5.1 ESXi update 1

VMware has just released update 1 of ESXi 5.1, dell will publish soon custom iso file?

Just realised made HP released...

Hello rickywk

I don't have an official ETA on the release of update 1. Based on previous versions, I think about a month after the release of VMware. For example, 5.0u2 was released by VMware 12 20, 2012, we published it 16/01/2013.

Thank you

  • 5.5 - ESXi Update 2 vs ESXi 5.5 Rollup 2 Driver

    stupid question Yes day.

So 5.5 ESXi update 2 is just the updates for Vmware and no driver updates, same base drivers who were in 5.5?

And 5.5 cumulative 2 driver is the Vmware updates + all new drivers that have been released since 5.5 was released?

The image of the cumulative hotfix driver includes additional drivers and is supported only for new installations, i.e. not upgrade the host. For details take a look at the Readme document that is available in the download section.

  • ESXi Update 2 work with vCenter 5.1 5.1 update 1?

We had some communication problems this past weekend, and our team Windows have not upgraded vCenter 5.1 update 1 to 2 of the update. While my team upgraded from some of our guests GA 5.1 ESXI Update 2 to fix some bugs. The hosts are still in maintenance mode.

We heard vCenter must always be a newer version than the hosts. Yet, the VMware compatibility matrix says may manage ESXi 5.1 5.1 vCenter update 1 update 2.

We use the DRS, HA and 1 FT vm. We distributed switch and switches Standard.

We will have problems? Which statement is accurate. vCenter must always be a newer version or the matrix?

    Hi Rutager,

You can manage the host with vCenter 5.1 U1 U2 5.1 ESXi no impact on Production or the DRS HA nothing. Please find the screenshot for your reference

This shows vCenter version 5.1 U1 can support up to 5.1 U2 ESXi host.

off experience only question we face is that the Update Manager will not be able to download patches beyond the U1 5.1 patches a few shots in accordance with baseline

Note: 5.1 U1 and U2 each thing will be same agent FDM. no change in architecture HA

  • Question on ESXi update

I'm learning to work with ESXi and the element now on my list is the ESXi update.  Since I'm under the version of the device of vCenter, it seems I will need to know how to update via cli.  In the vSphere client, it shows the Image ESXi profile - 5.1.0 - 20130402001-standard.  Because I am running with the version I downloaded VMware, I wasn't sure if I had to apply all the updates, I found. If I go with the 20130402001 as an indication of what version/patch level I fit, it would look like I just need to get the latest patches 3.

The next question is I do and then apply these in the order they were released or are they cumulative and I only need to apply the last published fix?

I'm scheduled to go to class 5.1 of ICM in a few weeks, just trying to get a solid base under my feet.

Thanks for being patient with a beginner,

    Ron

It's always a good idea to test things in a lab before their execution in production.

Take a look at for example http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2008939 for how to install the patch and if the 'install' or 'update' is the best option for your environment.

  • VSphere ESXi Update 1 to access the data on a USB key.

I have ESXi Update 1 installed and you want to access the data on a USB key.

    (1) someone could let me know if plug a USB memory stick directly the ESXi server hardware is supported in update 1?

    (2) and/or could someone let me know how I can access files on a sick memory that is attached to the computer on which I have installed client vSphere on (I'm then going to the VM to the server ESXi from this PC).

I want to just access the files (ona USB key) in the VMs (update information Lic) operating system. Is this possible?

You will not be able to do, vSphere does not allow access to USB devices.

You can try VMDirectPath with your USB PCI controllers, but anyway are still not supported.

  • ESXi UPdate 3

OK, here's my problem.  I have a PowerEdge SC440 running 1 GB of RAM (will be 4 GB in the future) with a Core 2 Duo.  My problem is when I try and install ESXi Update 3 from scratch, I get an error saying can't find the drive to install on.  However, when using ESXi Update 2.  It works perfectly.  What is the problem?

