Wuauclt.exe? Is this dangerous or harmless, or both?

I know that wuauclt.exe can be a harmless process or spyware, and I'm trying to figure out which mine is. It seems to take an excessive amount of memory so I'm concerned. I did a search to see where he is in my computer and had the following results:
WUACLT in folder C:\I386
WUACLT1 in folder C:\I386
WUACLT. EXE in the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder
wuaclt in the C:\Windows\System32 folder
wuaclt1 in the C:\Windows\System32 folder
wuaclt in the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\dd9ab5193501484cf5e6884fa1d22f9e folder
wuaclt1 in the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\dd9ab5193501484cf5e6884fa1d22f9e folder

In view of the very limited amount of information that you have posted, I have to answer No.

Generally, users will see WUAUCLT. EXE running in the Task Manager process tab shortly after (re) from their computers. Depending on your automatic update settings, server requests, time of day and time of the month, WUAUCLT. EXE can run for 20-30 minutes or more until verification complete updates is complete. ~ Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (that is to say, mail, security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ WARNING: MS MVPs represent or work for Microsoft

    Hello
I am running xp pro sp3 with MSE (v. 1.77.1038.0). I had CATrust AV until a few weeks ago. I'm on a domain network. We have not required WU to run all the time.

I have issues with wuauclt.exe slow down my computer. All of a sudden, I hear the beginning of the computer running through the process and everything slows down. (5 minutes to open an email of 5 KB)

I * think * my problem is that there are 2 versions of wuauclt.exe & c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll on my computer. They appear as wuauclt.exe and wuauclt1.exe.  wuauclt1.exe and c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll files are version 5.8.0.2469.

Running the MSE analysis does not turn to the top of any spyware. I tried just to remove the old version, but they appear immediately as if the registry grows this version instead.

After reviewing the record, I see that everything related to Microsoft.Update.AutoUpdate has two entrances:
    That is to say
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft.update.AutoUpdate
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft.update.AutoUpdate.1

Could this be the thing slow down my machine? If this is not the case, what would it be? If so how can I get rid of the duplicates offending (and shocking!)?
    Thank you
    Ian

I can assure you that Windows uses only the wuauclt.exe file now and it is quite normal to find a copy of wuauclt1.exe in %windows%\System32 <=this> .

It is quite normal to find wuauclt.exe in the Task Manager. Processes tab shortly after starting your computer and so he can be executed for 10 to 20 minutes later (especially if Microsoft Update [1] is your source of default update).

That being said, the current automatic updates of running in the background has not such a detrimental effect on performance (e.g., 5 minutes to open an email 5 KB) when it is executed, unless the computer is low on resources (low power).

See if the boot minimum technical troubleshooting help you nail that other background process could contribute to the slowdown.

  • Wuauclt.exe slow down my computer

Whenever the Windows Update automatic update Client runs, it significantly slows down my computer.  For this reason, I put automatic updates updated Fridays @ 03:00, so that I'm not on my computer and it should not cause me any hassle during the working day.  However, this is not the case.  It's a Tuesday afternoon and I have wuauclt.exe now works and has downloaded the updates and continues to ask me to install the updates.  It is difficult to run the programs I need for running the job with that.  I've closed several times by the Task Manager: processes tab and it will not be closed.

How to stop popping up and running ONLY at 03:00 on Friday?

Sorry for not responding earlier but I never received a notification of any more responses about this until today .

My preference would be to make manual updates on the site, so I won't warn me, warn me or come at all.

As Mike has already said, if your on a domain network, you must ask the Admin on how the system is updated.
If it isn't and you are the person who updates it, then you have to turn off the automatic updates service and set THE " disable automatic updates. I want to update my computer manually. "

When you are ready to update, and this includes to restart the system so that files that are used can be replaced, and then start the automatic updates service before either visiting web sites Windows or Microsoft Update.

  • Problem with wuauclt.exe

    Hello

I'm having a very aggravating problem.  About every 12 seconds a black box showing wuauclt.exe is running is displayed.  It appears that for a fraction of a second, just enough to have problems with typing.

