50 Firefox on Win10 now refuses to open files the

FF50 on Win10 will not open local files, such as file:///C:/Users/MN/Documents/something/index.html. She claims that the file is inaccessible. No problem on macOS 10.12.1. It's VERY new behavior - I've never had this problem before. I run an application that produces web pages, and I need to preview them before you download, it is a MAJOR obstacle. Chrome and Edge have no trouble with that.

I think it's done for reasons of security, but I need to be able to ignore it. I'll take the risk.

If you start from

file:///C:/

You can navigate your way to this folder? To what extent can you get?

For the love of science, could test you a few other methods open index.html in Firefox to see if none of them work:

  • Double-click the file in Windows Explorer (if Firefox is your default browser)
  • in Windows Explorer, right click on the file > open with (if indicated)
  • Drag - move the file in Windows Explorer to a Firefox tab
  • in Firefox: File menu > open the file (or Ctrl + O)

One of the changes in Firefox 48 + title is e10s, separating the browser interface process the process of content page (happy process move plugin - container.exe). When you first install Firefox (or empty your profile), Firefox evaluates if your system is compatible with e10s and sets a flag to enable a at your next session. That would explain how the second run was different from the first, so let's check on that.

Are you using e10s?

You can check if you have this feature enabled as follows. Either:

  • button '3-bar' menu > '? ' button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > troubleshooting information
  • type or paste everything: in the address bar and press enter/return

In the first table on the page, find the line "Multiprocess Windows" and see if the number on the left side of the fraction is greater than zero. If so, you are using e10s.

If you use e10s:

To determine if this feature is causing this problem, you can turn off as follows:

(1) in a new tab, type or paste Subject: config in the address bar and press enter/return. Click on the button promising to be careful.

(2) in the search above the list box, type or paste the cars and make a pause so that the list is filtered

(3) double-click the preference browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 to switch the value from true to false

Note: the exact name of this preference may vary, but it will start by browser.tabs.remote.autostart

On your next startup of Firefox, it must be run in the traditional way. Any difference?
