XPS 8700: Issue of drive configuration

On my 8700 XPS running Windows 7, I intend to use an external drive connected to one of the SATA motherboard ports eSATA occasionally, but the external hard drive is not permanently attached and running.  Which of these wirings of disk configuration is not OK:

Scenario one:

  • SATA 0: hard drive
  • SATA 1: eSATA, but normally no drive connected.  Sometimes an external drive would be attached. (this should be enabled/disabled in the BIOS every time?).
  • SATA 2: optical drive

Scenario 2:

  • SATA 0: hard drive
  • SATA 1: optical drive
  • SATA 2: eSATA, but normally no drive connected.  Sometimes an external drive would be attached. (this should be to be enabled/disabled in the BIOS everytime?).

Thank you!

Hi Lone Star,

It should make no difference. However, you can assign a drive letter on the external drive, so it does not change other drive letter assignments when you connect the eSATA drive.

  • XPS 8700 2nd hard drive Bay access

I want to install an SSD in my Dell XPS 8700 system. Once I opened the side panel, I noticed there was a Bay that said second hard drive. Exactly how you can access this Bay? You cannot mount the drive, sliding to the rear, because the power supply works in the way. Then of course, she must cross the front. You physically remove the front panel of the computer? I hate doing this, because something always breaks i.e. clips, some son gets snatch etc. I guess I could remove the power temporarily.

In the BIOS, I can see that, under SATA 3, there is a 3 TB drive. But, when it comes to Windows 8, OS does not recognize it. In this regard, any help is appreciated.

For Windows to recognize the second hard drive, it must be partitioned, formatted, and received a letter from reader, using Windows Disk Manager.

    Small question:

Is it possible for me to add another internal hard drive of my computer XPS 8700? If so, other than the new HDD, is there other additional parts that I need to buy?

    Thank you.

You should be able to, you may need to buy an additional SATA III (6.0 GB/s) cable to connect the drive (if the drive you buy is not equipped with a cable. Also, until you buy make sure that you have a SATA port on your motherboard.

Yes, it should work provide your Intel RST is the latest version. And with GPT, you can keep one big partition. Worst case, a car cheap controller will allow any player to work.

Also, I have the same problem with the Application of Dell (Version 1.4.2000.0, A07) update to the XPS 8700.  The installation fails and if I manually extract the contents of the package, only the two files above are displayed.

I would be grateful if someone could help me solve this problem.

  • Adding a DVD - RW drive for a XPS 8700.

I just bought an XPS 8700 provided with Windows 7 (my choice) and one disc of 12 x DVD - RW. This machine replaces a decade old Dimension 8400.  I want to add a second DVD disc to avoid the shuffle of disk by making copies.

The last time I did was when they were still using old PATA drives where the drive data cable was the old ribbon cable and you used a splitter to the power cable.

I have never installed a SATA drive so I have a few questions.  When I order my second drive, what wires I need to complete the installation - or is all the wiring already in the computer?

One last question is the format used in the 8700 XPS and how to remove the coup de grace in the drive Bay?

Thanks for any advice - Tom

    TomHF

You need to buy a DVD/RW SATA drive 5.25 "similar on the drive shown here:

    http://www.Newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16827106289

A data SATA 18 "cable is necessary, there should be a spare cable/power connector SATA inside of the case for a second optical drive.

One end of the SATA data cable is connected to the optical drive and the other to a SATA connector located on the motherboard [page 13].

Two 6-32 X 1/4 screws are necessary to install the drive in the Bay.

The installation procedures of the player can be found here:

You can use the same instructions as given for the hard disk, on page 42.

    * Monitor Dell model?  Dell 2 S2240M 21.5 "

    * What specific model of computer, desktop/laptop?  Desktop Dell 8700, special edition
    * What operating system? 8.1 Windows 64-bit
    * Which video card? AMD Radeon HD R9 270 2 GB of GDDR5 memory
    * Which ports are available for the video card? looks like two dvi ports, but they are slightly different in the search
    * Which video output from the video card port video on the port monitor do you use?  Currently I use the top port dvi + dvi-> vga converter to connect a monitor.  It works well
    * What cable are you using to set the video card to the monitor?  That's what I'm trying to understand, what s that I should buy.
    * You use the Dell supplied cable?  I plan to buy one in the store

I went to Fry and bought two cables DVI - D to DVI - D single link.  Given that the video card has two DVI connectors, I just connected a cable to each connector and the other end to the monitors and voila, it worked.