I use Windows Vista (Service Pack 1) and this has happened since the installation of Windows (that is, since this morning). It is not malware or a virus (I scanned for both).  In addition, I can't upgrade to service pack 2. When you click on the file "Windows Update", I am greeted by an "empty window".  In other words, the window appears, but has no text.

Please tell me what to do so that my computer function normally.

    Thank you.

  • Wuauclt.exe circulates every day for about an hour!

I have spoken here on the forum of the Performance and maintenance. The problem I have is that the update process wuauclt.exe Windows runs almost 1 hour daily and my system relentlessly during this period and no page faults unresponsive until the end of the update. For example, here is a shot of my WindowsUpdate.log for yesterday:

I am running Windows XP Professional SP3 and I have Norton anti-virus installed. I suspect that updates triggered by Norton. I've tried to set automatic updates to run 1This just a week, but that did not work. The default on page 1 hour fest happens again.

Should I remove the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore directory, and restart?

Fact. Waiting now to see if it worked.

  • Wuauclt.exe memory and processor

I have a problem with wuauclt.exe.  It activates all 20 minutes and stalls completely all other activities on my computer, using 90-100% of my CPU.  I read that the solution is to disable automatic updates. I did it, I rebooted, and yet I still have this problem.  If I go to the Task Manager when wuauclt.exe running and I manually stop the process, my CPU usage immediately goes down immediately.  I don't want to remove wuauclt.exe constantly since I I want to use it as a time to get my updates.  Is there something I can do, and if not, how to remove wuauclt.exe?

It makes no sense because it's guessing on what might be things.

After that the last series of Microsoft monthly update (13/08/2010), some systems (but not all) seem to have this problem.    Would you say that your questions come or shortly after the 13/08/2010?

    Apparently, Microsoft issued a statement:

"We have got reports from multiple sources and believes that it is a matter of on-line service and we're investigating it as a priority of 1."

I can't wait for MS, this is my statement on how to deal with the problem at the moment (there is no error or guess):

The automatic update service seems to be involved in this issue.  Not all machines well experience the problem.  It may be more common
on systems that have installed the 512 MB of RAM or less, but it varies.  The amount of RAM your system installed?

When you restart your system, the auto update is supposed to run, looking for things to do and if he doesn't find anything to do, it should run
turns off in a "short time".  It is sometimes not turn off or take very long to figure things and continues to run
and a popular symptom is excess HDD activity, slow response time, and in the Task Manager, the wuauclt.exe process disappear like him
should be when automatic updates checking would normally not be complete.

As a test to see if it is involved in your question, you can temporarily disable the automatic updates service in XP, restart your
system and see how things look with disabled AU.  If things are better, you can leave it like that and not had any future problems and
Wait for the ideas and maybe a fix from Microsoft or you can change the way that automatic updates are managed and let the auto update
    Service running.

You can completely disable the service to THE as a test and then see how things work.  To do this, click Start, run and enter in the box:

    services.msc

Find automatic updates, right-click service, stop if it is running (it may take a little time to stop). In the properties.
Set the startup type to disabled, click OK, etc. to close the Services application, and then restart your system and see how things look now.
You can look in the Task Manager process tab and should NOT see wuauclt.exe process (it is disabled).

If the system works very well with disabled AU, you can continue to read for my workaround or if the system still has problems, you may have another problem.

There are two types of updates, you can get from the Microsoft web site (they enter manually or automatically):

    Windows updates
    Microsoft updates

The solution that I use is to configure your automatic updates to leave the active Windows automatic updates and simply disable the
automatic Microsoft Updates.  You'll just have to manually check the Microsoft updates until the issue is better
    resolution.

If you disable the Microsoft updates, you will not get updates for MS Office, Windows Live, or Silverlight when you turn on the
Microsoft is updating again (later) but which can be acceptable to you.  This is the temporary consequences:

What are the differences between Windows updates and automatic updates from Microsoft Updates?  Microsoft says this:

"While Windows Update provides updates specifically for Windows, Microsoft Update expands the service to download
and install the updates for other Microsoft software, such as Microsoft Office and Windows Live [as well as Silverlight & Microsoft
Security Essentials]. Automatic update is a feature that allows you to configure your PC to download and install automatically
updates with each service, making it easy and convenient for you to keep your current Windows PC. »

You will always get the updates of Windows coming out the second Tuesday of each month automatically (Microsoft calls this Patch "")
Tuesday") and sometimes you can get Windows updates more before the next update Tuesday, but until MS he figures and fix it
You must remember to check for any Microsoft Updates yourself by hand (you are going to disable this part for now).

