Your printer can print in black only, but up to a certain point , you need tri-cartouche color otherwise it will not print. It's a little late now, otherwise if you only need to print B & W, a monochrome laser printer is very good and much cheaper to run (in terms of cost per page).

I see that you have questions about the desire 5530 e - all - in - one printer. I can answer those for you.

(1) the 5530 envy has a system of two cartridges so it will print with a black cartridge in the printer.

(2) 61 and 61XL cartridges are both HP cartridges. The printer must be able to print with the same quality that you were using a regular cartridge or a cartridge XL.

For a permanent change to any setting of the driver for all your print jobs, you can go to your printer driver, mine is here (Win 7):

Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and printers

Once you go there, right-click on your printer, select Printing Preferences > click the Advanced button > choose printing in grayscale setting required. You can make other settings there as well.

These settings should stay with all the print jobs you send to the printer.

I have a Photosmart e 7510 and am trying to print photos. I have installed HP Premium paper and HP Photo cartridge installed. When I print the photos that are green - I printed both a progress report and a report of print quality and the cartridge photo is full but the magenta is empty. It seems to me that the photos are print with regular color cartridges and not the photo cartridge. Or photos using all the cartridges? I correctly on all the printer settings and chose to 'better' than the quality of the photo.

The photo cartridge is just black photo, which is used to improve the nuances of black and colors in a photo. When photos are printed colours would be used to create the best possible performance. If you open the movie in QuickTime Player, go to the section you want, you can change/copy to the Clipboard and open preview and then file/new Clipboard and the image appears in a new document ready for printing. It can also be pasted into Photoshop or any other program that can print.
