A screwdriver for my T42...

Hello everyone.

I am Big Guy Zee and I just signed up on the forums of lenovo today with a question that could help guys me with. I've had my IBM T42 (model 2373-Q91) for over a year now and it's not too bad, it came with 1 GB of RAM, but as most of you know there are 2 GB of RAM. It can still be slow sometimes, so I am considering an upgrade.

Now unfortunately, Im sure both of my RAM slots are exhausted. A location is easy access (to the base, which is used up), but the other is under the keyboard. (come on, why there?) I know a place where I can get a couple of RAM sticks cheap1GB but there is a problem, for me to access this location has heard to reach, I have to UN - screw a lot of screws, and I can't find a decent screwdriver that is the right size. I used the smallest I could find but still no luck.

So I was wondering, have you taken your T42 keyboard? What type of screwdriver did you use? It was special in some way? Can I find it online (as I am from the United Kingdom)?

I have a screwdriver OK for simple slot, but part of me wants to spend in its entirety. Can you help me?

Thank you

Problem solved, and on top of the upgrade my T42 in a fast 2 GB my keyboard is much better. Before that my space bar (and a few other buttons) works only if you press it right in the Center, now it works even if I press it on the other side (not just on the edge, but it's still an improvement.)

Unfortunately, it wasn't the screwdriver I had helped me, but a PC Repair guy towards the bottom of the road help me loosen the screws (it makes look so easy!), so I upgraded and tighten screws myself.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll pop if more problems.

  • 1.25 GB of RAM - Acceptable for a T42?

Hello and seasons greetings to all.

I recently bought a used T42p (2373) on XP that came with 512 MB of RAM. He ran like an eagle, however, I decided to update my RAM with a 1 GB extra, which totals to 1.25 (a 1 GB more 256 MB). The 1 GB memory in question is a DDR-333 PC2700 333 MHz and 200 pins. I can't be sure what the 256 is, although I suspect that it was originally shipped with the laptop if that helps.

Windows recognizes the additional memory, but acted as I made the change. First, he takes his time on the Welcome screen when booting (about one minute to two minutes) and host process errors are frequent when I open certain programs and folders.

My question is that my situation memory is acceptable, should it work with the T42 or I would be better to remove the piece of 256 and it works on 1 GB? I searched around and haven't found the answers.

Hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

Just to let you know, I realized what was fast on my laptop. It wasn't a faulty memory but AVG Antivurus! Well. Furthermore, I believe that the host process errors are caused by my sound card, who chooses to work in his own time.

Get a Thinkpad sure taught me a lot! I must say after 4/5 weeks I love him to bits.

    Kind regards

  • Feet for the T42?

A friend gave my boyfriend a L42, and until now it works very well. One problem, however, is that we have not been able to locate the 'feet' on the bottom through which you can lift the rear part of the laptop. I read the references to the "leveling legs", but we cannot find them. Someone at - it advice?

    Thank you!

Yes, we can get you the manual and plastic case parts are available but rooms not only "detach". Either someone secretly takes a screwdriver for her while not looking or there is a failure somewhare in the hinge system that can run loose screws. Can we have a little more description or maybe a photo?

  • 1.5 GB of RAM in a T42?

Is it acceptable to run different capacities of the sticks of RAM in both locations for a T42 to reach a total of 1.5 GB of RAM?

Machine has 2 x 512 sticks currently installed, but would benefit from a little more punch. It shot up to 1.5 would be more than enough, she would have to buy a single stick and would avoid the need to Tinker to remove, and then reinstall the keyboard. What adds to what, at first glance, the sensible solution. However, I have always learned in the past, during the consideration of upgrading the RAM in older machines I had, that the two memory sticks must be "balanced" i.e. be of equal capacity. This advice still applies for a somewhat newer machine like the T42? Was it ever legitimate advice in any case for this issue, or just a ruse the part of vendors to sell more RAM?

    Thank you.

T42 use dual channel memory as T43 machines later, so 1.5 GB is perfectly fine and will improve overall performance. Of course, maxing out at 2 GB would be even better...

    I hope this helps.

  • T42 wifi with linux...

    Hello

am installing debian linux 5.0 on t42s.  usually I get them on ebay with the cards already installed wifi and it is no harm at all to lift the machine with debian. However I got recently a t42 without wifi card so I got a (by intel) from ebay and installed myself. I'm sure that it is physically installed OK because when I start to professional xp splash screen the little wifi icon lights. I didn't by installing xp well. that the wifi icon does not light before putting the new wifi adapter.

I'm trying to set up this machine as an xp dual boot and debian. I usually install debian via net install. with my other t42s this process via the wifi was nice and it worked just to the right.

However, when I try to do an installation of debian using the adapter wifi on this computer, the installer says that it cannot configure the dhcp using wifi (but it can if I plug it into the cable net ether).

is there something else I should do to logicaly install wifi for the debian installer can recognise him? as the access ibm button for example use?

or is there simply no linux for this wifi card driver intel? I think that there is a linux driver for any product to intel but I could be wrong. WFI with linux it's a little tricky.

Maybe if I use ether net for installation I get the wifi linux driver later.

If not, what is the oem for the t42 wireless adapter?

    Please notify.

I have three total t42 units. two with model number 23734TU and the other (the troubled unit) with model number 2373-4TU. the difference is the dash between the numbers 3 and 4.

Based on the information you provided I agree that the 2100 b card should work with the 4TU-2373.

the only way I know how to test for sure everything flows through the configuration script in windows xp. I wanted to avoid this but I don't see any easy choice.

