Agent Host Navisphere and vSphere 4

We are about to upgrade our Dell blades to vSphere ESX 4, connected to a network SAN CX3 - 40.  This is a sweet version of each host.

Traditionally, we have installed the Navisphere host on each host Agent - quote: "the host Agent is necessary because it records the HBAs with the SPs to which they are connected and integrates information from the side host such as device names and the volume '. '"

To read a few threads in these forums, I see that it is probably more the case for ESX 4:

http://communities.VMware.com/message/1317011 quote "the Navisphere host Agent is not required vSphere 4.0 (also referred to as ESX 4.0).» With these versions of VMware, the native driver multipathing carries out a 'push' entry to the bottom of all the paths at each start. "With this feature, there are no agent registration or manual of the host"

Also an exchange of views in http://communities.vmware.com/thread/150924

So here's my question that I am struggling to find a definitive answer for... If the host agent is not necessary, why one apparently exists which is compatible with ESX 4?  I miss on functionality by installing do not?  Is a much better, or more supported than the other?

Happy for an answer and or a pointer to the source of the right information!

Thank you, Andrew McKenzie

The host Agent provides the minimum value, and is using the EMC storage Viewer PLugin you would get its value back while not requiring the host agent.

    Hello

I'm busy trying to learn a little more about Auto deploy. I'm trying to figure out what is the best practice when it comes to the part host profiles of the automatic process of deploy. The way I see there are two ways to use host profiles.

    (1) for each host, I create a separate host profile and create necessary deployment rules, one rule per host.

    (2) I create a host profile and only one rule of deployment and then use the response file option to create the unique settings of the host.

I've set up two option, option 2 seems less reliable while option 1 works every time. So my main question is what is the recommended method to use profiles to host with Auto deploy.

    Thank you

    Hello

It is usually done through your supplied option 2.

Create a profile from a host of reference and apply this profile to a host or a cluster.  Usually a cluster or however you define your deployment rules.  Update of the personalization of the host, then remove it from maintenance mode.

  • VSphere hypervisor and Vsphere connecting the same machine

    Hi guys,.

I have a basic question that drunk that I can't seem to find an answer.

I'll put up a test of domestic/vmware server environment, but I only have one computer. I want to install ESXi on this computer, and then run VSphere via localhost to manage computers from the VM on the same host. So far, I've always set up ESXi on a host machine and then managed remotely, with my laptop. But I don't have the option here. Is there something in ESXi that allows this configuration?

    Thank you

    Gareth

You can certainly run a Windows VM on the ESXi host, but you will still need another system to access. ESXi itself does not provide a graphical interface, and I'm not aware of any 3rd third-party tool that adds this feature either.

Default SSL certificates are installed automatically. However, you can configure the third-party SSL certificates to make the environment more secure.

Hello and welcome to the forum of the community of VMware ESXi 5.

Please note that the 'official' language to the English forums.

    1. You want to know if it is possible to use vSphere 5 free on the host computers and manage this host using vCenter (charges apply).
I'm currently not sure and assume that it is not covered in the license agreement for the free vSphere 5.
    2. You also wanted to know if it is possible to drive your without client vSphere vSphere hosts.
Well, on vSphere 5 free, does not allow vMA for "write" for guests. So use withouth of some hacks and cheats sooner or later, you will need to the vSphere Client to manage the guests on your host computer.
If you want to avoid the vSphere on your desktop/laptop client, you could install vSphere client on one of your guests on the vSphere host.
  • Storage vmotion and vsphere 4.1 eval

    Hello

I use vsphere 4.1 (eval version). I have two hosts with shared storage.  I have installed vcenter and the two added hosts.

When I try to storage vmotion, a virtual machine, I find that the "Change host and data store" option is grayed out.

Under the option greyed out is the line "the VM must be power off to change the virtual host machine and data store"

When I look at 'Features licensed' I see "Storage vMotion" is available.

Any ideas why I can't storage vmotion?

