Hello

Error code 80070005 means generally that you're not quite allowed to install updates. Access may be denied if you have logged on to the computer as a standard user and this account does not have permission to install updates.

To resolve the problem follow the steps that are listed in the methods below in the order listed, starting with method 1.

Method 1:

Log the computer as an administrator or as a user with administrative rights.

Method 2:

One of the most common causes of this error code (access denied) is the Anti Virus and Anti Spyware software running on the computer. You can try to disable them, and then try the updates again.

Note: run the computer without antivirus software or firewall is a potential threat to the computer; Be sure to activate security software after completing the troubleshooting steps and after identifying the problem.

  • Vista - Windows Update fails and defender gives the error code: 0 x 80080005

Well, I downloaded Veoh Web Player and DivX player (with a driver package) almost the exact same time, so I don't know who caused the problem. (Guessing Veoh done.) I restored system which usually solves it for me and then uninstalled both programs and even if my computer is not nearly as slow as it was when they were both installed, it's always problems. Windows open frequently stops responding. As I said, the system restore only makes it better for a short time while longer I go without eating, the freezier my computer becomes. I also noticed that for about 2-3 days (after which my computer almost completely freezes and I have to startup repair) most minor cosmetic changes.

I use Firefox, so the first change I noticed was that left side of the address bar in a small half circle in a regular square. Tiny. Then the scroll bars on all the programs I've used lost their Aero look and returned to normal, old style Windows. Eventually good menus click lose their new look, then all the start menu, and finally Windows Explorer stops working and all the windows, when not in use, become small tabs at the bottom of the screen. After that the computer hangs almost entirely.

Each time I restart or system restore the first thing I see is a little box that says that a Windows host process has stopped working. Windows Update continually fails and Windows Defender gives the error code 0 x 80080005. What can I do? I looked for answers before coming here to help and what I read it looks like a downloaded driver can interfere with the host process, even if I uninstalled it (supposedly) all. Thank you.

Applications, (Norton and McAfee) are known to not uninstall (or upgraded) themselves.

    1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

  • Windows update fails and shows code error 80070490

Hello, I have Windows Vista Home Premium, 32-bit operating system and installed Service Pack 2.

I set Windows to update automatically, but I noticed today that this wasn't working properly, so I clicked on "check for updates" and she came back with the following message:
"Windows could not search for new updates, error found: Code 80070490 Windows update encountered an unknown error.

Under the error message, it lists that the ' most recent Check for Updates "was on 11/25/2009 and"updates have been installed"on 11/25/2009.
But when I checked "View update history" to see updates did not, all the updates that are listed have actually managed, no updates have been identified as having failed. The last update was actually - definition update for Windows Defender on 12/29/2009 - and the previous update - update for the Microsoft XML Core Service Pack 2 (KB973688) 25 / 11 / 2009.

I had this same problem earlier this year with the code 80070490 error come when I tried to update Windows and after trying all the solutions suggest online (including the assisted Microsoft Online Support), I had to contact the Support of Tecnical Microsoft on the phone and he needed someone to help me create a completely new Windows which meant that I lost everything in my old windows.

I don't want to go through this again, can anyone help?

I'll give you three options then I'm outta here for the new year.

    1.

Visit the Microsoft Solution Center and antivirus security for resources and tools to keep your PC safe and healthy. If you have problems with the installation of the update itself, visit the Microsoft Update Support for resources and tools to keep your PC updated with the latest updates.

2 uninstall SP2, and then recover (AKA repair installation) by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958044.

    3. backup of personal data (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then do a format and clean install of Windows.

  • TB update fails and I get an error of access denied to 7 - Zip when you download a new version.

Thunderbird was not able to update from version 24.6.0 (under Windows 7). Whenever I try to auto update, it tells me that the update fails. When I let the updater download a full version, which also fails. When I try to download a new version manually, during the extraction process, I get an error message indicating "7-Zip" up and "Access denied" in the window. I followed all the suggestions to the support download error page (as an administrator, stop the process of Thunderbird, etc.), and none of them solved the problem. Any other ideas?

