Activate a path dead redundant storage iSCSI

I have a known issue between ESX 4 and EqualLogic iSCSI storage array. During periods of low i/o activity I lose my redundant path to some data for example stores

My questions are

Can I use a command like esxcfg-mpath to activate this way?

ESX will automatically activate this way after a period of time?

Thank you

I guess there is something wrong, because no path should be dead, please have a vmkernel check connect resulting in dead path

  • Change of storage iSCSI IPs

    Hello

We will be consolidating the 2 sites in one soon, and in the context of that we'll have the blades moving and storage iSCSI from one site to the other and re - IP them in the process.

That's what I had in mind, please let me know if Miss me something:

    -Stop everything and moving equipment

-Fuel storage iSCSI and re - IP

-Power of blades and change their IPs

(at this point all data warehouses and virtual machines on show them also inaccessible)

-Add the IPs blade storage unit to allow access

-In storage adapters / iSCSI / dynamic discovery, remove the old storage IPs and add new IPs, rescan storage

Here, we should have our data storages and all VMs back on their show normal, that we should be good to start turning on VMs.

Anything I missed? I did similar work a few times, but not in the last year or so, just wanted to do a validation test. We lack ESXi 4.6 build 1050704.

    Thank you

If it worked very well, just as described above. I have to award points to myself :-)

    Thank you

  • Why do I have multiple paths to the storage with 1 NIC?

We try to get our facility to the place where there only one active correction in a data store by setting only 1 active NETWORK card on a switch or a port group. It works well for some data warehouses, but not others. Our storage is active/passive and data warehouses on the LUNS accessed via controller B show a path which is what we want and on accessible LUNS via controller data warehouses a show 2 paths to the data store that we don't want. Ive attached a few screenshots.

Active cards and active paths are not the same thing.  An active NIC on the server, but several destinations, gives several paths through this unique Server NIC, but multiple cards storage network destination.

If you really want to limit the number of paths, you must limit your destinations as well.

In addition, on this screen where you can see/manage the available paths to the storage, you right-click and disable the path you want to be usable.

    Background

We currently have a 1 GB LAN (Cisco 3750 battery) \storage (san is LeftHand 4500) network that will not provide the e/s, we need for our SQL server due to a limitation of the NMP esxi a company proposes a new solution of storage for us.

    Overview of storage design:

2, 1 GB of NIC quad by the host in support of our networks (VM\MGMT, vMotion, DMZ, iSCSI).  Add a dual port 8 gb FC HBAS on each host for storage.  I then path redundancy but not the redundancy of HBA cards.  Can I use the existing 2, 1 GB iscsi NIC as the standby for the FC HBA just to limp along until I vMotion, virtual machine to sql server on a server that has a FC HBA?  Obviously the performance of I/o would be take a hit but I rather he would perform badly only totally cut off IO.

Maybe that's not possible even remotley, but I look forward to comments.  Thank you!

While I've seen this work his * explicitly * not supported by EMC.

  • storage iSCSI with UCS

    Hi all

Can I ask a question regarding the connection of iSCSI storage for use with UCS. Look at us with Nimble iSCSI based storage & want to understand best practice recommendations on how to connect it to UCS to get the best level of performance & reliability / resilience etc.

Another issue is more closely how VMware deals with loss of connectivity on a path (where double connections are the installation program from the warehouse to the tissues), would he re - route traffic to the path running?

    Any suggestion would be appreciated.

    Hello Kassim,

Currently the agile iSCSI storage is certified with UCS 2.0.3 firmware version.

  • The upgrade to ESXi 4.1 with storage iSCSI software to ESXi 5.5

I intend to upgrade ESXi 4.1 with which I have attached to ESXi 5.5 iSCSI software storage

I've updated all my guests who were on the SAN storage with no problems.

I would like to know that if it there's nothing I should take care before I update the host connected iSCSI to ESXi 5.5, as for the hosts with SAN attached storage I made to remove the cables of SAN before upgrading the host.

Also, if all known problems, you will be informed during the upgrade to ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.5 with iSCSI Software storage, please let me know?

If there is no different process to upgrade coz in ESXi 4.1 I do not see this link ports of iSCSI vmkernel ports software iSCSI but I know in ESXi5.5 we have to or I just launch a procedure of standard upgrade via the Update Manager and everything will be taken care?

    Thanks in advance

With ESXi prior to version 5, linking ports had to be done via command line. However, if it has been configured correctly, you should be able to upgrade to ESXi 5.5 (assuming that the host has not been previously updated since version 3). BTW. the last time that I disconnected the host of storage for an upgrade has been with ESX 3.0.

  • All share storage iscsi connect same target and volume

    Hi Alls,

I have openfiler and do 1 iscsi volume share in two ESX hosts with even described as iscsi target.

