How to open a file on former support with the extension .wmv on my iMac?

To my knowledge you can't, not without having to buy something like Flip4Mac, that allows you to play .wmv files.  As this is a Windows Media file, you cannot open it on a Mac without help, and help usually costs $$$.

  • View thumbnail folder displays an icon instead of photo for extention flv (VLC media file). until yesterday, it was working fine.

miniature display of folder files no picture would present flv and avi extensions.  MWV (windows media file) is ok.  VLC files were ok until yesterday.  I reinstalled VLC media player - earlier version too.  I also uninstalled IE 8 automatic update - KB976749 - window update put back. Ofcause, I changed many times display options (list, thumbnail,...).  I can read files with ok VLC, just that I can't see the image.

  • Compressed files into Windows Media files & does not of course

All of a sudden my e-books and digital scrapbooking files, which have been compressed, transformed into a different type of file - unfortunately I don't know what, and I couldn't open them!  I don't know how they got that way.  I must have done something without meaning to!  Then I changed to try to open w/Windows Media which, of course, does not work either.  A single file has been highlighted; not all of my e-book.  Then I downloaded a new file digital scrapping, and it's a Windows Media file - like all my setting discarded digital who have not decompressed.  That's happened?  What should open with?  I had no problem to ANY of them before this happened.

Try a system restore to a Date before the problem began:

    Restore point:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/HOWTO/Windows-Vista/using-Windows-Vista-system-restore/

Do Safe Mode system restore, if it is impossible to do in Normal Mode.

Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.

Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...

Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.

Read the above for a very good graph shows how backward more than 5 days in the System Restore Points by checking the correct box.

You could try renaming the file, including the extension and then delete. Which can sometimes do the trick.
If not, what type of file is and what about size? And logged as administrator?

The max on most email providers is 10 MB. The only way that you could share this file would find a download site that allows to host this file. You can do a search for hosting sites and find one that goes on your needs. Once you download the file to the single copy of the site the link and give the person who you want to initially by email.

  • Explorer.exe keeps the name change, deletion etc. of media files.

I do not know in which category falls THIS problem...
Feel free to sort where it belongs to.

The next thing happen very often:

I can't rename a file or folder. It is not the permissions. It's allways explorer.exe locks the file. Logging and turn it on again solve the problem most of the time, so I can remove/rename the file Explorer. In cases where this does not work I opening of session and closing session again, open a cmd.exe shell and remove the file without problem.

The types of files are .wma, .wmv, .mp3, .avi .jpg etc. all types of typical media files + a few others.

If the source of the problem is continuation of behavior:
Vista explorer.exe opens the file for read the news there, like extif of information in files .jpg, like mp3-ID3-tag, etc etc.
Can we prevent the explorer.exe to open these files for playback and the verification of the information? Win XP, one way to solve it (partially) which was to unregister the shmedia.dll, in Vista, it seems to be "" wmploc. "." DLL", but I prefer first an email of confirmation.

It's even worse with .exe files, where allways Vista (and XP) open the file to check for the icon resource, so on slow network, this leads to serious problems.

    Questions are...
    1. How can it be prevented that Vista opens various types of multimedia files to check their content and hang in part to the fact that (rename/delete prevention)?
    2. can it be prevented that Vista opens all .exe files to search for an icon resource, especially on the VPN or ANY network connection? I do almost all my (via VPN) stuff filecopy in a shell because I know that explore crashes after a few seconds due to this behavior.

KB956592 is already installed, it helps a little, but only a little because it isn't the navigation folder that really does hang, it is the action of file - open (especially with the .exe).

Before ask you: I have already change one of the biggest disadvantages of vista (this .reg file should explain itself if easy to do in words) so he checks any way content of the media due to the "automatic file type detection", but it always opens these files when they're accidentally hovering over these files and so crashes on certain files or make the undeletable and unrenameable.

This kind of thing is confirmed by vista resource monitor and pious sysinternals (now wininternals) tools, I see that explorer.exe is the culprit.

Don't worry, I still prefer Vista on XP :), it's just that he needs (such as XP and ALL other OS, no exception of Linux here!) adjustments for ease of use.

    Set

reg file - against the boredom of the folder-

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [- HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU]
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU]
    "NodeSlots" = hex: 02
"MRUListEx" = hex: ff, ff, ff, ff
    "NodeSlot" = dword:0000000
    [- HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
    "BagMRU Size" = dword:00000800
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell]

Normally stored in Users\yourname\then in different folders.

You can search for each media type extension, and then copy the files found in the external media (you must make sure that display the file extensions for known file types is turned).
