Adding secondary management NIC to ESXi host

Hello

We currently have a customer demand to add secondary management NIC to the ESXi servers ourselves and the client can connect to hosts if vCenter becomes unavailable.

Is someone can confirm if it is feasible or will host blend and become inaccessible? Sorry if this is an obvious answer, it's just that I have never seen configuration with management NIC

Thanks in advance.

We currently have a customer demand to add secondary management NIC to the ESXi servers ourselves and the client can connect to hosts if vCenter becomes unavailable.

Can clarify you what exactly you mean by that? A single management interface are accessible by some many different clients, as long as it is accessible. Are there limits where the client manages the ESXi host from an internal network and you need to access externally via public IP, another for networking?

In this case your would create a management interface 2nd vmkernel on the external network and to face together the default route of the external gateway routing and insert static routes for the internal network using the internal network gateway. So basically the same thing you would do to any IP multi-hosted system.

  • Cisco UCS 5108 add NIC to ESXi host

    Hello

I'm quite new in the world of the UCS, so I slowly read up on it. We currently have a laboratory with a 5108 that host two of our esxi5 servers. When I say lab, I mean a configuration that is not in production yet, and if I can use it to learn right now. I just now each server I create gives me only 2 network cards to work with, so I would like to add. I have attemtpted to add a new network adapter for the service model and apply it, but I get the following error.

"There are not enough global resources. Not enough available vNIC.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if 2 is my limit.

    Thank you

    Welcome to Dennis,

The quantity of NICs you can create depending on the model of the adapter.

    E.g.

See the diagram below for the virtual interfaces supported by the adapter model

When you use the VIC M81 maximum interfaces that you create also depends on the number of links between IOM (chassis) and interconnections of fabric).  56 is assuming that you have 4 links of each fabric of interconnection of each IOM.

In addition, blades of large width (B250, B440) can support two adapters mezz, so you can adjust the vnic/vhba max.

    Kind regards

  • vCenter 5.0 manage 5.5 ESXi hosts?

Can anyone confirm whether or not a server vCenter 5.0 can manage hosts running ver 5.5?

    Thank you

    Answer is NO:

vCenter server is backward compatible. vCenter server 5.5 can handle hosts that are 5.0 but vCenter server 5.0 can not handle hosts that are 5.5.

  • Trying to create a shared via iSCSI storage. Storage shows is not the second ESXI host

I created an iSCSI lun and gone through the process of adding it to my first ESXI host. It displays well in storage adapters-> Details and I can also add as a data store.

When I try and the same thing on my second ESXI, the iSCSI host does not appear under storage adapters-> Details (although properties are correct within the parameters of the iSCSI software card) and I can not add it as a data store.

If I remove compleatley from the first host I can then add it to the second, but (I think) need in the two hosts to use a shared storage?

    I'm doing something wrong?

    Thank you

What iSCSI solution do you use? Are there limits set on the number of connections?

  • Add a 5.1 ESXI host to vcenter server 5.0

    Hi all

I just installed an esxi5.1 host and tried to add in vcenter server 5.0 without success.

    The error is:

A general error occurred: Timed waits vpxa to start

Is it possible to do? If not, is documented somewhere? I searched a lot and found nothing relevant.

The installation was made using an iso file, the new facility, in a shared, storage warehouse that has been formatted.

I don't want vcenter server 5.1 as the impact of my infrastructure is high.

    Thanks for the help!

VMware product interoperability matrix got the update and you would need 5.1 vCenter to manage 5.1 ESXi hosts

It is an ugly one. At least a restart if not re-install. To minimize downtime, you can close out of virtual machines to the inventory and put them on another host/cluster.

  • Sizing of prescriptions for IOPS ESXi hosts / s

    Hello!

I was managing a few ESXi hosts in multiple data centers and we begin to look at options to consolidate the virtual machines on a shared storage to take advantage of vMotion and HA.

Reading communities and various Springs around the ' net, I learned that a good indication of the Ops ARE / s by the ESXi can be calculated from the graph of disk performance using read and write requests, then dividing the values by periods of graph (20 years in my case).

Now the question arises: should I add up all the values of the OPS are / s each ESXi host that will be connected (and using) the SAN or is there another way to calculate that?

I am calculating the IOPS / s, still using the values of each graph MAX.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

There is some great information on the site about Of Scott Drummonds .

  • Renaming of ESXi hosts to vCloud 5.5 Hosting Manager

    Hello world

I wanted to know if anyone has experienced problems when you rename the hosts ESXi who is restoring the vCloud Director environment?

Our names for the Server naming convention has changed and it is now mandatory to rename all VMware ESXi hosts.