So a (first) ESX have dynamic config discover iscsi target and the format of finishing, so ESX block size have new data store come from iscsi.

Another ESX must sign in with the same ip address of the iscsi target and even target iqn. then discover iscsi and rescan datastore have see the name of name identical to that found on ESX first data store.

(Note for second ESX is not block format size but rescan HBAS/VMSF found eponymous store data like first ESX)

    Issue.

    1. for iscsi target that have one objective and correspond to a volume on openfiler can operate with 2 ESXs at the same time with the same target?

2 if not, how to configure shared storage with openfiler that can used data volume on openfiler?

    Kind regards

Like I said before, vMotion can saturate an uplink, so you will need to keep an eye on it. If you want to perform vMotion on the same vSwitch anyway, I suggest you create a group of separate ports with private IP (e.g. 192.168.x.y) addresses for her and let the two active vmnic for this group of ports allow failover in the event of an uplink failure.

  • vCenter storage iSCSI 5.5 and shared between virtual machines

I have just two 2012 Win computers virtual server in the cluster.  I've prested my iSCSI LUNS and the ESX host can see them and I might add in order to become a data store.

My VMs Win2012 need to share the storage for a cluster SQL database.  I have never done this and everything I tried at this point has failed.  I tried to create the ROW, but that only worked to connect it to a player on one of the virtual machines.

I'm sure this is possible, but I'm not even sure where to look.  Is it really that RDM is for or is there another way?  Looks like I have would be sufficient to use the initator iSCSI in Windows to connect to my SAN but that would probably slow.

    Any help would be great!

Yes it can be done - have you seen http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-55-setup-mscs.pdf

  • Gross storage iSCSI and VMDK questions

I don't know if this is the best place for this question, so let me know if it is better to have another forum.

I have ESX4 Setup on a server with a box of Equalogic serving 500g on iSCSI disks. For now, I have a 500 GB slice that I use only for the OS data and store all on OS VM.

One of these virtual machines is a replacement for our mail server on Ubuntu 10.04 server that I want to run Zimbra. In our current setup, we have a physical 400 GB RAID 1 implemented as the/opt directory to store the install zimbra and the data store, this config partition makes I/O and backup issues a wink. I want to replicate this model, but I'm having problems.

As I understand it, I have two options on the new VM server.  I can attach a raw disk via iSCSI via the menu vCenter as a connected virtual drive, or I can config the iSCSI connector in Ubuntu to access the drive directly.  I prefer the former because it makes things simple, but what I will meet an error when I try to connect the drive.

Basically, it forces me to choose the location of the data store virtual and I have only two options, the 147 GB SAS on the physical ESX Server or the iSCSI drive 500 GB that I have attached to vCenter for the OS data. In both cases the error that I get States that there is not enough space on the data store for the extra 500 GB added to the virtual machine by attaching it.

Yes, is there a way to add this iSCSI disk to the virtual machine without being part of the VMDK files? Or what I need to reach via iSCSI inside the Ubuntu VM? It would be nice to take advantage of snapshots and others, but I don't see how to do this job unless I have duplicate all storage making it OSdata drive big enough to accomidate the attachment of additional 500 GB to this virtual machine and even all my other virtual machines that have similar needs. This seems impractical because it would literally data duplicated without the benefit of the RAID or parallel I/O.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

We've covered this before, but you're absolutely sure that "OSDATA EQ iSCSI" is formatted with a block size of 4MB?

  • Set up multiple paths to EqualLogic PS4000 iSCSI

I have two Dell PowerEdge M610 in a PowerEdge M1000e that my team was given as units of seeds (thanks Dell) and we ended up buying storage, they sent with it, an EqualLogic PS4000.  The representative of Dell came and helped to get the basic running configuration and how iSCSI worked and showed us a doc (the same doc Configuring_VMware_vSphere_Software_iSCSI_with_Dell_EqualLogic_PS_Series_Storage.pdf noted many threads here) on how get v4.1 ESX (i) running with this storage.  We all stood up and running most of the time before he left, but after going on documentation, again, I have seen that we should be able to establish connections mutable and "Round Robin" to improve performance.  As I see so far in the two vSphere Client and in the management of the EqualLogic console console, I get only one per server (as seen on the attached screenshots).  I've been beating my head on this for the last few days trying to get the connections going.  In fact, I've seen it work once but for other reasons, I had to redo the raid on the host computer and reload and have not been able to get it working again... :'-(

So, here's how the hardware is configured.  From the module of control PS4000 0, I have eth0 goes 1 Dell PowerConnect M6220 in the slot C2 chassis, eth1 goes to another port M6220 in C2.  If the storage is connected directly to the chassis.  And the same configuration on the modal control 1.  These ports connect to the vmnic4 & 5.

    iSCSI2 1 0 vmnic4

    0 1 vmnic5 iSCSI1

So what I am doing wrong?  I tried to read on other threads, but haven't read the answer to this question.  Thanks for your help.

