  Please follow these steps and check if the problem persists.
   
  Step 1:
   
  I suggest that you run the SFC scan on your machine to check if the problem is caused by a lack or file system damage (S).
   
  Step 2:
   
  You can uninstall and reinstall Windows Media Player, and check.

  I can't play a media file using IE9.  The codec is installed to .wmv.  The file will play locally and in Firefox, but not in IE9.  What I see in the lower corner of the media player, it's open..., tracking... and then change of media.  The next thing I get is the following message from Windows Media Player

  I had a look around at some of the answers on the site, but to be honest has been quite complicated for me! I tried to put my XP in safe mode, but she was having none of it.

  This problem has been around for a few days now, since I got a virus. I struggled to open the .exe files, and even worse, it is that when I go into control panel I can't open anything in here no more! Not even my file system restore to a point.

  Can anyone recommend anything? This is the second time I am running Malwarebytes. Did I post the logfile when it's done?
