XPS 8700 - which partitions can I remove?

* Please see my image in attachment my disk management *.

I just manually installed Win 8.1 on my XPS 8700. I installed the operating system for an SSD, and in the Windows menu, I reformatted my hard drive 2 TB to store my programs on.

(1) in the disk management screen, I noticed there is a lot of data recovery/OEM partitions - what I am able to remove? Do I need them or they are simple for recovery situations only? I'm a bit wary of removing OEM partition and EFI partition as I do not know if it will mess with my PC!

(2) also whenever I start my PC, now it says I have 2 selections to begin:

Volume 2 = SSD (which I want to start automatically)
Volume 7 = a few menus recovery / on one of the partitions, but I can't say that

I've never seen this before selection when I had Win8.1 installed on the hard disk. Wouldn't be better to simply keep the partitions and select volume2 as my disk to MBR in Windows so I ignore the msg to start every time?

If you want to save your factory settings, you should do so, using Dell Backup and Recovery by using the Windows installation on your original drive:

http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/Dell-backup-and-recovery/

i.e. remove the SSD and the original hard drive boot and then make a rescue disk (external hard drive Bootable) / Backup factory (USB Bootable).

None of the 5 scores are needed for a data reader and I advise to dry the internal HARD disk (with removed SSDS and UEFI/SecureBoot disabled) using the likes of DBAN:

http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/securely-wipe-your-hard-drive-with-dariks-boot-and-Nuke-DBAN/

You can then use these to restore the factory settings on the SSD later if you wish. Install in UEFI with activated SecureBoot.

http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/Dell-backup-and-recovery/#restore

If you prefer to install manually clean then see here still install in UEFI with SecureBoot enabled:

http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-Microsoft-Windows-and-Office/Download-Microsoft-Windows/download-Windows-8-1-retail-and-OEM-ISO/

After installation it will also help you configure Windows to use the HARD disk as a data disk:

    Thank you very much
    Paulo

First (1.4 GB) partition is created automatically by Windows 7 and there are some files used by Win 7 in case you need fix the system or set system time back at the beginning.
The second partition C is common system partition containing the Win 7 OS.
The last partition is the recovery partition that contains the files to recover.
Recovery files are required to create a recovery disk. In addition the recovery partition allows to recover the laptop without the use of the recovery disk (HARD disk recovery option)

I do not recommend to remove or change any partition UNTIL you not create the recovery disk.
Create the recovery disk and then you could change the partitions of HARD drive theoretically you can delete the last partition of HARD drive recovery if you have already created the recovery disc.

  • Satellite 2HW C855: win 8-10GB recovery partition can be removed?

For my Satellite C855-2HW with Win 8 OEM, I would like to a partition to separate data in addition to the OS + programs.
At present 4 scores are already in use.
First 450MO partition recovery, the second a third EFI 260 MB, of the score of 920 GB operating system partition, and the fourth a 10 GB recovery partition.

Now that I've done of recovery with "Toshiba Media Recovery Creator" DVDs, I can remove the recovery partition right?
Can you only do this for an external support as with Diskpart or Gparted?

It takes to this partition for media files; Photos, documents, music, movies, etc.

What is the best way of all this?
    Cheers, boris.

    > Now that I did with 'Toshiba Media Recovery Creator' recovery DVDs, I can remove the recovery partition right?

Yes. After changing the structure of the partitions probably you won't be able to use the HARD drive recovery facility more. This was the case in the past. In any case, now you have recovery DVD and you can install the recovery using these DVD image.

  • DELL XPS RECOVERY D: partition - can I rename it to B: without affecting "Recovery"?

I recently bought a XPS420 which came with a 500 GB hard drive. He had 3 partitions.

The first partition has no name and it is used for EISA. The 2nd partition is named D: and it is used for "Recovery." 3rd partition is C: where is Vista OS. There is no floppy drive. The CD / drive has label E:

I made a new partition and had to assign F: for her.

Thus, the installation program looks like this:

    No partition name. D: (recovery) | C: Vista | F: new partition. and e: for cd/dvd-rom

I want to install XP in F:, but as can be expected, I'm having a hard time to do it. One of the problems seems that readers are not in good condition.

If I could rename D: to B:, I have this neat configuration:

    No name | B: recovery | C: Vista | D: new partition for XP | CD/DVD drive E:

I feared that, given that D: is for recovery, if I changed it to B: label, the recovery feature may not work.

Could anyone knowledeable please advise me if I could change the D: to B: and not be confronted with problems of recovery.

    Thank you very much.

  • XP to Win 7 set at level OK. A 80 GB with 20 GB C and D Partitions 60 GB drive. Which Partition is active? Can remove Win subdir on another Partition?

I have a Dell 745 with XP to Win 7 installed OK. The 80 GB hard drive has a partition C of 20 GB and 60 GB D partitions. The two partitions have a Windows subdirectory. If D is the active partition, can I remove the Windows subdirectory on the partitiion C? How can I find out which partition is active?

Personally I start from scratch by booting from the cd win7 to install, early in the process when it locates the partitions, delete them both, and then continue the installation to utalise all the space

  • GeForce GTX 970/980 on XPS 8700

Hello, I have XPS 8700, which came with OEM GTX 745. I think it passes to the Geforce GTX 970 or 980. These word on 8700 XPS video cards?

I am particularly concerned, because system recommended for 970 power is 500 W to nVidia's specifications, total power of XPS8700 is 460 w. Has anyone installed GTX 970 or 980 on 8700 XPS?

