0x8024400a error code, impossible to install service pack 3

Original title: Toshiba laptop under XP Home Edition with service pack 2.  When I try to update and install SP3, it will fail with a 0x8024400a error code.  I tried to reset update download "Fix it."

Laptop is 6 years old, XP Home Edition (2005) came loaded with it.  Wipe the hard drive and use the reinstallation disk accompanying Toshiba made me a Trojan horse.  I'm trying to update everything but IE does not level (from 6) without service pack 3 and I can't spend 3 I get an error message above code.  I downloaded 'fix it' as suggested without help.  It seems you are trying to restore all my programs and such keep being blocked, I assume because of the age of the disc re - install.  I backed up my C set to a hard drive external drive before I wiped of it, but I don't know what to do next.

  • Code 800F0816 when installing Service pack 1 in Windows Vista

I had an 0146 error code, I replaced the hard drive and installed Vista from a DVD of resettlement. So far, all of the updates has loaded fine. When it comes time to download and install service pack 1, it ok until the end it says that is is unable to load the update and I get and error message stating the Code 800F0816. What should I try to get this pack to load?

I went on the link. What happens is the Welcome to Windows screen. A little lower I can 'get it now' [Microsoft] Security Essentials...

Microsoft Security Essentials is available only when the WGA scan does not detect the presence of a valid, fully functional antivirus application.  Yet another symptom of an existing infection (ongoing).

Your 'copy' of the VAS is installed illegally & will NOT work correctly.

Do a clean install. After completing the clean install this time (in order):

    1. uninstall the Trend Micro application (which will also be reinstalled, but now invalid) & restart.

2 download/install Microsoft Security Essentials (free), instead of customer Service: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/default.aspx

    3. launch repeated manual checks for Windows Updates & install updates they are offered (follow all prompts) until you finally got SP2 & all post-SP2 installed updates.

Do NOTHING else online (e.g., navigation electronic control cat; download/installation of other stuff) until you have completed step 3 above.

Also do NOT connect the computer to local networks (i.e. other computers) or restore all backed up data.

If you need additional assistance with the clean install, please start a new thread in this forum: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-system

    Notes:

=> You will not be able go to Win7 unless & until Vista SP1 is installed.

-Online a manufacturer OEM version of Windows is permanently tied to the computer on which it is preinstalled. You may not use the OEM Win7 disc to upgrade Vista to Win7 computer or do a clean install of Win7.

Good luck! More & outta here...

I tried to install sp2 once and got the error code "UNABLE to INSTALL" 0x8e5e03fa. I have loaded the "Fixit" program, run the program, and he says that he solved the problems, no problems that I have seen.  I tried to reinstall sp2 and got the same results. I down loaded the only settlement sp2 version. Now on a side note for the past week, I have not been able to print any pdf files, saved on hard drive, or via a browser, IE8 or Mozilla. Try the points following and post back with the results and the information requested by PA Bear.

Boot from your PC and let in a minimum of State boot when you run the following tools.

    Disk error checking

    System File Checker

    The system update tool

Then download the SP2 and run your office installation.
