2 new MBP - best installation order?  Running a virtual machine in a training camp?

I have the arrival of two new MBP.  I had some pretty mixed feelings about VMWare fusion - I used it for 3 years now on my MBP de Santa Rosa.  I ended up kind of give up on this and have been broadcast on Win 7 in Bootcamp for the last year.

Last week I tried to open Bootcamp Win7 molten - he worked thereafter, but I ended up getting a Windows 7 not genuine message.  I have authorized successfully, so the next time I have bootcamp I had to re - authorize again.  I know that this does not - as I have had to work a bit then only a few years - but it seemed to me that it was important to the order of installation.

I want to have Win 7 will work perfectly via Bootcamp and Fusion.  I have a brand new MBP - and an ISO of Windows 7 Ultimate (with license company/serial number).  I intend to buy an another two licenses of Fusion (I suppose I'll have everyone - even if the old notebook is abandoned (is on v2), so it would be nice to be able to transfer it to my new.)  I did not need to transfer the software or settings of the old laptop - I'm happy to have a fresh (and own) start...

It would be easier to install merge, then install Windows 7 with a fixed (pre-allocated?) size (I expect 400 GB).   I can then transform this VM of the merger in a bootcamp partition?

I would like to avoid burning a disc - and I think that if I do a bootcamp, first of all, should be a disc.  If I need to do, can anyone recommend an ISO burning tool?  It seems to be good at making coasters while I tried before...

Install Windows 7 via Bootcamp first, then use the tool on the homepage of the library Virtual Machine to make a Boot Camp virtual machine. Going virtual physical is not as easy to p2v. Of course, the best option is to go down v2 and get the latest version (3.1 as of this post).

Regarding burning, disk utility should be fine.  The open, press Burn, choose image Win7 you have and then pop in a blank disc DVD-R or DVD - RW and you will be fixed.

I have a SBS 2011 VMS under ESXi 5.  The material is not enough and performance are slowed down.  I want to spend the SBS 2011 VMS to new hardware.  After install ESXi on the new hardware, which is the best way to move the virtual machine.  It's big enough, and it is a production server - I'm looking for fast and efficient.  What are the most common problems when moving from a virtual computer to new hardware?  Thank you!

A virtual machine is encapsulated in a set of files, making it easy to carry; You can copy the files from the virtual machine using WinSCP or any other program to the destination host. Register the vmx on the new host and turn on the virtual machine. You may also look @ of Veeam FastSCP for this purpose. I have not had the chance to use it yet, but it's free and seems very popular with the community:

  • Definition of reserves on the running JAVA Virtual machines

I recently came across an overview of VMware performance that had a page essentially recommending reservations memory setting for the running Java virtual machines (see table). We have Java environments and did not have performance problems or complaints so, I doubt that I would implement any changes. However, I am curious to know if it's even a better practical recommendation, I could not put the date on the document so I wanted to see if someone had updated or current information for vSphere 4.X, 5.X environments.

In General, we only use reservations memory to avoid the overhead administrative and operational increased. If we have never not a necessity, I prefer to use reservations to pool resources rather than granular level VM reservations.

In my opinion, if you use the reservations are a regularity no exception in your environment, then you can use these rules.  That said, if you don't have no problem, I wouldn't change anything.  I've also linked a new document below.

  • What is the best way to backup of virtual machines on a standalone ESX with the data store local

    Hello

I want to save the virtual machines on a host ESX autonomous. and all of these virtual machines is the local data store.  What is the best way to save these virtual machines in this situation?

And probably we don't provision VTL on the local data center, so it is possible to use VCB to backup? And VCB is a good choice compared to the traditional method that installs the backup client in each virtual machine?   Because I think that in this situation with the data store local, it cannot not reduced the load on ESX hosts and network overhead can be avoided.

    Thank you!

    LAN

    > 1. VCB usable remote tape library? I mean it's not local library and uses the tape library to another network data center.

VCB is completely unrelated to the tape library, it is a framework, not a backup solution. If your standard backup software can work with the remote tape library you can try it to ungrateful with VCB.

    > 2. what the difference bwteen hot - added NBD and modes if there is that an ESX host with store data local and want to use a virtual machine like VCB proxy? I think that they are the same: the VCB proxy read data through the I/O of the ESX host stack in this situation.

NBD works on network and the backup traffic goes through the service console connection. Hot add uses special machine for assistance to connect vmdk to and uses of e/s disk stack instead of e/s network.

