WRT54G security

I want to add security to my router.  I understand that I can choose wpa and enter a phrase for a password code.  However, I don't want to have to enter the code everytime I turn on my wireless laptop.  Also, I have a DVDE drive that hooks wireless internet through the router to allow downloading movies from netflix.  Whenever I turn on the dvd player I don't want to go into the settings and enter a password.  Is it possible that I can record the password to connect to my laptop and dvd player? Thank you.

Carl

It will be either save autimatically or it will ask you if you want to save the password.

  • Is the (1.02.8) WRT54Gv4 disable Secure Easy Setup (SES) aka Wi - Fi Protected Access (WPA) or not?

My router went by default by any action of my own & research how can have access to a router secure otherwise, I found on the hole wide open in the default configuration in most of the routers available today:

    According to Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Protected_Setup
"The flaw allows a remote attacker retrieve the WPS PIN code and, with it, network WPA/WPA2 pre-shared key in a few hours.

Cisco/Linksys are aware of the vulnerability, but I saw no recent updates:

Specifically, nothing on the web shows a solution for the WRT54Gv5:

Note: This list is also in the sticky article "Vince" titled: update on status of vulnerability WPS for Linksys devices

but, unfortunately, this list has not been updated in months - and - though - it does not list my WRT54Gv5 router anyway.

In fact, the indications are that disabling Secure Easy Setup (SES) does actually disable whatever it is (in some cases):

Worse still, I called Cisco customer service:

-They didn't know what I was talking about 1-877-770-4113

-1-800-326-7114 Cisco Consumer Support for Linksys (they opened a ticket for me)

The strangest thing that came out of this support ticket has been the support guys came back (after leaving the phone for 20 minutes) only to say that disabling easy setup (SES) Secure option actually makes the router even MORE vulnerable.

When I insisted on some sort of explanation of this embarrassing problem - he says to ask me here on the forum.

    Ok. I ask...

Q: is - what the definition of Secure Easy Setup to 'turn off' disables really safe easy installation on the WRT54Gv5 router?

    If it isn't...

Q: what is the recommended method to protect against this vulnerability on the Linksys WRT54Gv5 router

Note: My firmware is updated to the latest revision, 1.02.8.

CERT 723755: Does the Linksys/Cisco WRT54Gv4 (1.02.8) really disable Secure Easy Setup (aka Wi - Fi Protected Access)?

Your router has the option for WPA2 Personal. You need to access the router interface so that you can select this type of security.

Please click the link below and it will give you steps how to configure security wireless with your router:

  • WRT54GS won't allow security

I'm trying to enable security wireless to my WRT54GS router and it won't work. I have consulted the router through my browser (192.168.1.1) but when I go under wireless > it doesn't let me change the menu drop down menu off off wireless security. I tried all the options on the menu drop down and it automatically comes out the back. I tried to reset to factory settings, but that didn't fix the problem either. Any thoughts?

Try using a different browser such as Google Chrome or Firefox.

  • Security WRT54G problems

I see a lot of posts here that address of wireless security, but I have a few questions that I can't find answers to. I apologize if I missed something.

I'm running a wrt54g ver.2. I don't think that the firmware has already been upgraded (how do you know for sure?). Two PC will access the internet through the router, either wireless or wired connection at different points in time.  A PC running XP, the other runs Windows7. There will eventually be a laptop running Windows7.

    QUESTIONS

    1. I changed the router access password. The first time I connected wireless, I had to provide the password. Since then, I have not been invited for the password when connecting. I don't know that I deliberately did something to cause the router to allow this specific computer to connect without providing a password again: I may very well have done something I don't remember not or that I have not to the achieve of time was to "Save" the password. Is there a way to verify that other computers, which have not already provided the password, it will prohibit to connect? Like, is there a place I can display using 192.168.1.1 which will definitively confirm course status?
    2. Is the password to connect the same as the password for the management of the router put in place through 192.168.1.1? The reason I am wondering is that I am still able to get to 192.168.1.1 with the admin password. I have not tried using admin from a computer that is already connected to the internet via the router. -What makes the difference?
    3. In the same sense that question #2, https in 192.168.1.1 option affect only computers that are not connected to the internet through the router? I haven't specified the https option. My concern is that once I have specify the https option, I won't be able to get to 192.168.1.1, because my computer is not a valid certificate.
    4. Y at - it a display by 192.168.1.1 which will show you which computers are connected?
    5. The firmware update will bring extra security?

    TIA,

    Phil

    <3. this="" ones="" a="" good="">lu>

Yes. This is one I had read entirely and returned through more than once. I was pretty well convinced of the position of the expert called (9000 + posts was?), until I read this:

    <10 locks="" are="" more="" secure="" than="" 2.="" why="" don't="" you="" use="" 10?="">

I'm always a bit wary when someone tries to make a point with this kind of rhetoric, instead of the straighforward more ' well 10 locks may be safer than the 2, I'd use more than 2 because...» ». This is the part 'because' who is absent. So I left not being not sure what position is more convincing.

    4. maybe you can try Network Magic.