    Thank you very much

p.s Someone can tell me are the different versions of vsphere Essentials that is, Standard, Enterprise, Enterprise more etc, in fact different pieces of software or the other a difference of license?

What you have selected is not a Storage vMotion.  If you want to change the data store, you cannot change the host at the same time.  If you change hostm you cannot change the data store at the same time.

    Choose one or the other.

  • Differences - license in VC 2.5 and vsphere

    Hi friends,

Please help to understand the differences between licensing in VC 2.5 and vSphere

-VC 2.5 needs a license server, where as there are keys on vSphere licenses in vSphere

Are all the other differences there? Help, please

With the change of license keys to license server, you are now able to easily run different editions of ESX (i) in your data center. Licenses can be assigned to each host separately.

It is also no longer necessary for licenses based on the temporary host if your server licenses (Virtual Center) has declined and was not available for 14 days (period of grace).

  • MPP change on all of the hosts, adapters, and LUN

    Hello

Is there a way I can change the PSP on my host, HBA and LUN instead of changing each manually in vSphere client?

I have 47 machines, 6 HBAs and 3 hosts per cluster, I hope that I can automate this instead of manually changing each of them.

Also, is it possible to change the defauly used PSP when I add a new LUN?

    -chris

Yes, you want to use esxcli for the to do.

    for example

esxcli nmp device setpolicy --device naa.500000e11053d940 --psp VMW_PSP_RR

You'll want to make a simple loop on all your devices, and then set the psp you want to use

In regards to the PSP by default for all devices, you can accomplish that by using the setdefaultpsp which requires 2 arguments: the psp you want to use and associated with the ATAS.

for example here define us alternate default PSP if you use an array of EMC SYM

esxcli nmp satp setdefaultpsp --psp VMW_PSP_RR --satp VMW_SATP_SYMM

We define in our kickstarts so that any device added from this type of table, you will receive a RR PSP or any other rule that you want to add as a values by default so that you do not need to fix at a peripheral level

  • Move the host / VM and Clusterconfiguration to an another VC

    Hello

    Here's the situation:

I have 2 data centers (physical rooms) in the main Department of the city one and the other a smaller Department in city b. Two data centers have environment VSphere and a VSphere server... now we want to consolidate this... which means I want to turn off the server vsphere small in b City Department. How can I transfer the configuration full vsphere (for example, the cluster hosts and vm) on the server 'big' vsphere in the Department's main city a. city and b are related to transparent LAN...

    Welcome them

Assuming you leave the hosts side B of the B site, you could just create a Cluster in the center of destination data and existing copy of the page by page the cluster configuration.

Once you have done this, you should be able to remove the side hosts B and add them to the new cluster on the a-side.  The VMS should not to b off the power.

  • vCentre with ESX 3.5 and vSphere 4U1 lic.

    Hello

I would like some advice on vCentre4 with ESX3.5 and vSphere 4U1. We currently have 4 ESX3.5 Ent. servers (16CPU lic.) and v2.5U1 vCentre UAT environment, we are trying to replace the migration to vSphere 4U1.

Unfortunately last weekend our vCentre 2.5U1 server crashed without possible repair, and since we are in the process of upgrading would rebuild Win2k8 and SQL2k5 servr to vCentre 4U1 th at the same time, we are going to change servers ESX3.5 to ESXi 4 (free version) and install 4U1 vSphere 4 new production servers.

Our plan is to first upgrade to vSphere 4U1 2 servers, then followed by the other 2 servers a few months later. There are a few things that I need help to clarify:

    1. after reinstallation of vCentre4 licensing to vCentre 4 supports a mixture of ESX3.5 Ent and vSphere.

    2. If I detach my the vCentre ESX3.5 servers and also to remove the lic. of the ESX 3.5 How many days the ESX can run before the ICA. expires - is it being treated as a version of evaluation and the ICA. lasts for 60 days.