    Hey Ryocchin,

The GTX970 or the GTX980 will work in terms of being able to connect through PCI-express port.  Where you might encounter a problem is with the physical size of the map.  I know that some 970 models can be 12 inches, I guess the 980 years can grow according to the solutions of cooling for these exotic cards.

The other piece of the puzzle is to replace the power supply.  A 460W pourrait be authorized as a basis of suppliers GPU their system requirements on the assumptions made about the power draw of the entire system & always shoot a bit on the high side.  But if your computer is a few years old is probably not turn off 460 watts.  So I recommend a new power supply.  EVGA, Corsair, XFXm and Antec have all been good for me over the years.  If you want to simulate a modular PSU that you'll save tangles of cables.

So those are the two big things to look for: physical space for the graphics card (although I'm sure that a XPS8700 will hold a 970 without problem a lot) and a new power supply.

The Dell service manual is here if you want to get an idea of what it looks like to replace components:
    http://downloads.Dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_xps_desktop/XPS-8700_owner%27s%20manual_en-us.PDF

I hope this helps!  Let us know what other questions you might have.

No, the XPS 420 computer supports DDR2 RAM, the 8700 XPS supports only DDR3 memory.

  • How can I remove a symbol of the partition

If I placed a symbol in a note on the score, for example a symbol staccato or legato, how can I remove it much later, once the cancellation is no longer a realistic option?

I tried selecting the symbol staccato in the box part and then using the gum, and which erases the note instead.

I also tried the functions > note attributes > reset all attributes and which deletes also all sharps to flats and apartments to sharp objects I did.

Just to clarify, I need to make an entire partition, so it would be tedious to have to restore all the alterations to reset manually.

  • Satellite A660-k17: can I remove the two primary partitions used for restoration?

    Hello
    I have 3 questions :) #.

    1. I burned a copy dvd recovery media, on a laptop A660 k17. There are two partitions on the disk that I think are there for the recovery. The first is 1.46 GB and it's for the recovery and another partition hidden 8.29 GB... and I think that the first contains the Recovery Wizard and the whole environment in which we will get through the repair of the system and the hidden disk contains the actuall with windows data, drivers and so on. Can I remove these two? I ask mainly on the first, if it is not necessary for the system to boot or something after that I have to recover the laptop to the factory setting.

2 and I also want to leave my partitions so that I don't have to partition the whole drive from C 600 GB again. I have a D drive created but there is this response to a topic already in the forum http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=64754&tstart=90
who says that when I leave the partitions I created myself, that the recovery will be not available. I have a copy on dvd, but only to make sure no kidding something upward.

    3. when I want a clean system without some software which are preloaded on the oem recovery disk... I have to use windows recovery? or it will be the same as the toshiba one?
Thanks for the reply possible :)
    Beautiful day :)

    > Can I remove the two primary partitions used for restoration?
First not, but you can remove the Toshiba recovery partition if you created the recovery DVDs. One day, if you want to install the recovery image once again you can use created the recovery disc.

This morning when I turned on one of my computers to work, there is a tab that I can't remove. I compared this settings on the computer to a different computer and they appear identical. The empty space is driving me crazy.

Hello, apparently this option has been removed intentionally in preparation for a redesign of the browser which will land in firefox later this year. You can use the following extensions to work around this issue if: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/hide-tab-bar-with-one-tab/

How can I remove specific MacBookPro (s) and PC which have been taken by a thief (s) numere?

I don't see an option in iTunes to reauthorize a MacBookPro (s) and PC numere specific.

It has an option to reauthorize all but, when I click on it it gives the following message:

    Failed to remove permission

You can only Deauthorize all computers once a year. You must wait until 24 February 2016 before you can remove all your computers again. If you encounter problems computers, please contact Support Apple customer visiting http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/

I suspect that this may be a security risk in iTunes, Apple/iTunes is not allowing customers to withdraw the authorisation of systems that have been stolen by thieves.

Unless you are able to connect to remote computers, there is no way to do. If you wish, click here and ask the staff of the iTunes Store to perform a second remove all.

  • How can I remove the recovery partition from a corrupt HARD drive that I replaced in a laptop?

I replaced a HDD corrupted in the laptop of a friend and you want to reuse. How can I delete the recovery partition? When I try to use my Windows 7 computer management tool, it will not access? I did a complete player wipe (twice) what the partition is still there and I can't remove it. It's 14 GB of space I want to retrieve and use the HARD drive in another system at a later date.

    Thank you

    Try the command line option:

Start cmd.exe as an administrator, then inside the window cmd, type

    DiskPart

    then, type diskpart

    list disk

take note of the correct disc ID to clear

    type

    Select disk x

(where x is the ID of your disk to erase)

    type

    clean

your HARD drive will be erased completely

or you can try the magic of partition:

    http://www.partitionwizard.com/

or if it does not work:

    http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

Hiren's boot cd and gparted tool available.

You must create a bootable CD or USB pen as media.

  • How can I know which files fragmented, I can safely remove?

    original title: fragmentation of files

How can I know which files fragmented, I can safely remove? Some of my fragmented files are system files.

Fragmented files are not bad! At worst, need another millisecond or two for the system read this file.  If the file is rarely or never accessed, so there no performance impact at all.  When you delete files from your machine, fragmentation does not fall within the decision-making process. If you don't remove them if they are not fragmented, then you should not remove them, period.  If you mind really that a file is fragmented after you run a standard defragmentation, there are programs out there as freeware "Contig" that defragment almost anything.
