I have this error message and called technical support from microsoft, we have tried to reinstall Vista again once I had tried three times with the same error message. It would freeze to "complete installation." even let him all night to see if he needed more time to complete on its own, but nothing helps...the technician told me I have a hardware problem, but when I installed XP on it everything works correctly.
It's a new pc and a clean install of Home premium. I re-post this question since yesterday

So was the question then? You can run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor to see if there are compatibility issues that you have with hardware or software that would prevent an upgrade to Windows Vista.

During an upgrade to Windows 7, I get the following error message. Windows installation encountered an unexpected error - error Code: 0 x 0.
Searching the Web I found the recommendations of setting DMA on optical drive (only), updated the bios (done), archiving (DVD media provided Toshiba Windows 7 upgrade disc) everything seems OK visually and by disabling antivirus (turned off AVG resident shield). I still get the same error.
Help would be appreciated.

Using the F8 method:
1. reboot your computer.
2. when the computer starts, you will see your computer hardware are listed. When you see this information begins to tap theF8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Boot Options Advanced Windows Vista.
3. Select theSafe Mode option with the arrow keys.
4. pressenter on your keyboard to start mode without failure of Vista.
5. when Windows starts, you will be at a typical logon screen. Connect to your computer and Vista goes into safe mode.
6 do whatever tasks you need and when you are done, reboot to return to normal mode.

I have a portable Gateway that will not start, but rather when I turn on the laptop, it gives me a box of caption read "the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error." Windows Setup cannot continue. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and restart the installation. I bought the recovery CD gateway and even made the recovery discs offered by Microsoft, but nothing helped. Or recovery CD were no help. I am running Windows Vista. Any suggestions?

If you have problems with the gateway recovery process, you will need to contact Gateway
It's their recovery process not microsofts
You may have a hardware problem

I am running VISTA Home Premium on Pentium IV PC, and I was able to run the program MicrosoftFixit before with no problems (probably BEFORE I installed the Service Pack 2 update).An older version detailed advice how to solve this problem would greatly appreciated...!

Download the Microsoft fix it and then try to run and check if it works. I suggest you perform the clean boot on the computer and check if Fixit works.How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista and Windows 7

While trying to reinstall Windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 of the reinstall DVD after you have installed a hard drive again, I got this message: error message "the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error" after starting the system on Windows 7 Recovery. Tried F10, SHIFT F10 and nothing happened. Then I tried a suggestion of virtual Agent to press F8 to get to advance Boot Options, but this option does not appear! Help!
For Dell cptrs, you will need to press F12 to access the unique Boot Order Menu(= a temporary setting), little after the Dell logo appears on the desktop. U hv only 5 seconds to do, b4 the cptr will automatically initialize to top with the internal HARD disk.
....... F12 is usually used to start the cptr since the DVD player or a plugged in USB-flash drive with a Win 7 install or recovery media.
To permanently change the boot order, you must similarly press F2 to access the full Boot configuration Menu. The default boot device is the internal HARD drive, but this can be changed to DVD player, USB, disk, network drive, etc. F2 is usually used to start the cptr of an external hard drive(= USB HDD) that contains a bootable Linux operating system.
