  The problem is a software that was created for Windows 95, 98, and Windows XP has no way to work correctly with an operating system that didn't even exist when the software was written. However, the error message you get normally means that you have a 32-bit software that you are trying to install on a 64-bit system.

  To find out if your computer is running 32-bit Windows or 64-bit, follow these steps:
  System opened by clicking on the button start , by clicking on the Control Panel, click System.
  Under system, you can view the system type. This will describe if you have 32-bit or 64-bit.

  You can also try compatibility mode.

  If the program is not compatible, then you try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

  I recommend doing a clean uninstall/install.  You can make a copy of files * .xml-neo found in \ColdFusion10\cfusion\lib somewhere first.  Most of the configuration settings that you set in the CF administrator in these .xml files.  After you install the 64-bit version, make a clean backup of .xml files somewhere safe, then copy those you entered your installation of 32-bit.  In this way, if ColdFusion restart no problem, you're good to go.  If this isn't the case, you have to restore .xml files backups from.

  Thank you for your quick and comprehensive response. I see from your answer that it is possible to 'upgrade' to Windows 8 64 bits from an installed version of 32-bit simply start from the 64-bit DVD and by taking the necessary precautions to copy data and files in advance.

  Thanks especially for the guide step by step designed to make a "custom installation". It is the exact procedure, I was looking to have confirmed. I couldn't do this job yesterday, but it may have been because, inadvertently, I activated the "system reset" function of the 32-bit Windows 8 on the hard disk when you are looking for the option to open a "custom installation".

  I will try that tonight and get back to you (and any other Googling their way here) a confirmation if it works or not as I found it difficult to find detailed information on this procedure elsewhere.

  First of all the email you received refers to Microsoft. Microsoft is a company not a product. The email informs you to upgrade from Microsoft, and not a particular product, e.g., Windows, Windows Live, Outlook etc. Alarm bells start ringing right on the first sentence.