All the information/help will be very appreciated!

    Thank you

United Nations prepare a crowd of vCD, move it cluster at the data center level, then it reboot.  After that, do all your work in renaming (certs, hostname, IP address management, etc.).  Adding this back in is the reverse... put it in the cluster and prepare it to vCD.

  • Do I need an IP NIC of each Esxi host address?  VMs needs access to the storage network?

    Hi all

The issue go, I have a host machine with 3 nic cards - > 1 for production network, 1 for the management network and 1 for the network backup.

The guest PC VM inside will be connected to the 3 network,

But for the host himself, will be used for management and backup only.

Right of Q2) now my host use internal storage. If I'm to migrate to a SAN storage, I have 1 more network for storage.

I understand that the configuration of virtual machines and their data are assigned and stored in the data store that is made visible at the level of the host.

They must for the virtual machines access the data store, join the storage network as well? or they are access to the storage through the host

T1) is the bears from production on the need for level ESXI host having an IP address as well?

A NIC itself does not require an IP address. Which IP addresses are required for VMkernel port groups (for example, networking, vMotion, storage access,...) as well as virtual machines.

Right of Q2) now my host use internal storage. If I'm to migrate to a SAN storage...

No, a virtual machine (i.e. the guest operating system) does not require access to the system of storage, only the ESXi host.

I have a domain on ESXI host controller and I want ESXI to join the AD? I need to create a vmkernel for the goal?

    Hi Welcome to the communities,

It will use the management network, which uses vmk0 as a default, no need to create a new vmkernel.

Then look up what vmnic is connected to vmk0 in your installation.

  • ESXI hosts 5-2 and the best way to configure vSwitch and Nic redundancy

    Hi all

Could someone help me find the best way to configure the vNetwork on 2 5 ESXI host for redundancy.  Once I managed to correctly configure the 2 hosts I will seek to use the same installation process for 6 guests.  3 sites with 2 hosts on each site managed all of vCentre Server

I have 2 DL380 G7 servers 5 ESXI installed on a class 10, 8 GB SD card, I'm looking to install VSA on the 2 hosts on each server with 4 TB of internal storage (8 * 600 GB 10 k SAS).  Each server has a gigabit integrated 4-port NIC and I installed a 2nd NIC gigabit PCIe 4 ports, I also x 2 16 switches of port with Layer 3 routing.  I use vSphere 5 Standard acceleration Kit I am looking to use vCentre server for managing, vMotion for maintenance, HA for the failover and VM 10/15 (vCentre Server Std, DB SQL to vCentre Server, Exchange 2010, SQL Server 2008 R2, IIS Intranet, Helpdesk, 1 DC, 2 Domain Controller, AV Server, WSUS, SCCM Server, and Terminal Server server).

What would be the best way to install and configure the network for performance and redundancy and am I missing something?

    My thoughts are, Teaming: -.

    vCenter - vswitch0 - port1 on NIC1 and port1 on NIC 2 - port1 on NIC1 to physical switch 1 - port1 on NIC2 to physical switch 2

    vMotion - vswitch1 - port2 on NIC1 and port2on NIC 2 - port2 on NIC1 to physical switch 1 - port2 on NIC2 to physical switch 2

    HA - vswitch3 - port3 on NIC1 and port3on NIC 2 - port3 on NIC1 physics 1 - port3 on NIC2 to physical switch 2 switch

    VM - vswitch4 - port4 on NIC1 and port4on NIC 2 - port4 on NIC1 to physical switch 1 - port4 on NIC2 to physical switch 2

or do I need an additional NIC on each server to hit the VM 12-6 VM for 2 ports on 2 NETWORK interface card, or maybe something else I missed?

    Thank you

In your case, to keep it simple and what I can say here is what would be my recommendation:

    3 standard vSwitches

    vSwitch0:

    • Management - vmnic0, vmnic2

    vSwitch1:

    • vMotion - vmnic1, vmnic3

    vSwitch2:

    • VM network - vmnic4, vmnic5, vmnic6, vmnic7

The only reason why that I didn't split the VM in other network adapters shipped is because the difference in the types of the DL380 adapter shipped and the PCIe quad.

  • 6 ESXi hosts can't be added to Vcenter 5.5 App

6 ESXi hosts can't be added to Vcenter 5.5 App

When I add the hosts drop off after 5 min or more.

When you install or upgrade to ESXi hosts to 6.0 you cannot add them to vCenter Server Windows or device.

It's real reason in the upgrade path, you must first upgrade the vCenter before ESXi hosts. See the sequence below:
