XPS 2720 - replace SSD of 32 GB to 500 GB SSD to use as a boot drive

I bought a new mSATA 500 GB SSD with the intention of replacing the current 32 GB SSD, but instead of using it for caching as is currently the case, I wish it were my boot drive. I got from crucial and they provided a license for acronis help to mgirating my data.

But when I tried to replace it, and I changed RAID AHCI in the BIOS, the system could not start (inaccessible Boot device). Even with the 32 GB SSD, it will not start if the AHCI value. It only works when the RAID option. I would have thought that my 1 TB HARD drive was the boot drive and so this should allow the system start just by allowing me to access the SSD within Windows where I could transfer a disk image and put the SSD as a boot device.

Y at - it a guide step by step that will allow me to do so without having to start over from a clean install. I'm running Windows 10 and prefer not to start Windows 8 and upgrade again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Fergoc,

There is a simple solution to change AHCI RAID, as described here. Let me know if that helps!

I need your help guys... I've been everywhere on the net, try different methods to clone my Windows 7 for SSD and failed repeatedly.

Here is my setup, I have a HP Envy 14 with a 500 GB HARD drive. I bought an SSD to speed things up.  I have 2 OS (dual boot),

Win7 and win 8, on which Win8 is the default operating system (according to the news of easyBCD).   I just want to clone the Win7 OS part.

    (Win7 - C drive), (Win8 - F drive) and recovery on the D drive.

I tried these t hings upafter the defragmentation and backup)

    Hello wawipack,

Welcome to the HP Forums! I hope you enjoy your experience!

I understand that you're having trouble to locate the boot device. I'll do what I can to help you! To start, make sure that you have tried all the steps in this document from HP: Solve Boot Device Error Message not

If this does not help, I suggest to do a reinstall of HP standard on the SSD. Once done, do a restore to a previous image in the OS Windows, is not using any bootable media.

These steps should help get back you on track. Please provide your results. Thanks for choosing the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • cache on xps 8500 mSATA ssd drive

I had to reinstall windows on an XPS 8500 8.  2 TB disk and disk 32 GB mSATA SSD hidden.  Installed Intel SRT but no option to speed up the drive.  How can I be sure that the SSD is used as a cache drive?

  • Z210 CMT: The boot drive SSD - considerations?

I am setting up a new (refurb) Z210. I want to replace the boot with an SSD drive. I have all of the HP recovery discs.

In reading some of the posts here, I think the most important factor seems to be not to install an SSD is a more SMALLER than the current hard drive Seagate SATA, which is a unit of 250GB.

It seems that most Z210 SSD install uses an Intel 320 or 520 series-drive.

Are there other things I need to know about installing an SSD as a boot drive for Win7/64-bit on this machine?

    Suggestions for specific drive?

I have a pair of 15K cheetahs connected to an LS SAS3041E for storage, so I would only use the SSD for the OS and programs not RAID.

Hi Phil, I also have an Z210 where I installed an SSD of 520 Intel as boot drive which works a treat...

It takes a minimum of 128 GB, if you want to use the HP system recovery discs, see here.

You can always use HP recovery disks and restore a bigger HARD drive, then reduce the volume and make them a backup on an external disk system, then restore your backup to a smaller SSD 120 GB and then finally to increase the volume of the size of the SSD as I here.

Probably the biggest problem for some people is the SSD tool reports on issues related to the AHCI not selected and not to achieve the performance expected, which there are question here and here.

The Intel SSD 520 is a great player, but the 120 GB version is not as fast as the larger versions in this series. The Samsung 840 Pro versions are also designed to be very good, but I liked the longer warranty Intel

A lot of things to read, but these referenced threads should cover most of the bases.

    See you soon.

  • XPS 8500 - replacement HDD and SSD

I'm looking to upgrade of storage on my my Dell XPS 8500... My question here is twofold:

    1. I want to replace my current 2 TB HDD (disk storage) with a 4 TB or 5 TB of HARD drive. I will be able to use and see the full 4-5 to? Or is this a case where I will not be able to use the entire disk or will need to score? Y at - it an update of the BIOS that will allow me full access to training?
    2. I am also looking to replace my mSATA 256GB SSD (boot drive) with a 500 GB mSATA SSD... will it be any problem read this disk after installation (plan to do a clean install of Windows and reload my programs)?

