8.1 win a crash. Find that Mozilla had lost all files thereafter.

The race you bird for a few years, a happy user.
Now on earn 8.1, with you bird 31.5.
This morning, after normal shutdown last night, would not restart. After several attempts, he says 'repair disc error. " Finally he is settled and started OK.
But when I started at Thunderbird, he had lost all his profiles. Another everthing was working normally.
Tried to do the system restore operation failed.
I've got profiles you bird (I save them weekly) and you bird was now back to normal, so now that I'm OK.
BUT in the last months, I had 2 or 3 crash with 'blue screen of death', who have themselves recovered but after each one, Thunderbird is not started normally, and I suspect now it is at the origin of all these failures somehow. They probably only since 8.1 Win app.
I notice one or even two other reports where the notice was to compress e-mail files regularly. I've always done. I have a lot of files and manage a lot of mail traffic.
So, I'm now beginning to wonder. Suggestions, please?

OK Matt, your argument is convincing.
I'm probably too old to try to move away from Windows to an alternative or a Mac, so I guess I'll have to continue to live with that sort of thing. Email is really important to me then maybe it is time to do everything in the cloud.
Thank you for the time you took with that, I'll take a good look on my hard drive!