OK, I just downloaded the free trial version. I'll reportbravohelen:

  • With the wrt54g router wireless security - separates the WLAN LAN clients

I have a wrt54g router and want to separate clients WLAN access to computers and servers on the local network... in other words, I want to make a 'guest' network I put the router in 'router' instead of 'bridge' mode I want just to be sure if it's the best thing I can do in terms of transforming the network wireless in an isolated.

Check out the 3rd party firmware like dd - wrt.

  • lose connection when I secure my WRT54GS

I feel I've read everything anyone ever wrote on securing my router.  I tried all this and reset the router at least 50 times to the factory settings. I can't get the secure router. If I change the WEP key and generate a password, I get a msg of error about security is not not compatible with my computer. Even change the SSID, etc.. The only success I've had is to change the admin password. The only way I can be on it if it is not secure.  Help! Anyone?

To configure wireless security, you must use a computer that is connected to the router.

Where to find the settings on the router: the router login password is usually on one of the pages 'Administration '. Other settings are all found in the "Wireless" section of the router configuration pages, 192.168.1.1

First of all, give your router a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys".
Make sure that "Broadcast SSID" is set to "enabled".

Then leave the router by default (with the exception of the unique SSID) wireless settings and then use your pc to a wireless connection to the router. Test your wireless Internet connection and make sure that it works correctly. You must have a working connection order before you configure security wireless Wi - Fi.

To implement wireless security, you must do a step at a time, then make sure you can always connect your computer wirelessly to the router.

Then, encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption than all your wireless devices will support. Common methods of encryption are:

WEP - poor (see note below)
WPA (sometimes called PSK or WPA with TKIP) - good
WPA2 (sometimes called PSK2, or WPA with AES) - best

WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal" and "business." Most home users should use "personal." In addition, if you have the choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES. With any method of encryption, you must provide a key (sometimes called a "password").

Wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have to be put in place with the SSID, encryption method and key that matches what you have entered in the router.

Test your system again and check that your Internet connection still works correctly.

And don't forget to give a new password to login to your router.

Choose passwords (keys): you should never use a Word from the dictionary as a password. If you use a Word from the dictionary as a password, or WPA2 can be cracked in a few minutes. When you take your login password and key encryption (password or password), you must use a random combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters and numbers letters, but no spaces. A connection password, must be 12 characters or more. WPA and WPA2 passwords must be less than 24 characters. Note: Your key, password or password should not be a space in it.

Most individuals should have their routers defined so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your password needs to be increased to a minimum of 24 random characters.

An additional problem is that Windows XP requires SP3 run WPA2.   Vista (with or without service pack) can run WPA2.

    Note:
WEP is not recommended. The FBI has shown that WEP can be cracked in a few minutes using software tools that are readily available on the Internet. Even a random character long password will not protect you with WEP. You should preferably use WPA or WPA2 encryption.

  • XBox 360 will not connect to the secure WRT54GS network.

Have you tried the suggestions we found in the forums for the connection manually and we continue getting a connection error. We rebooted the modem and the router as well, and the XBox 360 do not always connect. Any ideas how to make so that it can connect to our secure network without messing up the network that we have already had to reset and set again only a couple of weeks and don't want to go there again.

It turns out that the problem was with the Xbox360 not its wireless sensor and refusing to install the correct programming for it. Had well cleared.

  • Connection with a switch EZXS55W or a second router WRT54G to my router network WTR300N home?

I have a home office in my basement with my computer connected to a lan of my WRT300N router that is set up on the first floor and networking with three additional computers to the floor as well. I want to add 2 additional computers in my basement and wireless is not a good set upward because the signal strength is very low. I have great reception on the floor and even on the second floor where my children are connected from their rooms. My question is: I have an older WRT54G Router I use is more and want to know if I can connect it to my WRT300N using the lan line ran down in the basement which is connected to one of the Ethernet ports of the WRT300N? If so, how the connection and set up the second router? Also, I can use Ethernet cables to connect my three computers to the second router or what I need to use the wireless of the second router? I was looking at the switch EZXS55W at the Wal-Mart local and thought that was my answer, but after a search through all the answers of the basis of knowledge here, I'm confused on the approach to take and which one would be the best game for me. Here, any help would be great!

With the EZX you extended your wired LAN. You can still use the WRT54G to add another point for other cable ports and wireless access. Just do these 4 steps as stated in my previous post.

You can connect the WRT54G the WRT300N or the EZX. Basically, it's all the same. You don't have to turn off the switch before you connect a device.

If you want to use the additional wireless WRT54G, you can try to set up a roaming wireless network. Implement the WRT with identical settings as on the WRT300N wireless, i.e. identical SSID and wireless security the same (preferably WPA2) personal with a good password. Do not turn off the SSID broadcast on either WRT. Only the allocation of channels should be different at a time to avoid any interference. Now the devices should be able to move from one access point to another without losing the network connection.

However, if you perform this configuration test carefully. I don't know how it works if you have a N Router and a G. If this does not work, use different SSID on both. You can then choose which SSID to connect to on the client.