There is a step in this configuration guide where you link all of your VMkernel ports to the iSCSI initiator.  You will remember to do this step?

What looks like the output of the following control air: esxcli swiscsi nic list vmhba39 d

You should see the vmk1 and vmk2 in there.

  • Upgrade and migration of 3.5.0upd0 to 4.0upd1 and shared storage iSCSI

    Hi people,

I've got 2 ESX host: Alpha and beta. Two of them are connected to a cabin of iSCSI with some created shared storage drive (all VMFS3 v3.31). And both had ESX 3.5.0 update0

I migrated all the VMS running in the Alpha host for shared storage and made host Beta to run (clones cold or simply reassign files). Then I bâtait Alpha from scratch and I installed vSphere 4.0 in it. I also created in its local storage space bit a new virtual machine with vCenter4 inside. It has worked well.

Then I had to migrate Beta and its virtual machines, too. I first tried to manage the host with vCenter4, but it is not backward compatible.

So I'll use the host update utility to upgrade beta I saw in a video tutorial, but my doubts are...

        • Option 1:

Disable all virtual machines managed in host Beta.

Configure the iSCSI client in Alpha, add storage shared cabin and try to manage the virtual machines already extinct. This reduces the time to downgrade.

Upgrade Vmware Tools in the virtual machines (v4 to v7 type VM). Required reboots.

Upgrade host Beta (with no SMV in there and unplug the cable of iSCSI) vSphere4.

Connect and configure the iSCSI version beta customer.

Manage the host with the new vCenter4 Beta.

Configure the vMotion, DRS etc. in both hosts.

        • Option 2:

Disable all virtual machines managed in host Beta.

Upgrade host Beta (with no SMV in there and unplug the cable of iSCSI) vSphere4. Downgrade time increases.

Connect and configure the iSCSI version beta customer.

Upgrade Vmware Tools in the virtual machines (v4 to v7 type VM). Required reboots.

Manage the host with the new vCenter4 Beta.

Configure the vMotion, DRS etc. in both hosts.

Which option is the best? Maybe is it possible to apply a third? What do you think?

    Thanks in advance.

    without loss of performance?

Yes. VM with v4 works very well.

The only problem is that you lose some new features, like the new drivers and FT.

Note also that Standalone VMware Converter 4.x can also convert between v4 and v7 and vice versa.

  • What is the path for the storage of cookies

On my computer, I installed WinPatrol and at the end of each browsing session, I used to make use of it's 'see the cookies' the function to remove. Recently, I had reason to update FireFox and since then the cookies in WinPatrol visualization function no longer works. • How to activate the path with the subtractions in selection

    Hello

This is my first post here and I must say that I thank, you are here because I'm pretty frustrated.

I am new to using the pen tool. For the last day or two, I'm working on it pretty hard in Photoshop CC and I think I have a general handle on how it basically works now, but can't get to a domain.

I just finished a rather complex path. After doing the outdoor path, always using the pen tool, I changed the tool of "combining forms" to "subtract the shape front" and make internal cuts of the way that I wanted. When I had finished, I thought that everything I would need to do is to hit the icon selection at the bottom of the path window and a complete selection, including the subtractions would be taken. Unfortunately when I did only the subtraction have been included in the selection even though they were clearly there in the path. Please can someone explain what can happen here?

    Thank you

The outermost path does not have the value "Combining forms" or "Exclude the shapes overlapping" or it is not the subPathItem facing down.

Select it, and then change the setting in the Options bar (window > Options) or simply select all the subPathItems and put them to "exclude the shapes that overlap.

    • 6 GB OF RAM ECC

    • 2 x 1 GB NIC

    • 2 x PCI - X slots (PCI - X slot 133 MHz and PCI - X connector 100 / 66 MHz)

I want to add more space "VM/Guest" and not spending too much money.

    What is my best solution?

    1. Find a compatible ESATA 3Gbps controller card (I have a nice 500 GB SATA Drive laying around)? ...

    2. Or should I get out an old box and throw a Gigabit NETWORK card and a SATA inside player and try my hand at Openfiler? I have yet to try it.

    3. ... Or... something else?

Could someone help me hand choose either a PCI controller card - X ESATA/SATA (is - it possible or am I limited by my attached picture?) or a NETWORK card for my spare box (if it is not an old)?  I understand "_ _passthrough configuration"allows my virtual machine to hardware on the host computer directly, but I'm not clear how this effects my plans you want.

    I read:

Get started with what you have. Do not pass anything. Set up the old PC you have as a NFS storage device. Use openfiler or? That will allow you to do some investigation/tests you want to do. Keep your eyes open for a local RAID controller or on an old server with lots of fast scsi storage you can add such as NFS or?
