Continually get a message popup 'wuauclt.exe '.

window of the 16-bit MS-DOS subsystem

C:\Windows\system32\wuauclt.exe
NTVDM CPU has encountered an invalid statement.
CS:1217 IP:0179 OP: 63 72 69 70 74 choose "close" to terminate the application.

This message keeps popping up every 5 seconds. I click close and it pops up again. I can't click the "Ignore" button that it just keeps reappearing. Cannot close the window either. Have you tried the Task Manager to kill the process. The task manager not to see.

I have Windows Vista on a Dell laptop. How can I stop this? What is the problem? Buying a registry cleaner will fix this problem? Should what registry cleaner I buy?

Thank you very much!
Sheryl

Hi Sheryl30,

Thank you for using the Microsoft answers Forum.

Since when are you facing this problem?

What are the hardware changes, did you?

Wuauclt.exe is a Windows Automatic Update Client first.

Wuauclt.exe rest reside in the background and checks the Microsoft Web site for updates to the operating system.

Originally, wuauclt.exe is a legitimate system process, which is located in C:\Windows\System32, but there are cases where wuauclt.exe is actually a disguised virus, Trojan or worm.

If you find wuauclt.exe stored anywhere different from its original location, you should get really suspect and scan your system for possible threats.

Search for the file and see if you have this in several locations.

If you find, run a scan of Malware on your computer. Find a good program and run the scan of Malware on your computer

You can also set your computer to the State of clean boot that you get this error randomly. This will help you determine if the services running in the background are the cause of the problem.

Here's how you set your computer to clean the boot:

a. log in the computer using an account with administrator rights.

Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the start search box and press ENTER to start the System Configuration utility.

b. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password or click on continue.

c. under the general tab, click Selective startup, and then clear the check box load startup items. (The check box use the file Boot is not available.)

d. on the Services tab, click to select the skin all the Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

e. click OK and then click on restart.

Here is a link to the article that will show you how to troubleshoot using the clean boot:

http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

|
You can also try to run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe).  To do this, follow these steps:

1. open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click programs, accessories principally made, right-click Guest, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on allow.

2. type the following command and press ENTER:

sfc/scannow

The sfc/scannow command. analyzes all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with appropriate Microsoft versions.
|
However, you can also check out the link below for more information about the System File Checker.

http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/936212

If the steps above don't help, run a virus scan. See the link below:

I hope this helps you, good luck.

Kind regards

Why don't you send the error message that is accurate and complete to see you?

Here is a folk remedy for this situation if this is what you see (or similar looking) of svchost.exe:

Application error: the instruction at "0x7c91b21a" referenced memory at "0x00000010". Memory could not be "written".

It seems that the last update for Windows Media Player may contribute to this problem when the system has the Windows Driver Foundation Service active and running.

Unless you write your own drivers for XP and using the Windows Driver Foundation Service to help you debug, you should disable the WDF Service.

Click Start, run and enter in the box:

    services.msc

Click OK to launch the Services Applet

Locate the Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework Service, right-click right the Service, select properties and choose disabled and OK your way out of the Services Applet to save the changes.

Note that you will not be able to 'Stop' Service first, but it's OK.

Restart your system (the WDF service is now disabled) and check your failure condition now.

    Hello

    • When you receive this error message?
    • What were the changes made before the problem occurred?

    Method 1:
I suggest you to disconnect from all the outdoor devicec except keyboard and mouse and check.

    Method 2:
I recommend you perform the clean boot.

Configuration of your system in a clean boot state helps determine if third-party applications or startup items are causing the problem. If so, you need to maybe contact the manufacturer of the program for updates or uninstall and reinstall the program.

I run windows XP SP3. When the message appears that I have to cancel the activity and then the system will stop. It happens all the time, but most of the time that it does.

Hello, this may be a problem possibly caused by malicious software on your pc. Please go to firefox > addons > extensions and remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, the things that you have not installed intentionally, I don't know what purpose they serve, etc.). also, go to Control Panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software (led, search protect,...) from there and run a full scan of your system with software security you have in place and various other tools such as the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner.

  • Wuauclt.exe continually displays message to crash every few seconds

Windows XP Compaq, repeatedly gives the message that wuauclt.exe has experienced a problem and must close. I close it and it comes back in a few seconds. I stop the process, and it starts after a few seconds. I delete the file in the Windows\System32 folder, and it reappears after a few seconds. I searched on the PC and it is the only example of wuauclt.exe.

What can be done to repair this PC?

    Hi WKB1380,

    1. What is the full error message that you receive?

Wuauclt.exe is Windows Update AutoUpdate Client. It is a background process that verifies with the Microsoft Web site for updates to the operating system. It appears on the list of the Task Manager process when waiting for a response, as if to confirm permission to download an update.

You will receive this error message if there are updates available on the computer that you do not install.

I suggest that you check if a windows update is available for the computer and verify also there are updates failed and post back with the details.

    (a) click Start, click all programs, and then click Windows Update or Microsoft Update.

    (b) on the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site, click view update history. A window opens that displays the updates that have been installed or that have failed to install on the computer.

    (c) in the column State of this window, find the update failed to install, and then click the red X.

If there are no failures of updates or updates available on the computer, then I suggest that you put the computer in a clean boot state and check if you receive the error message.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

See the link below to learn more about how to clean boot.

Reset the computer to start as usual

When you are finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

    (a) click Start, type msconfig in the search box and press ENTER.

    (b) If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password or click on continue.

    (c) under the general tab, click the Normal startup option, and then click OK.

    (d) when you are prompted to restart the computer, click on restart.

    I hope this helps!