    No, it isn't.

  • Run a virtual machine or vAppliance on a VMPlayer installed on a virtual machine

    Hello

I had to install VMPlayer 2.5.2 build-156735 on a virtual machine in the Back/restore solution. I was initially not able to install theVMplayer on a virtual machine, but I got the time this as a result of article

    http://communities.VMware.com/thread/61041

Now, after the successful installation, I'm not able to run a virtual machine on this VMPlayer, I get an error message

"You can't power on a virtual machine with in a virtual machine.

I tried to run a test applainc called My NMAP.

I will attach the vmware.log file and the vmx file.

I don't know there must be something in the vmx file to work around this problem.

VM host is a Windows 2003 VM with sufficient resources.

Any ideas how to get around this problem?

    Ah.

    ESX 3.0. * does not support monitor_control.restrict_backdoor.

    ESX 3.5. * does not support monitor_control.vt32.

ESX 4.0. * takes in charge monitor_control.restrict_backdoor, but instead of monitor_control.vt32, you must use "monitor.virtual_exec = material."

On ESX 3.*, you should still be able to execute the nested virtual machine by adding the following configuration option to the configuration file for the internal VM:

    vmx.allowNested = TRUE

As far as I know, that you can no longer start the vmx86 kernel driver once the HyperV role is activated.
In previous HyperV versions that you could use a special startup parameter to disable the HyperV role for the next boot - so that you can run Workstation - but I don't know if it still works.

So to summarize: HyperV and workstation cannot co-exist and be used one after the other - at the very least a reboot is required

  • How can I transfer a file from the operating system to a backup of the production running VM virtual machine?

Problem:  After I do a backup one using ghettoVCB on a local VMFS volume, I have a virtual machine that I can start something happened to that running.  However, sometimes I just need a file from the OS level, which means that I would need to start to get them, but then I have an IP address conflict.  I can't imagine a way to have the NICs turned off and still be able to move the file.  If I change the IP addresses, the software that I need to create the file that I need to transfer no longer works because, although there no need of constant connectivity to the seller, it is locked to the public IP address.http://communities.vmware.com/images/emoticons/sad.gif

Material:  I have two 4 ESXi hosts to work, each with local VMFS volumes.  They share a private vlan common and a vlan common public.  They each ssh, ftp, wput, wget, and rsync available.  I have a Windows 2003 Server VM which also hosts a NFS and the VI client and other VMWare tools.  It also has private and public interfaces as do virtual machines that would be to make and receive the OS files.

Question:  How can I transfer a file from the operating system to a backup of the production running VM virtual machine?

    Thank you!

Yes Mr President, make sure you set the network on this virtual machine to be connected to the 'Internal' vswitch, you set up before turning the power on to the virtual machine.

  • Servers running on virtual machines licenses?

    Hi all

I have a question on the implementation of license on VMware ESX 3.5 VMs servers.  Some applications have licenses FLEXLM is fixed on the MAC address of physical servers or USB dongle on the server.

If I intend to move these physical servers to virtual how changes in regimes licenses for these applications?

Previous experiences on the same will certainly help. Thank you.

    Concerning

    Sirot

Yes, we run license servers in virtual machines.  For license servers that are associated with the MAC address, you can statically configure the MAC to a virtual computer, but the license server will need to be updated with the new MAC address.  For license servers that use a USB dongle, USB Anywhere of Digi is the best route and we are currently using this solution.

  • Run a virtual machine with a graphical interface on a host without GUI

    Hallo

I want to install a simple Windows 7 for some tasks bit where I need Windows on my server Ubuntu 14.04. This server has no GUI (no X) and should have any.

Already, I've installed the virtual Windows machine on my workstation to 12, so I would just copy the vmdk on my linux server and run it, maybe put something in the vmx file.

But I do not know is that it's all means possible.

    Is it?

Is there any player or any application for ubuntu VMware when there is no X system (on ubuntu), where I can run virtual machines with GUI inside?

Maybe another virtualization tool, vmware not?

I think that this exact question already somewhere, but I haven't found much question where comments lacking a GUI, but not the host.

I need a guest-gui on a host without gui (where I have only the terminal).

So maybe it's not possible at all, so please tell me a 'no', so I won't expect more

    Thank you to

EDIT: oh, this seems to be another question unanswered it is too difficult or too stupid?

    Hi Frank,.

Now that would be stupid, having a text Installer, and then not allow the virtual machine to run. I think it should work, but you must pass the nogui option.