  • XPS 8700 Hard Drive failure - after less than TWO WEEKS

I'm a little frustrated.  I recently ordered a new Dell and XPS 8700 office.  Everything seems to work well.  Then yesterday I walked away from my office for 5 minutes, and when I came back, I got a screen saying my computer could no longer starts.  After spending some time on the phone, we confirmed what I already suspected, that my hard drive has failed.  This was after less than two weeks!  Is this a common problem with the recent Dells?  I am certainly not happy having to wait several days understood of the technology that will be (according to the support person) that I spoke) an appointment to install a new hard drive.  I'm more frustrated that I'll lose data, installed applications and settings that I have spent the last two weeks on.  I assumed that if I had to look on the bright side of things, it wasn't months or years of work that was lost, but I fear that the replacement of the HDD will suffer the same fate on the road, making me lose a lot more work.  Besides than to spend the money to set up a backup system, how to avoid this problem in the future?  And what is the level of reliability of hard disks installed in the 8700 s XPS?

Dell uses a variety of brands of hard drive of their computer. HGST, WD, Seagate and Toshiba are trademarks used. Your next hard drive could be one of those, there is a chance it will be different than what you have now. As with all hard drives, they will be eventually. some quickly, other overtime. I wouldn't worry about replacement drive failure. If so, check and see if it was the same as the previous disc.

  • DELL XPS 8700 optical drives

I just bought XPS 8700 it States two optical drives.

One is the DVD player, but what is it for.

When you shoot the low coverage it is metal with holes of

The case can accommodate two 5 1/4 optical drives, but it looks like yours (like most) has an optical drive.

GoTo Device Manager and you will see what it is.

  • XPS 8700 (another issue of SSD)

I'm sure this has been covered, and I searched for this answer but has not had the success I was hoping so sorry for the repetition.

    I have a XPS 8700 (i7, GT-720, 8 GB, 1 TB) on the way.

The plan is to turn it on and check that everything works and then replace the HARD drive with a 500 GB Samsung 850EVO.

I've read many sources the merit/demerit to use the migration of Samsung software to "clone" a HDD to the SSD.

Right now I'm leaning strongly in favor of the 'clone '.

Thought I would ask here where most of the owners of XPS hang out on the new installation of vs migration to an SSD.

Before trying anything to make sure that you create a Rescue Disk (external hard drive Bootable) or the backup of the plant (Bootable USB Flash Drive) with the latest version of Dell backup and restore.

I give an example on how to do it with Dell backup and restore 1.7.5.64 here:

    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/Dell-backup-and-recovery/

However, a newer version on 1.8.1.70 out there. Get this by installing 1.7.5.64 and selecting the "?" at the top right and then look for the updates. I do not have a direct download link to the latest version.

1.7.5.64 has a lot of bugs and improvements over previous versions. The latest version 1.8.1.70 has essentially a UI improved on 1.7.5.64.

This will give you a way to return to the factory settings software cloning goes wrong (especially with SecureBoot/UEFI).

If you want to use Dell-installed on the SDS and using the HARD drive as a data drive backup and restore, see the steps detailed here:

  • Dell XPS 8700 - secondary SATA Hard Drives don't appear not

I tried to install two additional hard drives on my new XPS 8700. The machine came with the primary drive connected to the SATA 0 and the DVD drive connected to the SATA 1. When I installed two additional hard drives, I put in the SATA 2 & 3 ports. Hard drives appeared in Windows (8.1), nor in the BIOS. I played a bit with ports SATA 2 & 4 and 3 & 4. Hard drives are not recognized. When I looked in disk management, they weren't there. As a last resort, I unplugged the DVD player SATA cable and plugged the cable on one of the secondary hard drives (which was then attached to the SATA 1 port) to connect the DVD player to the SATA 2 this drive cable port. When I started my computer, all drives have become visible. I don't know why. SATA cables I used comes from a 5 year old computer (like hard drives). Was it a problem with the cables, or is it a problem of SATA port? The first disc hard school should go in port SATA 1?

I searched the forum and couldn't find a similar problem (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19520798.aspx). Eventually, the person back to his computer.

    alexsyseng,

for the most part, you are right. I had this same problem as well, but I already had the a06 bios. the problem is with the uefi bios feature. its ment to be safer, but causes problems when adding disks. I tried your suggestion to change the secure boot options, but it does not work for me. I found the solution by chance when I went from uefi boot inherited so that I could use my cd discpart of secure erase my ssd.

so here's the solution, whenever you add a drive, you will pass the bios in legacy mode, then return to the uefi mode. If your computer came with windows 8 then more than likely your bios is set to uefi. When you switch the bios the legacy of your desire to computer error and you say that he has not found any what boot drives. No worries, switch to that return to uefi, reboot and now your system will start properly and all your disks will be visible in the windows and disk management. no need to replace your motherboard. Unfortunately, I spent two hours with tech support and they didn't know that either.
