A tab seems to always open. Why?

Windows 8.

When I open anything on Firefos, a new tab opens with "desktop" screen Why? I don't want to.

Larry K

The new tab is transparent and shows your Windows desktop, or it has a content that resembles your Windows desktop?

In some other recent discussions, additional tabs have been attributed to an extension of the type "speed dial". Try this:

Disable all non-essential or unrecognized extensions on page modules. Either:

  • CTRL + SHIFT + a
  • Firefox orange (or the Tools menu) button > Add ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, when in doubt, turn off. (Or delete).

Typically, a link will appear above at least an extension disabled to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links in the last step.

Any improvement?

  • I do not see in 19.0.2 cookies that I know are there in the window of the cookies I keep always open; Why not?

I keep the tools-> options-> show_cookies window open whenever Firefox is running. I want to see what sites are down cookies and I their aggressive management, since many sites ignore "do not follow." Sites like nytimes.com lose also, cookies that have read articles. I delete these cookies from counter to counter their surveillance efforts. Anyway, why I do this is not relevant to my question otherwise than to describe the technique that I use. After the upgrade to 19.0.2 the cookies window no longer displays the cookies. I know that they are there because I can always remove from tools-> clear_recent_history. The evidence: I have connection to google/finance and can see portfolio info staff. When I clear_recent_history-> cookies my session of google/finance updates the generic site, without all the personal info. I want to see the cookie real-time activity that I could before this upgrade. What has changed; Why; and how to restore my window in activity of cookie?

The article on private browsing has been very helpful and gives me another tool, I didn't know I had. I'm not looking for new features after an upgrade as a solid browser that gets the basics right is what I'm looking for. Less is more, as far as I'm concerned. As to not see the cookies in the cookies window, I cut up the pilot error... sort of. I keep the tools-> options-> privacy-> open show_cookies all the time so, I take the default settings for granted. By default, I mean when it opens after a Firefox upgraded it opens a size minimum, even once it has been used several times. So, apparently, after 19.0.2 that he opened in its smallest manifestation, not the way I usually view it. When it is smaller, you don't see its content. After poking and insistence at all to understand what was going on I, just for grins, pulled the corner marker to enlarge and I saw of the current set of cookies. Mea culpa for wasting everyone's time. Thanks for the vector to private browsing. I'll still use the cookies window to selectively blow those I want around the same during active sessions, i.e., subscription sites like nytimes.com that are free items and store results in a cookie. When you hit their arbitrary limit, they demand that you pay up to read more. I object to paying for news content that includes ads. I would gladly subscribe and pay a toll to get a textual context without advertising but I don't pay get their ads too... so I blow this cookie counter and read on. Thanks cor - el for your answer.

  • I have the windows open again in a new option to the selected tab but it always opens in the same window.

    Firefox v28.0, Mac OS X 10.9.2, 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7.

Running in safe mode. In the Preferences menu, I have the "open new window in a new tab instead" box checked but when I click on links the new page opens in the current window. If I order click on I have the ability to open the new window in a new tab

The setting in tools > Options > tabs: "new pages should be opened in ': 'a new tab/window' is for links that specify a target window to open the link.

This option allows to divert these links into a new tab instead of a new window.

Links that do not specify a target still open in the current tab, unless you redefine with a middle or click Ctrl left click (new tab) or a left click UPDATE (new window) or via the context menu.

I wish that whenever I open a second new too) tab, it should always open Google to make my search easier. If I want to change it, I'll do it manually. I also set Google as my search engine, still it does not automatically appear on opening a new tab.
    Pl Guide.

Here's how to specify the page to display in a new tab:

    (1) in a new tab, type or paste Subject: config in the address bar and press ENTER. Click on the button promising to be careful.

    (2) in the search above the list box, type or paste newtab and make a pause so that the list is filtered

    (3) double-click the preference browser.newtab.url and enter your favorite page:

    • (Default) page thumbnails = > subject: newtab
    • Blank tab = > subject: empty
    • Built-in Firefox homepage = > topic: welcome
    • Any other page = > full URL of the page

Note: Google will always redirect to the secure, so version, save a step by pasting the full URL: https://www.google.com/

Press Ctrl + t to open a new tab and check that it worked. Fixed?

    Some traps:

If Firefox will not let you change this setting: you can have what is called SearchProtect on your system.