To disable the Microsoft updates, you must use Internet Explorer, click on tools, Windows Update and on the left side of the
Update of the page, click on change settings.

Scroll to the bottom of the page, and then click the box that says:

Disable the Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only

Click on apply changes now and replied in the affirmative (Yes) in the message box.

Restart your system and you should see the wuauclt.exe process appears in Task Manager, as he always does a restart and if
your system needs no update, wuauclt.exe process should go away - in a few minutes depending on your system.

This should be it.  You can restart once or twice and see the process in the Task Manager tab as soon as your system is able
and you can watch to see if the wuauclt.exe process disappear once he catches up and moved.  This may take several minutes
    but it should disappear eventually.

If you want to re - light the Microsoft Updates some time later to see if there are updates, using Internet Explorer, click
Tools, Windows Update and update page, click the Green «Go' located to the right of the message «get Microsoft Update»
Today! "Who will turn on Microsoft Update and you will have the problem wuauclt.exe again the next time you reboot
(unless it's fixed at that time here).

You can turn your Microsoft Updates whenever you want and look for updates or if you remember after the next update
Tuesday, you can turn your Microsoft Updates and look for Microsoft Updates then and get all updates necessary.  You
    are in control.

When you have done with all of your updates, disable the service of automatic update again and restarted, or disable just the Microsoft
New update and reboot when finished.

Maybe Microsoft will soon have this figured out, but that's what I'm doing at the moment.

  • Wuauclt.exe pigs all time processor which makes the computer unusable

The machine is a laptop Dell Vostro 1000 with Win XP SP3 Home edition. It has 2 GB of RAM with a 120 GB hard drive that is half full. The computer initially had no protection against the virus, then McAfee and Norton now. The problem exists all along.

For the past two years after start-up, the hard disk will work continuously for 30-40 minutes. Meanwhile, the computer is unresponsive and almost unusable. Meanwhile, the wuauclt.exe program uses 10 to 20% of the time processor, 100% of the time of HDD and 200 to 300 MB of memory. I did a lot of research on this issue. It is clear that this is caused by the logic messed up in one of the programs of updates windows several years ago. I looked at several positions of MVP and/or Microsoft employees, but none of them is no fix for the problem. They say all to come or try this. I tried all the tips I can find. None of them work with the exception of just disable the updates of Windows.

I contacted Microsoft by phone about it. They suggested that I do a repair of the original disc for Win XP. This does not work because the Win XP disk is earlier than SP3. He won't do anything.

All I have to do is find a way to remove all Windows Update of the computer software, so it can relocate. I found links to FixIt program on the Microsoft Web site, which is supposed to do, but when I run it, it stops and says something in the sense of "this software will not work with the operating system on your computer".

It's really discouraging that Microsoft caused this problem and then did nothing to remedy.

Have you ever done a repair facility or even a clean installation of Windows XP?

  • wuauclt.exe error message

At startup I get the following "wuauclt.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close", it happens again and again, at least 15 times and then goes.

I checked the Task Manager and updates 'auto' is not listed. I can't check the MSFT site to review recent updates because I get the message that the site is not accessible.

I did the Windows disk check registry exams and nothing helped. What should I do next?

    Hello

    ·         Since when are you facing this problem?

    ·         What are the hardware changes, did you?

Wuauclt.exe is a Windows Automatic Update Client first. Wuauclt.exe rest reside in the background and checks the Microsoft Web site for updates to the operating system.

Originally, wuauclt.exe is a legitimate system process, which is located in C:\Windows\System32, but there are cases where wuauclt.exe is actually a disguised virus, Trojan or worm.

Step 1: If you find wuauclt.exe stored anywhere different from its original location, you get really suspect and scan your system for possible threats.