I guess that if the wifi under the display icon lights up then the card is functional. Turns on the xp splash screen.

otherwise I could download the latest debian installer and see if it gets the card to operate under a facility. net a debian-installer an integrety check maybe I'll try that.

My big concern is that the card should work when operating by linux.

I remember well the card could only be installed one way. Perhaps one of the two antenna broke while I was reassembling. I don't think, but I could open it and check. but I wanted to avoid this.

SOLUTION! the solution is to use the map of cisco wireless.

  • Please help t42 display size!

I took the hard drive to a t42 with a 14 inch screen and put it in a t42 with a 15 "screen.  Now I have a dektop 14 inches on my 15 inch display!  lol how I resize the desktop to actually fit my 15 inch display?  I can't find a way to do it.  If it was a separate monitor it would be easy, but since it is a laptop, it is not quite as simple.  Thanks for any help you can provide!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I think that you need to install the correct video driver for your T42 15 ". Also, try to change the resolution:- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/personalize/resolution.mspx

Let us know 7 nature of the two systems product numbers, it looks like 2668-KHU and can be found on the back label.

  • MBP 2009 HD dead-ish - what to do next?

So, apparently, the hard drive in my MacBook Pro mid-2009 is close to death.

I had trouble with him the other night and after reboot, I got a kernel panic, basically "cannot find driver for ACPI platform." You can see the full screen tohttp://i.imgur.com/DHFg9PUh.jpg

I tried to go in recovery mode and using the disc to check/repair utility to see what would happen. I forget exactly what happened when I ran first, but now I got a message that it is not repairable. Screen example here:http://i.imgur.com/O57e6NBh.jpg

At one point when I booted into single user mode (or was it the verbose mode?) I got ' WARNING SATA: enable auto service has failed. Generally run fsck didn't have good results. This is the screen the last time I did it in single user mode: http://i.imgur.com/C6S2gCph.jpg

When I try to start it in safe mode finally gets about 1/5 of the way through the progress bar and then stops.

This disc is about 6 years old and has been widely used (and doesn't have a lot of space on this issue rest, I know..) so I'm not surprised, he's in trouble.

I'm confused but I have my next steps should be.

-Something like Disk Warrior conceivable would be able to repair any corruption or other issues?

-I am able to use the feature to reinstall OS X utility recovery section to install a new copy of the Mavericks? Which would be just a waste of time even if I can do it?

-I don't have access to other Mac and don't have the original 10.6 install DVD. I have to install 10.6, 10.6.8 and then re - update download Mavericks (or more)?

-I realize that the current content on the disc may be roasted. I have a time machine backup of a few months ago.

-I currently have no bootable external drive/device.

-J' was going to ask if there are files that I can change so that I get an error in single user mode that can help, but when I try to mount the drive:http://i.imgur.com/U2QIhPul.jpg

-Ideally, I'll replace this dead-ish with a ssd drive, even if I even rolled my head around exactly what kind I need. (i.e. do most ship with the spacer? How I format once installed and put on the operating system as I think I can't use internet recovery? Would be something like the MX200 crucial work of 500GB 2.5 ssd "in this machine? "I have the screwdriver for the rear screws and also a T6 for the reader).

More precisely, it is a MBP 13.3 "2.53 Ghz, 8 GB of ram, 250 GB HD - MB991LL/A

    Thank you. sad face.

Install a new drive.  The Crucial SSD will be compatible.

You will need to install the original OSX and then switch to Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  Will then allow you to install a more recent OSX.

    Ciao.

    Hello

Here's the original specifications. your T40 left the factory with:

    ThinkPad T40 (2374-BG9)

Based on 2374-8CU: P M 1.5 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB 5400 RPM HARD drive, XGA(1024x768) 14.1 TFT LCD, 32 MB ATI Radeon 7500, x - 8 24 x DVD (slim), Modem (CDC), Ethernet (LOM), upgradeable Wireless, Secure Chip (TCPA), UltraNav, battery 6 cells, WinXP Pro

"Scalable wireless" means that your T40 has not left the factory with a wireless card installed. However, IBM used this marketing term to indicate that the model has antennas wireless installed in the cover of the LCD Assembly and can easily get a mini-PCI Wireless card added. I opened dozens of T40 (including, I believe, some listed as 'wireless extensible') and I've never found one that doesn't have an internal wireless card installed. It seems most of these units have been upgraded with a card wireless at some point in their history. I also have a theory that many of these units 'scalable wireless' were purchased in bulk and had massive facilities by a secondary party wireless cards / technicians before being sold to the final retail market. It's just a theory of mine.

The T40 to East came with the three following of 'B' wireless cards:

WiFi wireless dual band ThinkPad 11 a/b PCI card adapter

    Cisco Aironet Wireless 802. 11 b

Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI adapt

These are the official names designated in service parts system - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p. It was all 'B' wireless adapters, but T40 can easily be upgraded to some of the 'G' wireless cards you see listed for the T42.

There is only one way to know for sure which (if any) wireless card your T40 has. You will need to remove the keyboard and take a look under the hood. Follow the steps described in the Manual of Maintenance of equipment - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p. Then we can help you locate the appropriate drivers.

Here are a few movies with step by step instructions that can help you and others who can be read:

  • T61 LCD issue

I suggest you download the HMM (the hardware maintenance manual) for your laptop. Not sure about your T61, I know that the T530 has a separate cable. I had a failure in a similar way as the description of your problem on my mother in law T530. I bought Qty 4 T530 of last year and was the only one to fail during the warranty. Lenovo has replaced the LCD and card system twice under warranty and that did not fix the problem. It was the cable. I usually buy used and tested good parts from sources other than Lenovo. More recently, I bought a DVD player for a T42 for $7.99 free shipping off eBay.