  • Suggestion for setting up a good secured router including wireless routers

I've owned three routers LinkSys Wireless since May 2007: two WRT54G (V6 and V8) and my current V1 E3000.  All provided configuration options that can do if it is very difficult, if not impossible, for unauthorized access to my WiFi routers.

All changes must then your system is connected to one of the router's Ethernet ports and not through WiFi due to the modification point #3 of "General Suggestions.

All the elements in square brackets by "<>" are the titles of LinkSys Admin web pages or sections of web pages.  Don't forget to click "Save Settings" on a single web page before you go to another web page or your changes will be lost.

Please note that not all pages of the LinkSys Router Web Admin can use the titles of Section-page/website such as used in this suggestion.

Make sure you know MAC address and physics of your wireless adapter so that it will be necessary for the point #3 «Proposals WiFi»  Assuming that you have a Microsoft Windows-based system, use a 'Command Prompt' to issue command ' ipconfig/all' to determine the MAC address (aka physical) of your adapter WiFi wireless connected to a router.

After all the suggested changes, repeat the process to ensure that the changes have been saved.

    GENERALS.

    (1) < administration/mgmt=""> change the Admin password to one of your choice.

    (2) access to disable HTTP and HTTPS allow access.  After that it changed was recorded, you must reconnect to the router via note https://192.168.1.1 URL using httpS or http (without S) for a secure connection to the router admin web pages.

    (3) in Wireless disable access to the Admin web pages.  Must use the Ethernet port on the router.

    (4) in disable remote management AND disable UPnP - UPnP (a well-known Protocol should can route diversion if enabled).

    Specific suggestions of WiFi.

    (1) in turn off the SSID broadcast.  This will prevent the intruders 'driveby' to see the SSID of LinkSys Router.  Make sure that change you the default SSID of your choice.

    (2) in set your security level to the WPA or WPA2 (preferred WPA2).  Do NOT use WEP because it's encryption algorithm can be cracked in less than 5 seconds.  This will protect your transmissions between your system and the router.  The E series routers are supported both WPA/WPA2 depending on the client configuration.  My WRT54G routers would support only WPA or WPA2.

(3.) in Select AES, TKIP not as security consultants have recently discovered a flaw in TKIP encryption crackable.

4.) Select a passphrase that you and systems all allowed must be used to secure your router connections.

    (5) in the enable filtering MAC and "Allow only PC" whose MAC addresses are defined in the .  Both of these changes will require that you register addresses MAC and physical of all wireless clients that allow you to connect to your network router.  Failure to record the physical address/MAC system will refuse this system to access your network, even if they have the correct passphrase AES and SSID.

    1. disable the SSID broadcast is useless. Any Drivede will detect always immediately the access point because it should send signals of tag.

It is trivial to force a wireless client to reveal the SSID. Thus, any hacker will be able to learn the SSID almost immediately after it has detected the presence of your router.

In addition, to disable the SSID broadcast causes known problems of connection/reconnection with several wireless devices.

In addition, broadcast disable SSID drains the batteries in your wireless devices as they have to actively seek a connection to your SSID to know whether here or now.

As long as your wireless device is not connected to a wireless network, it will be continues to try to connect to your SSID at regular intervals. For example, if you have your iPhone set up to connect to your home network and you pull out your iPhone permanently tries to connect to your SSID, transmitting the requests of the association on a regular basis, actually bloating on your "hidden SSID' to anyone.

As transmitting something takes a lot more power then passively scanning and tuned radio waves, it drains the battery. If you need good battery life with your ever wireless devices connect them to a network with SSID broadcast disabled, or make sure that the device does not automatically connect to it!

Never disable the SSID broadcast, especially not for security reasons, because they do not offer any added safety or an advantage.

    2. the MAC address filtering does nothing more. MAC addresses are always in the unencrypted part of wireless packet. Any attacker will immediately learn the MAC addresses of your wireless devices. It is absolutely useless in the means of security and cause problems as the best for you. Do not bother about the filtering of MAC addresses. It does not prevent attacks on your network as it is easily circumvented.

Use WPA2 with AES and a password strong. That's all that is necessary to protect your wireless network.

The rest is a joke for any aggressor and bothers you much more than the alleged assailant. If an attacker was able to decipher your network WPA2/AES the SSID of your network and MAC addresses are a free byproduct you will get during the cracking process...

Recently, I've disabled the security on the router to resolve the problem of Wi - Fi with Tablet.  Now, once I activated the security on the router as my mobile devices cannot connect.  Get response 'off network, bad connection '.  Very high intensity of the signal, link speed 54Mbps, WEP security.

If I disable security, mobile devices will be connected successfully.

  • WRT54GS - broadcasting of two SID

My WRT54GS seems to emit two SIDS wireless

One is called linksys - and is open without any security. I guess that's a default setting?

The other is one I set with security WEP and MAC filtering.

How to I get rid of the value by default "linksys" sid and don't allow access to the SID defined with security?

    Thanks in advance

Thanks, just loaded iStumbler and Yes ADR mac for the sid that I configured is as expected. The linksys SID has a different macaddr so it must be a neighbor who has an open wireless router.

    Thank you!!!