3 or if not can I keep my ESX3.5 connected with the vCentre but remove the lic. for the 2 vCentre ESX and how the days can work before the ICA. expires and that our servers cannot connect to the vCentre.

    4. I've heard - we have not installed vCentre4 but the software/module license on vCentre4 (vSphere) is different from what the 2.5 vCentre (ESX3.5) how can keep my lic. on the operation of ESX can I just install the vCentre 2.5 lic. more module on the server of vCentre for lic. vSphere and ESX3.5

    Thank you very much...

    See you soon...

    Thanks for the tips up to what it means if I set up my server with 2 vCentre * vSphere 4U1 server and 2 * ESX3.5 Server;

-the vCentre will allow the vSphere 4U1with lic. key

I'm not sure that understand the issues above.  You need vCenter4 to manage the host ESX (i).  vCenter4 can manage VI3 hosts, but vCenter2.5 can't handle ESX(I) 4 guests.

    -J' I need to install the 2.5U1 software/module license vCentre 2 * ESX3.5

You can install stand-alone if you wish. http://downloads.VMware.com/d/details/esx_35_licenseserver_dt/dGViZGVoKmIqZA==

in order to ensure environments run correctly (without expiring) and they can both connect to vCentre Server?

No, a crowd can be handled by one instance of vCenter.

  • Cluster VI3 and vSphere Cluster (migrate virtual machines)

I have a VI3 and vSphere cluster.  Could I just drag-and - drop my virtual machines to the new Cluster or do I have to upgrade the virtual machines ' hardware of the v4 to v7?

    Thanks in advance

    1. you don't have to upgrade the virtual machine hardware, it is optional.

    2. you do not have to create new cluster, simply upgrade existing by-host. Virtual machines with hardware v4 can be VMotion'ed between 3.5 and 4.0 hosts

  • How to correctly record the ESXi 4.0 and vSphere Client for free?

    Hello everyone.

Can someone help me with registration

of free VMware ESXi 4.0? I am totally confused with the process I

    certainly do not understand.

My goal is to install and use ESXi

4.0 and manage via vSphere client with free licenses free of charge for

more than 60 dayes. Is it possible?

    Installation of its products

gone without problems, but failed to save. I found a few

suggestion on other threads, but nothing helped. Give me a hand please,

    I will be grateful.

    I'll write what I did:

    1. I went to the http://www.vmware.com/products/esxi/ site.

    2. I read that I can get the free license for VMware ESXi 4 and VMware vSphere Client.

    3. Decided to download this software, registered and was redirected to
the site where I could download iso 4 ESXi and vSphere Client .exe

    4. Installation and basic configuration of ESXi on the bare metal and vSphere Client Windows XP without problems.

    5. I am able to create virtual machines and use it - it's OK, but vSphere Client know that I have to the 60-day trial.

    6. Meanwhile I received the email with "Activate your VMware ESXi license".

    7. I have
Click on the link in the e-mail and was redirected to the same
the site, where I can download the software, but on the top of the web page I can
find information and a 'ESXI licenses""this license key is valid.
"for VMware ESXi 3.5 Update 2 and later versions. So I guess it's also valid
      for ESXI 4.0. I'm I right?

    8. I would like to record my ESXi 4 software installed and the vSphere Client. Of
      I chose the vSphere Client Menu: help - & gt; VMware on the web - & gt;
Sign up for now. The site ask me "series/license number Activation".
Code"so I typed the license key. Iassume that this license key should not be placed here, because the web site of replay that: "Code of Activation of series/license number has already been registered. So how do?

As I wrote, I'm confused. How to correctly record the ESXi 4.0 and vSphere Client? What I did wrong and how to fix?

To register the serial number in your ESX4i host

Home-> inventory-> higher level (your ESXi host)

    Tab Configuration

    Left side - features licensed

Edit-> Assign new key for this host-> Enter Key

    Paste your key

    Confirm all

Your ESXi server is now fully licensed

Note: you no longer have the basic features and all the enterprise features that came with a trial license are no longer valid