What firewall / anti-virus software you are using. My guess is that the firewall or the anti virus software blocks both the update and full installation because it contains ZIP files. I have not heard that outside the paranoid company / parameters of business in the past, but there's always a first time.

  • After that windows update computer now hangs at the login screen, no error message, just restarts.

I have tried safe mode, does the same thing; tried to use the Windows Vista disc to do a repair, no luck; also I tried restoring the system (from disk), no restore points however.
The problem appeared after restarting the computer during the night.  The problem began to be able to connect, but the screen would go blank with just a pointer (KSOD).  Has tried some of the suggestions on this problem, including by eliminating sys newspapers, which did not work as well as reinstalling the video driver, with no luck.  Finally tried a system restore, returned 1 week (before the windows updates).  Now, the computer becomes just the login screen sits there for about 5-10 seconds then restarts immediately.

I just had this happen to my laptop that has no external references. This is a new (September 09) ASUS K50ij with Vista 64-bit installed. I bought the Win 7 OS to replace, but have been waiting for the time to play with it... Last Monday, the update itself and invited to restart so I have done what I was busy with and enabled him to restart which is the only thing to do now... restart, the blue screen for a nano-second, then restart... etc. Same problem with safe mode and safe mode with networking, or with the box... anyway, someone very smart recommended that I use another computer (Fortunately, I have several) to download free Imgburn (which works easily), then get Ubuntu (Linux Operating System free download) burn image from the Ubuntu disc, put the disc in the drive of the computer crashed (there is a little hole next to the button you) can insert in a safety pin to release the door when the power is off) change the setting in the BIOS of the computer has crashed by restarting and pressing F2 until you get the menu BIOS... go to the start menu and choose Start from the CD, and then press ENTER. When the computer starts, it will see the drive and go to a menu to select the language, then next choice is "try Ubuntu without making any changes to the computer. It will boot the disk and allow you to view and copy ALL your files off the power on an external drive, which is what I did... including my Outlook .pst files that include all my saved emails my calendar and contacts, etc! WOOHOO! has got all my photos, documents, etc. The only thing that I didn't know how to get is my favorite... How to enter in the browser from another computer.

If after this, an hour or more than make sure I got all the important data... I decided to see if anyone had a solution to this problem just fixing... I probably won't update again because Microsoft sends them and offers no solutions to the problems they have caused and nobody pays me for all the time I've lost get to get my stuff back and also to solve the problem they have caused. A update on my other laptop Win 7 zapped my outlook program and even reinstall it didn't solve this problem, even more work to do there, but looking in the files using Ubuntu's File Explorer, I found a hidden file that is used to repair the files .pst outlook called scanpst, or something that nearby.

In any case, if someone has a solution to uninstall the recent update or to determine how it corrupted my user profile (which is the general consensus) please let me know.
Thank you and good luck to you!

Since it is a Dell computer, chances are a Norton or McAfee free trial is preinstalled. When you have done the clean install, the free trialware would have ALSO reinstalled (but not valid now).  Let's see if the execution of two removal tools & a few tweaks resolves the behavior.

[You can print these instructions for reference offline. [If a step said to restart, restart! ]

    1. click right on the following link to download the Norton removal tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

1B. right click on the following link to download the tool McAfee Consumer Product Removal, save it to your desktop: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    3. double-click on the file that you saved in # 1 a above, to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

    3. double-click the file that you saved in # 1 b above to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then reboot again.

4 start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove programs. Set Program Access and Defaults: select (check) the CUSTOM [<>] configuration option, and then click the arrows pointing to the far-right | Browser: select "Internet Explorer" here (to not "use my current... »). [1]

    9. open Internet Explorer (only!) at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com . Select CUSTOM and scan | See if you can install all the available now security updates (i.e., KB2660465, KB2647516 or KB2661637).

I could download it and save it to my desktop so I am confident that it is not a problem with the link itself or the file is available for download with success.
