KB 2756918 & KB 2742596 updates keep resurfacing as need to install. I checked the settings of the computer and it shows that they have properly been installed 10 times via automatic update, but they always appear as need to install. I have Windows XP Pro.
Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. Why Windows Update tells me to download "new" updates, when they were listed as installed successfully 2 days ago?
I suggest you to follow the steps in troubleshooting this article and check if it helps.
Windows Update or Microsoft Update repeatedly offers the same update

Well, the title of my post was just to make things seem worse than they really are. But I think it's a bug, not less.
I just installed Windows Security Essentials. "Windows Update" keeps me showing that there are both updates optional available through the installation of "Windows Security Essentials". They are updated definition for this software. They are two 3.7 MB. KB, KB2310138, numbers are both the same, but the details see the numbers of different virus definition. The definition of a 1.97.1086.0 and the other is 1.97.840.0. If I install one updates it installs correctly and everything is fine, except that Microsoft Update tells me there is 1 additional optional upgrade for me to install which is annoying and misleading. If I install "both" the KB2310138 updated simultaneously or in succession he confused Windows Update all together and go back to square 1 saying that there is 'optional' 2 updates I can install it. I don't know what is happening, but there is definitely a bug in the middle of all this chaos.
Maybe someone could tell me if these "Windows Security Essentials" definition updates are cumulative, so that if you later you don't need all the updates of prior definition or are non-cumulative? Thank you.

I am running XP Pro. Update of security alerts KB972270 and KB982132 continue to flow upward on a daily basis since early March 2012 even if I installed these updates 4 or 5 times. How can I stop these alerts continually to come.
Hello Shandi K,.
In this case, can you put the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file in a public folder on http://skydrive.live.com?
After that, please post the link on this thread so that the community can look at the newspaper.
You can watch the next thread to get a file on your skydrive instructions more detailed on poster:

I prefer to choose what updates I receive. No, I never use "automatic updates". I don't have Office 2007. Whenever I turn on my computer updated tells my "new updates are available"... but it's the same update, I uncheck every time. Is it possible to set this kind accepts updates updates thatI don't WANT OFFICE 2007 and managed to stop offering the same thing repeatedly. It's a waste of time and if there is no way to do leave offer the same update I still refuse... SHOULD THERE BE!
I need a frame that says: "if I rejected this particular update. STOP ASKING ME!.
If you do not want to install an update via windows update, right-click the update, and click Hide update
The update you selected will be hidden, and windows appear yet again for this update notifications
hope this helps

Successful installation KB2478663 & KB2518870, then a few minutes later was offered the same updates. I installed these 2 updates 20 times, always with success! How can I stop this from happening? This also happens with the new KB 2533523 & 2468871 Ko.
I didn't have that, but I just noticed for the first time in weeks, I don't have updates pending! It seems that something cured my problem so I was away for 5 days?
In any case, I'll see how long this lasts. Thanks for the help.
For the last two months, a notice appears telling me that there are updates ready to install. After closing the evening, I let the machine go through the installation process. However, in the morning, the notice of update is still in place. The specific uupdates are KB 979909 KB 982524 KB 982168. How can I get to install them or how can I get rid of them entirely (since they seem to have little interest in my surgery)?

This is the third time that I am a request for assistance with this problem.
I have Vista Home Premium, 32-bit sp1. HP Pavilion PC, about 2 years. Norton Internet Security, Malwarebytes and Defender on.
Since September 8, I was offered various updates. I can't install the 6 following updates:
I have install, update says that they have been installed successfully. they next day, they are offered again and if I go to view installed updates that are not there, although that still listed as installed with success in the history of the update. Note: I do NOT receive the error messages.
The first response to my original message does not understand my problem because he told me to uninstall the updates I had already said were not there. I followed his other recommendations anyway (try to install the updates in the clean boot state) and it made no difference.
The second speaker suggested reset components Windows Update (who has not made a difference) and using the system update tool (which apparently, the site said I didn't need).
Any other ideas? I'm trying to update my system and do not feel I can do so until that these issues would be resolved.
Try this 1st to see if it helps, and it should:

Troubleshooting Windows Update or Microsoft Update when you are repeatedly offered an update
Or in the alternative, notify us of updates and maybe we can move forward.
Repeatedly offered Windows Update is (KB2565063), but when I try to install it continues for long periods of time with no progression of the installation made.
As I try to download the "vcredist_x86.exe" file is what is happening in the install window:Install window:'Security check of the file' progress is progressing at a normal speed and finishes very quickly his task. Progress bar goes green in less than 15 sec.Lower than:On the Installation progress bar: it seems to work (small circle is moving to the right), but he never makes any progress installation file. I have let it run up to 30 min with no Visual progression. The file that is trying to be loaded at the bottom is: "msp_KB2565063"... the KB2565063 is the update file in the original post, I had trouble downloading.Other suggestions?Thank youRandyUPDATED: 16/06/12Problem solved. I uninstalled all the files of MS Visual Basic C++ on the computer and re-installed as needed. The update that I had a problem with installed without problem. Thanks for the help on this issue.

I tried to follow all the recommendations describwd here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910339 but the problems remain.
Can someone help me?
go to update the site matches click on and check the box "do not show again".
Anyone has any idea why? I just run SFC/scannow and restarted the computer, but no joy.
Thank you for your help. When I wrote the first time, I had already tried your mentioned basic steps. : D I was troubleshooting computers for friends and family for a long time, and I'm a fan of CCleaner (one of the first things I install on any computer!). Unfortunately, they had not solved the problem.
I have not run Windows repair tool. It is a work computer, and because my colleague use it almost all the time, I didn't have enough time to play with him. Anyway, he had a program called "Advanced Systemcare v.6" that someone had already loaded. A scan with the program detected and repaired something that solves the problem of failure of Windows Update.
But I will keep your advice in mind. During the next update Tuesday, if updates not yet once again, I'll try the Windows repair tool.
