  Google was planning to depreciate the NPAPI plugin for quite some time. According to this post chrome Blog: The Final Countdown for NPAPI NPAPI plugins will be disabled by default in April 2015.  This post contains instructions on disabling default plugin for substitution.  If you have the latest version of Chrome (42) it's probably why you don't see it there.   I noticed that I have two versions of Flash installed (16 and 17), even if said NPAPI and ActiveX says. I do both, or can I safely remove Adobe Flash Player NPAPI 16?

  Each major browser has a different plugin architecture, which means that there is a single version of Flash Player for it:

  ActiveX is for Internet Explorer.  NPAPI is for Firefox and other browsers based on NPAPI.  PPAPI is for Google Chrome and other browsers based on chrome.

And Secunia PSI continues to tell me that this version is fully patched and 'up-to-date' on all my systems (XP and Win7). PSI has historically had a day or two to get the current with security updates, but after 10 days, I tend to trust him.

  -Finally, it is my understanding that the latest versions of Flash (Control Panel > Flash console > Advanced tab) allowed to auto-update to the newer versions of the Flash, or at least to indicate a when newer versions were available to install (option I chose). I still get this function runs on any of my systems.

  I missing something here, or is the top a valid rant?

  I tried to install SCCM and by high command line (Administrator) without success.

  Setup commands I tried are:

  • install_flash_player_16.0.0.235_active_x.exe - install - 2
  • install_flash_player_16.0.0.235_active_x.exe - install
  • msiexec /i \\servername\Adobe\Flash\install_flash_player_16_active_x_IE.msi /qn

  All have failed.  I just realized that IE 8.1 Windows comes with an older version of flash.  How to update?

  You need to update with Windows Update. You can also go to: Flash Player issues. Windows 8

  and grabbing the bottom KB, however I had much more luck using Windows update, I have with the single knockout.

  No, it isn't an installer for all types of browser.

  Microsoft integrates Flash Player in Windows 8.x and distributes updates via Windows Update.  If you have Windows configured to download and automatically install the updates you need not do anything.  Otherwise, run Windows Update to install the latest version of Flash Player for Internet Explorer.

  Google has also incorporates Flash Player in Chrome and distributes the updates.  If you have configured to automatically update of Chrome you need not do anything.  Otherwise, look for an update of Chrome to ensure you have the latest version.

  Since you also use Firefox, the only installer you need to manually run the Flash Player for Firefox installer.

  Make sure that you have downloaded the Flash Player right as Firefox uses a different plugin than Internet Explorer (which uses ActiveX).

    • Notice that the link is usually an 'optional' offer for the McAfee toolbar in the middle pane you can untick this box as it is not necessary to use a Flash.

  On Windows 8.x, Microsoft integrates Flash Player in Internet Explorer and updates are published through Internet Explorer updates.  There is no way to uninstall Flash Player for Internet Explorer on Windows 8.x

  Flash Player 15 is out today, and Microsoft has also released their update today.  You can manually check the updates by running Windows Update > Check for Updates rather than wait for Microsoft to tell you an update is available.  This method only updates Flash Player for Internet Explorer.  If you use other browsers (less Google Chrome), you can update the Plugin by navigating to get.adobe.com/flashplayer with this browser.  If you use Google Chrome, Google takes Flash Player in Chrome and publishes updates to update, either through the component update, or an update of Chrome.