VMware has switched the driver used with ICH7 controllers so Update 3 a drive connected ICH7 is considered an IDE drive.  You can either used a custom oem.tgz to correct file that or this http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/ESXi_install_to_IDE_drive/ESXi_install_to_IDE_drive.php.

  • 5.5 ESXi update 2 | Hosts disconnect and reconnect to randomly

    We have 3 HP DL380 x G9 5.5 u2 running ESXi servers.

They have been in production for about 6-8 months until now without any problem whatsoever, until recently.

Recently, Vcentre guests will enter a 'disconnected' State and the alarm 'host and connectivity power '. After a few minutes, the host will reconnect and everything continues as usual. This disconnection causes no VMs sign out or restart. During the period where Vcentre shows as disconnected host, we can still SSH and ping on the ESX host without problem.

I checked through the VPXD logs and found that, at the time of the failure, in this case:

It doesn't seem to be a single host that is affected, it could be anything. It does not appear to occur at the same time during the day.

I have checked for problems known and found some handshake SSL timeout KB articles, but do not believe that the same thing is happening here. I tried increasing the time-out period by that article anyway (KB 2064246) but that does not make a difference.

All devices are connected to one HP5406ZL2 pass, with management on a vswitch with 2 x 10 GbE interfaces Active / active with route based on the origin of virtual Port ID set.

The server running vCentre is also the MRS server and our server backup exec.

Any information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

This weekend a just disappeared from the servers disconnected completely and don't come not back online.

There is the -force or f switch, see the documentation:

    https://pubs.VMware.com/vSphere-50/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.VMware.VCLI.ref.doc_50%2Fesxcli_software.html

The syntax should look like this:

$esxcli.software.vib.update (deposit of string [], boolean dryrun, Boolean force, Boolean maintenancemode, boolean noliveinstall, Boolean nosigcheck, string, string [] vibname, string [] viburl proxy)

    You did: $esxcli.software.vib.install("/vmfs/volumes/$uuid/update-from-esxi5.1-5.1_update03.zip",$false,$true,$true,$false,$false)

In terms of shell of ESXi this translates to force and ignore the requirement of maintenance mode, which are not recommended:

esxcli vib software install - /vmfs/volumes/$uuid/update-from-esxi5.1-5.1_update03.zip--force--mode maintenance depot

What you should do though is just to enter maintenance mode and run:

update of vib software esxcli - /vmfs/volumes/$uuid/update-from-esxi5.1-5.1_update03.zip deposit

So the PowerCLI command should look like this: (again once, remember to put the host in maintenance mode before that):

    $esxcli.software.vib.update("/vmfs/volumes/$uuid/update-from-esxi5.1-5.1_update03.zip",$false,$false,$false,$false,$false,$null,$null,$null)

By omitting all other parameters not specified may work too.

Note: flags or behavior could have evolved in esxcli between different versions. Compare versions of ESXi host where it works and where it is not and see what options, one esxcli update software vib expected. If this causes errors

VMware KB: Installation of patches on an ESXi host from the command-line 5.x

    1. Download the update and transfer it to any store of data that is available for the ESXi host
    2. Connect to the host via SSH ESXi
    3. Put the ESXi host in maintenance mode.

    # vim - cmd hostsvc/maintenance_mode_enter

    4. go to the directory on the data store where the patch file was transferred to and verify that the file exists:

    # cdvmfs/volumes/Datastore/DirectoryName
    # ls

Verify that you can see the file that you downloaded. I guess that the file you downloaded is in zip format. In this case,.

    5 # software esxcli vib install d ' "/vmfs/volumes/Datastore/DirectoryName/PatchName.zip".

More options are in VMware KB. Please see that as well.

    See you soon.

  • ESXi update

    am under Esxi 5.0.0 515841

I have update the Esxi with the keys v Manager Update Center today shows Esxi 5.0.0 1117897

    I think it's 5.0.0.0 u2 can be

My question is why it was not u1 5.1 upgrade last

can update us esxi 5.0.0.0 to 5.1 last using the update for the v Center Manager?