Thanks for your help. Hoping to update soon, but did not buy until I knew what I was getting myself into.

Its a fairly recent machine with a UEFI BIOS, so it should be good... If you have already upgraded to Windows 10 then your system is already a unit of 10 windows and you should be able to clean the Windows 10 installation on the new SSD. If you haven't you should upgrade now as free upgrade expires tomorrow. #

You must use the SATA AHCI operation. I assume you have your system already set up this way as you already have a 256 GB mSATA.

  • Activation of Cache SSD 32 GB on XPS 2720

I just got a Dell XPS 2720 of decision-making and it rocks so hard, except that I can't get the job of SSD cache and it is so annoying because I paid extra for it.

    So far:

    • I got the computer and clean installed 8.1 with RAID mode in BIOS.
    • Installed all the drivers and updates etc.
    • Open Intel Rapid Storage to enable Smart Response, but the acceleration tab is missing. Performance shows only a power management option.

I tried to use diskpart to clean the SSD, initialize it in the MBR, GUID, creating a RAW partition, etc. and a ton of combinations of things in disk management, but I can't get TSRI give me this option of accelerating.

Does anyone have some luck with this?

Everyone seems to have a different story how to push the cover SSD RST at work, so here's mine:

After a disk crash I had to reinstall Windows 8 and update to Windows 8.1. For some reason, I'm done with a recovery at the beginning and at the end of the disk partition. It seems that the option to accelerate the RST does not appear if the last partition is not the operating system.

After I deleted the partition recovery with the diskpart utility (select the disc, select the partition, delete partition override) and the partition of the BONE at the end of the disc, the acceleration tab appeared and Smart Response works! If the error was not the mSATA SSD, but the structure of the partition on the disk to the operating system.

So I guess that, if the OS partition is not the last partition on the disk, the Smart Response option will not be displayed. Intel should really document this better.

  • XPS 2720 - how to replace 32 GB SDD with the largest

    Hello

I want to replace the current 32 GB SDD with a 256GB SDD. I don't know how many records the 2720 XPS can hold and what kind.

-Can it accommodate a new SDS plus the drive HARD and SDS that are already there?  Alternatively, if I need to replace the current SDS? If Yes, should it be mSata or the computer can hold the two SATAs?  I'm looking at the Samsung 840 Pro 256.

Ideally: HD 2 TB, 256 GB, 32 GB SDD SDS

Good: 2 TB, 256 GB SDD

Bad: Can't hold an another SATA

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi Racarius,

Dell XPS 2720 can be configured with 32 GB, 64 GB or 256 GB mSATA car and 3.5-inch SATA 3.0 HDD capacity of 1 to 4 to.

You can purchase the 256 GB mSATA drive to replace the 32 GB mSATA drive.

  • Dell XPS 8700 replace / add mSATA SSD

I have a new Dell xps 8700 and I put in an mSata 500 GB SSD, planned on getting 2 TB hard drive and simply run the pc of the ssd. My problem is the operating system. I have the recovery disk and the disk from Dell drivers. the pc came with Windows 8.1, I upgraded to 8.1 Pro with Media Player. I don't think that the Dell disk will do a clean install of OS 8.1, and I'm not sure to recover the operating system and disk set, since I upgraded to 8.1 PRO. I don't really have a problem with just the Windows 8.1, and then do the upgrade again. I think maybe even the simplest would be to try Windows 10 on it, I ran beta Windows on other computers. My Question is that I have upgraded to Windows Pro 8.1, I'll be able to get the full version if I try to recover / and with the correct product key. or do I use the recovery disk, and then try to make the OS drive / and collect the key?

If you create recovery discs using Dell software, it will install windows 8.1 as if you bought the computer fresh from the factory with all the software that Dell gave you etc.  You then upgrade to windows 8.1 pro via the same method as you have done before, however if they gave you a product key, you should be able to just pop that in and make the upgrade.  You could make an image of your HARD drive, then run everything on the SSD by cloning the drive for the SSD.