    Vmrun help:

Nogui option suppresses the user interface,

    [gui | nogui]

refer to the manual of vmrun: VIX API Documentation

Edit: hmm... Now, I see that you have already tried the nogui option. You might be able to install the package libxinerama, but he could hang out in a lot of dependencies.

FWIW, vSphere is pretty much what you describe a system not GUI to run GUI invited, so it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Unfortunately, I don't have a host linux without X installed handy here, so can't test here without the implementation of a server without head myself.

You can also try to run the client via the command vmware:

  • Running same virtual machine in the Lion and the snow leopard cause problems?

I just loaded a new hard drive with Mac OS X Lion to run some programs that run only on Lion.  My Mac serves mainly through Snow Leopard installed on the main hard drive.  I can boot to an OS or the other.  Two questions:

    (1) can I have my a copy of VMware Fusion 4.1.1 installed on the disk of Lion and leopard snow by car?  Of course, I can only use one at a time since I can start only upward in an OS.

    (2) if I do the above and open my Windows XP VM on Lion, are all changes to the virtual machine that would make it unusable under Snow Leopard (or vice versa)?

Make sure that your VM is off - not suspended--before the host.
Then it should work without problem

  • New video drivers for Vista or XP virtual machines with WS 7.1?

    Hello

My apologies if this information is somewhere obvious, but I looked through the forums and help and do not see it...

When I've upgraded to VMware Workstation 7.1 my Windows 7 VM obtained tools from VMware updated and therefore a new video driver.  I have now improved characteristics, for example, OpenGL 2.0, in the Windows 7 VM.

I noticed that my XP and Vista VMs do not seem to detect an upgrade of VMware tools with Workstation 7.1 and OpenGL for example is 1.1.

Is this normal, or what I need to do more to uninstall VMware tools for these older systems?

    Thank you!

  • Using vmrun to obtain an IP address when you run the virtual machine mode headless fails customers

Operating system: OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

VMware Fusion: Professional Version 8.1.1 (3771013)

When you run a VM guest in headless mode I can't use vmrun to get IP clients. If I eventually bring to the top/start the merger GUI, the command returns the IP address as planned. It is always reproducible.

I tested with open-vm-tools and tools VMware packaged with the merger and the behavior is the same. I also spoke with others on the channel of freenode #vmware who have confirmed that the problem exists for users of workstation as well.

    Hi danandham,

Welcome in the vmware community. Iyou s really a problem, we try to fix it.

After a command, you can use as a workaround:

  • Run the virtual machine on the SSD or external HARD drive

    Hi all

For school I need a large number of virtual machines. In total, I have about 140 GB of VM. And with a total of 250 GB of SSD on my macbook pro, which is for many.

If I want to move my VM on an external hard drive.

My question is what is the best type of external hard drive that I can get.

It's a normal with a thunderbolt connection HARD drive or an external hard drive SSD with USB 3.0 connection.

Who is the fastest, and I see a lot of delay compared to my normal internal drive of the SSD.

I don't want a disc HARD normal 3.0, it may slow down the VM to a large part.

    Hello

If you ask a normal hard drive vs SSD then the SSD will win anytime, regardless of the USB3 or love at first sight.

An SSD using thunderbolt would be preferable, but I don't know if they are easy to find.

The advantage of having a via USB3 SSD, is that the disc is easy to use also other non-apple machines.

An SSD in USB3 should work fine however.

    Side note:

As you have an external connection there is a risk of the drive is disconnected/offline when you use the virtual machine. This can cause whatever it is the corruption of data to have a virtual machine that is completely missing. So if this is going to be your Setup program then make sure to make regular backups of these virtual machines to another disk.

  • Best way to migrate a virtual machine from local drive to Cluster?

    Hello

For historical reasons, we set up a virtual machine in the local disk of the ESX host.  This host is not connected to the San, where there is one group of another 3 ESX host.

We would like to remove this standalone ESX host and migrate the virtual computer to the Cluster.  Should what tools I use?  Can use us the converter to do?  If so, when we connect to the Infrastructure of VI, does connect to the version independent host ESX OR import this virtual machine to an ESX Hos in the cluster?

    Thank you

    Hello

your ESX host is connected to your vCenter?

If Yes just turn off the virtual machine right click in vSphere client and choose migrate. Select destination storage and ESX server and it will be migrated.

If it's not I turn off the virtual machine and just copy the whole directory of the VM on the new ESX Server with scp on ssh.