Firefox if allows you to save your changes, but he doesn't know: one of your extensions may be the substitution of her. You can consult, disable and/or remove extensions on page modules. Either:

    • CTRL + SHIFT + a
    • "3-bar" menu button (or tools) > Add-ons

In the left column, click on Extensions

If the modification works during your session, but returns to the previous setting at the next startup: you could have a user.js file in your personal settings Firefox (your Firefox profile folder). This article describes how to track down and delete the file: How to fix preferences that will not save. Or you may have a software like Advanced SystemCare that blocks / restores changes to browser settings.

    A little luck?

  • Why Firefox always opens with the last session tabs?

When I open firefox always opens with the last session tabs? How can I solve this problem?

You can check if you have a user.js file in the Firefox profile folder that affects the pref browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once true value.

The user.js file is present than if you or another software has created this file and normally it wouldn't be here.
You can check its contents with a text editor (right click: 'Open with'; do not double-click).
The user.js file is read whenever Firefox is started and initializes the preferences to the specified value in this file, so the preferences set via user.js can be changed temporarily for the current session.

You can remove the user.js file if you do not create this file yourself.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder currently in use:

Windows hides certain default file extensions.
Among them are .html, .ini and .js, .txt, so you can see only file name without the file extension.
You can see the type of actual file (file extension) in the properties of the file via the context menu in Windows Explorer.

  • Why my browser to Firefox v6.02 always open *.csv (separator: semicolon) file in another tab instead of downloading a file? I have no option to right click to save this file.

My v6.02 browser Firefox always open *.csv (separator: semicolon) file in another tab instead of downloading a file? I have no option to right click to save this file. My PC is windows XP sp2.

The CSV file is sent as text/plain. If you want to save the file then right-click and use them "save the link as" to save the file or hold the Alt key and left-click that should work on Windows.

  • I set firefox to open a file type (.) SGF) w / a program, but it doesn't, so I put it to save/apply and no work option, it always opens file link in a new tab.

I went into Options and set the. SGF with Smartgo open file. He refuses to do. Clicking on a link to one. SGF file simply open the file as a text in a new tab.

Given that it did not work, I tried to get firefox to download instead, because then I can open it using the window file type associations. It will not download the file, unless I actually do a right-click and save-as in the link.

It is tedious when displaying a lot of these files. I even put it to wonder after seeing the download option did not work. He don't ask me. What happens here?

    Also, I use firefox 23

EDIT: It seems to be the specific Web site. Some sites will allow me the option to open it in Smartgo, others just it open in a tab in the form of text. What is causing this gap and can it be overcome thanks to the browser settings?

A sample Web site to highlight the issue is:
    http://igokisen.Web.FC2.com/WR/LG.html
clicking on one of these links will not download, open, or ask questions about what you want to do with the file.

What happens if the server sends the file as text/plain.
You can see if you open "tools > Page Info > general": Content-Type: text/plain

Sent files that this way is always open in a tab.

  • When I opened a new tab, I'm always redirected to a page which I don't see, how do I fix

About two days ago, I noticed that everytime I open a new tab in the browser opens a new page instead of a vacuum... im always redirected to the site https://sg.yahoo.com/...how can I fix?... This is the result of a malicious program?... Thanks in advance for helping me

Hi, it could be malicious, but first try this: Type Subject: config in the address bar, press ENTER, accept the warning, scroll to browser.newtab.url and make sure that 'Value' is defined Subject: newtab (right click > change, change it if necessary, taking care to not to change what anyone else). You will then need to restart Firefox.

As an alternative, you can use the add-on SearchReset.

If the new tab gets changed back once again, it is possible that an add-on or theme is the cause, then try Mode without failure of Firefox to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily disables hardware acceleration, restores some settings and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart Firefox Safe mode in the Help menu:

    • Click the menu button

      click Help

then select restart with disabled modules.

If Firefox does not work, you can start Firefox in Mode safe as follows:

    • On Windows: Hold down the SHIFT key when you open the desktop Firefox or shortcut in the start menu.
    • On Mac: Hold the option key during the startup of Firefox.
    • On Linux: Exit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox-safe-mode
(you may need to specify the installation path of Firefox for example/usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "start mode safe."

If the problem is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps described in the section Troubleshooting extensions, themes and problems of hardware acceleration to resolve common Firefox problems to find the cause.

To exit safe mode of Firefox, simply close Firefox and wait a few seconds before you open Firefox for normal use again.

Can I set a default to always open a link in a new window instead of a new tab?

No, not to always open a link in a new window. If a link opens in the same window or a new window depends on the creator page specifying new or empty for this link. Firefox can divert the news/white window in a tab instead, which is the default setting.

If you do not want tabs when a new/empty window is specified, deselect the pref to open new windows in a new tab instead , in tools > Options > tabs