There is difference between patch/update and upgrade. An upgrade (which is version 5.0 to 5.1) you must first upgrade vCenter Server and Manager updated to version 5.1, as vCenter Server 5.0 supports not 5.1 ESXi hosts. Once the server vCenter Server and Update Manager are both set to level, you can create a baseline "Host Upgrade" to upgrade the hosts. Make sure that your hardware is supported before upgrading.

BTW. always ensure that the hosts and vCenter Server perform ina supported configuration (see the Interoperability matrix product VMware)

  • vCenter Server and Manager on the same virtual machine and on the same host ESXi update that they manage

    Hi all

I have a question to which I did not respond.

I have an ESXi 5 on Proliant DL380 G7 server host. I want to install vCenter Server and Manager Update on one of the Server 2008 R2 VM on the same host. I know it's possible, but my question is how Update manager will provide updates to the same ESXi host it will run on? The update is applied every time host must spend in maintenance mode and power off the virtual computer running on this subject which means he'll kill VM where vCenter Server and Update Manager is running and the update will fail right?

Is that possible at all or the VCS and UM such as a virtual computer operating point is updated to other guests if you have them or vMotion as VM to another host when you want to update the VCS and UM host is running?

    Thanks in advance.

It will not work.  You will need at least two hosts.  This way you can vMotion the vCenter VM to another host.  From there, you can use VUM.  Otherwise, you will need to patch the host as a stand-alone host.

See below for patching a standalone host

  • ESXi update 5 questions!

I had a problem: the network of the virtual computer fails sometimes, run all the virtual machines on the Internet all of a sudden, there is no problem with the ISP, esx ssh and remote connections work but VM network is out of service.

I think the update-ing the esxi for patch 15/03/2012 (build 623860) will allow them to solve!

    There is a problem:

I run VMWare ESXi Driver Rollup 2 version and I am about to update to build 623860, patch 15/03/2012, I run the command:

esxcli software sources vib liste--depot=/vmfs/volumes/datastore1/update/623860.zip | more to see what it's going to upgrade and downgrade, but the problem is that this net-tg3 driver is decommissioning which I think causes me problems, as he provoked with the original image of esxi to August 2011 (you can see my other thread).

    Latest version installed:
    Broadcom_bootbank_net - tg3_3.120 h .v50. 2 - 1OEM.500.0.0.472560 (new!)
    Name: net-tg3
    Payloads: net-tg3

This is the latest version, but the last patch will downgrade to:

    NET-tg3, VMware 2011-08-19 3.110h.v50.4 - 4vmw.500.0.0.469512 VMwareCertified Downgrade

    Question 1:

How can I make it without her screw my network card, making it unusable?

    Using the same net-tg3 driver!

    Question 2:
Is it possible to back up my current configuration of esx and use it to restore if something goes wrong with driver?

If that's the case, then how?

Before the update-ing, I wanted to ask here for help!

I have no access to the machine, but someone is closely in case something happens and if something goes wrong with the network to be able to restore to the old version.

The main reason for the update-ing, is the virtual computer's network fall suddenly...

    Thank you

    Catalin Alin

And if you are worried to screw up your installation...

You can restore the State before your update by pressing SHIFT - R to the ESXi boot prompt and select the other bootbank to boot from.

  • Can NOT see the data store after ESXi update host?

    Hi all

We use the host ESXi 3.5 on DELL PE 2850 with RAID 5 local storage.  Today, I ran utility update for the host VMware and firmware updated BIOS and RAID on the host computer before a restart of the system.  After the reboot, the system correctly loads the operating system and when I check for storage, the data (with critical VM) store is missing.  Can not see that again.

Please help me to recover my data with the virtual machines in her store.

    Thank you

    Nadine

ESXi is installed on the same Partition RAID 5, which is located in the VMFS data store? for example. do you know that the partition is still intact?

According to what the RAID firmware upgrade has done, it is possible that you may need to set the LVM. EnableResignature option 1 if the score ended with a new UUID.