Search for the file and see if you have this in several locations.

If you find, run a scan of Malware on your computer. Find a good program and run the Malware scan on your computer.

You can do a virus scan online by clicking on the linkhttp://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm and clicking on the analysis of a complete Service and accept the agreement.

Step 2: Removal remove the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore directory has resolved many users having similar problem.

  • Wuauclt.exe continually displays message to crash every few seconds

Windows XP Compaq, repeatedly gives the message that wuauclt.exe has experienced a problem and must close. I close it and it comes back in a few seconds. I stop the process, and it starts after a few seconds. I delete the file in the Windows\System32 folder, and it reappears after a few seconds. I searched on the PC and it is the only example of wuauclt.exe.

What can be done to repair this PC?

    Hi WKB1380,

    1. What is the full error message that you receive?

Wuauclt.exe is Windows Update AutoUpdate Client. It is a background process that verifies with the Microsoft Web site for updates to the operating system. It appears on the list of the Task Manager process when waiting for a response, as if to confirm permission to download an update.

You will receive this error message if there are updates available on the computer that you do not install.

I suggest that you check if a windows update is available for the computer and verify also there are updates failed and post back with the details.

    (a) click Start, click all programs, and then click Windows Update or Microsoft Update.

    (b) on the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site, click view update history. A window opens that displays the updates that have been installed or that have failed to install on the computer.

    (c) in the column State of this window, find the update failed to install, and then click the red X.

If there are no failures of updates or updates available on the computer, then I suggest that you put the computer in a clean boot state and check if you receive the error message.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

See the link below to learn more about how to clean boot.

Reset the computer to start as usual

When you are finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

  • Wuauclt.exe can be scheduled?

I have xpsp3. For the last two weeks, I was plagued with periodic stops nearby. The only thing I can see running in the Task Manager is wuauclt.exe. Sometimes this occurs at inappropriate times. It usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, once or twice a day, and my machine is virtually unusable during this period. Controls when he directs wuauclt.exe? Is it possible to predict when it will run, so that it does not work at critical times? Thank you.

My computer has 504 MB of RAM.

Well, it's better than my cheap old WinXP laptop (384 MB) but still fairly weak power, all things considered.

Actually, your best option (for now) will be found in this post of mine in a related & recent thread:

Once you "flip" by default to Windows Update, you should see significant improvements (and Microsoft Security Essentials will always auto-updated itself).

But you have TO remember to 'flip' to Microsoft Update or shortly after Patch each month on Tuesday so that the automatic updates offer updates for Office, Silverlight, Windows Live Essentials or updates of theprogram (no definitions) to MSE.

    Whaddya think of that?

PS: Yes, Microsoft is aware of the problem, believe me!

I have Windows Vista on a Dell laptop. How can I stop this? What is the problem? Buying a registry cleaner will fix this problem? Should what registry cleaner I buy?

    Hi Sheryl30,

Thank you for using the Microsoft answers Forum.

Since when are you facing this problem?

What are the hardware changes, did you?

Wuauclt.exe is a Windows Automatic Update Client first.

Wuauclt.exe rest reside in the background and checks the Microsoft Web site for updates to the operating system.

Originally, wuauclt.exe is a legitimate system process, which is located in C:\Windows\System32, but there are cases where wuauclt.exe is actually a disguised virus, Trojan or worm.

If you find wuauclt.exe stored anywhere different from its original location, you should get really suspect and scan your system for possible threats.

Search for the file and see if you have this in several locations.

If you find, run a scan of Malware on your computer. Find a good program and run the scan of Malware on your computer

You can also set your computer to the State of clean boot that you get this error randomly. This will help you determine if the services running in the background are the cause of the problem.

Here's how you set your computer to clean the boot:

    a. log in the computer using an account with administrator rights.

Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the start search box and press ENTER to start the System Configuration utility.

    b. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password or click on continue.

    c. under the general tab, click Selective startup, and then clear the check box load startup items. (The check box use the file Boot is not available.)

    d. on the Services tab, click to select the skin all the Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

    e. click OK and then click on restart.

Here is a link to the article that will show you how to troubleshoot using the clean boot:
