.  Read quickly, find the appropriate key combination and press it to reinstall Windows - well in your case, it seems that you have an installation CD.  If the request to do a 'Quick format' or 'Regular Format', do not select Quick format.

  If you need instructions to create a bootable XP Recovery CD of Console, we can predict that too (just ask).

  After booting into the Recovery Console, you should be in this folder:

  C:\WINDOWS

  For each of your hard disk partitions, you must then run:

  Chkdsk /r

  For example, at the Recovery Console prompt, enter:

  CHKDSK c: /r

  If I hold down ESC at startup I get a minimal installation but only to change the time and date.

  I agree with kody. You can try to fix it using windows advanced option menu. Maybe you can also try to repair Windows by using the recovery console. Problem is that this option can be used with Microsoft WXP CD facilities and not with supplied recovery media.

  I'll look into your question. But in the meantime, boot from the CD and rerun the Recovery Console. When you get the C:\ prompt, type the following

  You cannot download Windows Xp. However, you can try to repair your current installation by using the Recovery Console. Download the recovery from HEREConsole. Unzip the folder choose Extract the iso file to your desktop for convenience. Click HERE for the instructions to burn the iso image. You need to a blank cd. Once you've burned the image, you will need to boot from the cd.

  1. Insert the CD from Recovery Console in your CD-ROM drive and restart your computer. If you are prompted, select any options needed to start (boot) on the CD. (Usually the message will be "Press any key to boot from cd")
     
  2. when the text portion of Setup begins, follow the prompts. Select the repair or recovery option by pressing R.
     
  3. If you have a dual-boot or multiboot system, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
     
  4. When you are prompted, type the administrator password. If you have not set a password for the account admin simply press on enter

  Sometimes when I turn on my PC I get a message error "C:\windows\system32\config\system.log is damaged and unreadable.  Please run the chkdsk utility. "Sometimes, when I turn it on it freezes in windows journal page, or just after the connection often (accompanied by a long beep after these two occurrences).  I have run chkdsk but it does not appear to have contributed.  Sometimes, the PC boots normally.

  I guess that you have run the chkdsk utility with the "/ F" or "/ R" option.

  Another thing you can try is to clear your system log file.  To do this, start the event viewer:
  Start-> Run-> "eventvwr.msc".
  or
  Start-> programs-> administration-> event viewer tools.

  Once it starts, find the 'system' in the left column, right-click on it and select "clear all events.
  I hope that this will reset the file and get rid of your mistakes.

  When you run chkdsk in RC, did you use the /r switch? This is the key! In other words, this should be the command:

  Chkdsk /r

  (there is a space before the slash)

  Moreover, KB307545 can be run safely on most OEM XP installations. Of course, nothing is guaranteed 100%.

  Before you do this or else, you really must ensure all data is stored safely. One way to do this is to start on a live Linux CD and then copy the files to an external hard drive.