Certainly the GPU fan.  Some people fan MXM existing oil and cut a hole in the rear case and add BIG 90 MM fan.

  • DELL XPS 2720

    Hello DELL community!

I have a question about the all new XPS 27 PC AIO Haswell. There is the option (as the old model 2710) to set up the XPS specification with a 32 GB cache mSATA SSD and a 2 TB for storage HARD drive.

Is it possible to spend the mSATA SSD in an mSATA 256Go example and use it as system drive disk / boot for Windows? So can I turn off the RST in the Bios (from RAID on AHCI) and freshly install Windows? I'd not taken in charge of software preinstalled, I want just a much faster PC. I mean there are mSATA 450GB SSD on the market and it would be a shame, if this interface is reserved for caching? Who needs that at a time where the SSDS get cheaper.

Thank you very much in advance

    See you soon

My HARD drive is starting to become a little slow and I want to move to an SSD. I borrowed an empty SSD with a friend to test the speed, but it does not appear in the BIOS. It is a standard Samsung SSD that should work. Is there a problem with my computer or it's compatibility with the SSDbrand or the type problems?

I am also looking in the upgrade from 8 GB to 16 GB of ram, can someone connect 1 stick of 8 GB of RAM that is compatible with my computer without having to replace the current 8 GB key.

  • ADD/REPLACE SSD ON HP ENVY 15-j059nr

    Hello

I have a HP ENVY 15-j059nr Quad Edition Notebook PC

I want to upgrade the hard drive because I do a lot of video editing.

with the 15-j059nr as I bought it I have a 750 GB drive at 5200 rpm and small 24 GB SSD for acceleration

I want to replace either the 5200 disk 750 GB pm or 24 GB msata with an SSD or a msata SSD ssd

If I remove the msata 24 GB ssd that is installed now what will happen? I understand it is used for acceleration and it also has the image of windows 8 on it for recovery purposes. Preferably, I would like to leave the 750 GB drive in place and put a 250 GB SSD msata in place of the stock 24 GB that came with my laptop.

    What do you recommend?

    Thank you

    Here is the Service Manual:

    Manual

Page 44 shows how to access the drive of the WSSD. It is not too difficult. However, replace it with a bigger WSSD and using this drive as boot drive are a bit complex. In wholesale, if a regular reader is installed the system starts the mssd. You will need to load a bootstrapper on the main drive, pointing to the WSSD drive where the operating system.

Now the MSSD and the primary drive are set up in a sort of RAID array where the WSSD holds files frequently consulted for quick access. In fact, she does not have the recovery partition; It is on the main drive. Usually this works quite well for faster boot times and lance program and gives the "feel" of a faster system. For you, doing video editing, it is not ideal at all. You access videos from the slow drive 5400 RPM and the WSSD help at all since you only go once image files, and they are too big to pass on the WSSD. You'd still have this problem of access slow disk as long as you try to work on large video files that are found on the disk 5400 RPM for the WSSD boot drive is also not an ideal solution.

Your best solution is a full size 2.5-inch SSD. You can remove the MSSD completely and just replace the disk of concert by the glaciers slow 5400 RPM 750 with more great one SSD as the budget allows. Post back if you need any help to find one or any other form of assistance.

  • Replace SSD hard drive on laptop HP 650?

    Hello

I read here that some HP laptops BIOS will only recognize certain approved components, such as wlan etc. cards

What I would do is replace the hard drive on my laptop HP 650 - C5C49EA with a Plextor SSD and would like to know if there is a BIOS (or other) limitations that would prevent this.

I read the interview and the Guide Service for this model, and have made similar exchanges before, I am confident in my ability to lead the real exchange.

    Thank you!

    Hello:

Normally, this restriction applies only to network WLAN and WWAN cards.

I have never heard of anyone having a problem of rejection of the BIOS on a PC built in the last 3 years on the installation of an SSD.  Some old PC recognize an SSD as a hard drive, but the BIOS would not have rejected it with a device unsupported error code.

Your PC should have no problem to launch a SSD instead of the mechanical hard drive.
