vCentre with ESX 3.5 and vSphere 4U1 lic.

Hello

I would like some advice on vCentre4 with ESX3.5 and vSphere 4U1. We currently have 4 ESX3.5 Ent. servers (16CPU lic.) and v2.5U1 vCentre UAT environment, we are trying to replace the migration to vSphere 4U1.

Unfortunately last weekend our vCentre 2.5U1 server crashed without possible repair, and since we are in the process of upgrading would rebuild Win2k8 and SQL2k5 servr to vCentre 4U1 th at the same time, we are going to change servers ESX3.5 to ESXi 4 (free version) and install 4U1 vSphere 4 new production servers.

Our plan is to first upgrade to vSphere 4U1 2 servers, then followed by the other 2 servers a few months later. There are a few things that I need help to clarify:

1. after reinstallation of vCentre4 licensing to vCentre 4 supports a mixture of ESX3.5 Ent and vSphere.

2. If I detach my the vCentre ESX3.5 servers and also to remove the lic. of the ESX 3.5 How many days the ESX can run before the ICA. expires - is it being treated as a version of evaluation and the ICA. lasts for 60 days.

3 or if not can I keep my ESX3.5 connected with the vCentre but remove the lic. for the 2 vCentre ESX and how the days can work before the ICA. expires and that our servers cannot connect to the vCentre.

4. I've heard - we have not installed vCentre4 but the software/module license on vCentre4 (vSphere) is different from what the 2.5 vCentre (ESX3.5) how can keep my lic. on the operation of ESX can I just install the vCentre 2.5 lic. more module on the server of vCentre for lic. vSphere and ESX3.5

Thank you very much...

See you soon...

Thanks for the tips up to what it means if I set up my server with 2 vCentre * vSphere 4U1 server and 2 * ESX3.5 Server;

-the vCentre will allow the vSphere 4U1with lic. key

I'm not sure that understand the issues above.  You need vCenter4 to manage the host ESX (i).  vCenter4 can manage VI3 hosts, but vCenter2.5 can't handle ESX(I) 4 guests.

-J' I need to install the 2.5U1 software/module license vCentre 2 * ESX3.5

You can install stand-alone if you wish. http://downloads.VMware.com/d/details/esx_35_licenseserver_dt/dGViZGVoKmIqZA==

in order to ensure environments run correctly (without expiring) and they can both connect to vCentre Server?

No, a crowd can be handled by one instance of vCenter.

  • ESX 3.5 and vSphere Compatability

    Hi all

I am running a small farm of ESX 3.5 with a VC servers single version 2.5.

I am about to buy two new servers to create a x 64 virtualized environment because none of my old servers are capable of running a 64-bit o/s x and will not be appropriate to upgrade to vsphere.

Basically, I would like to know if anyone has any input / issues running vSphere 4.0 and ESX3.5 side by side in different groups, but the two environments managed from within the same VC?

Any help or architecture ideas would be welcome.

    Thank you

vCenter 4.0 is capable of managing servers ESX 4 and ESX3.5 together in the same and separate clusters. There are some restrictions as ESX 3.5 is not able to run VM Harware Version 7, etc.

  • Move VMS between server ESXi and vSphere ESX server

    Dear all,

I want to move some a vSphere ESX server virtual machines to ESXi server.

I understand that some users will use CPS to move between the ESX servers, but apparently not for moving between different products.

I'm just using a slow and prone to error method:

The files of the virtual machine to my deskop PC of vSphere ESX server and then upload to the ESXi server.

I would advise you to please all of the methods that is better than this one?

    Help, please.

    Kind regards

    Tommy

If you got a central storage you can move virtual machines between the two products with vMotion. Since you don't seem to have available vMotion, you pouvez use scp. SCP has nothing to do with ESX/ESXi products. It is a Linux/Unix program which is available in both servers.

So with the CPS, you need a little less.

    The syntax is like:

    SCP - r/path/to/vm/directory user@esxi:/path/to/new/location

My client wants to spend his whole army ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1 host. I know that it requires a clean install of the host. But vMotion always works in a cluster with a mix of the host ESX 4.0 and ESXi 4.1?

You will be fine to have a mixed group of ESX and ESXi hosts.

  • Move cluster configured with replication SRM and Vsphere

    All,

We go 2 groups in the near future to achieve a geographical distance between the 2 sites.

A cluster is equipped with VMware 5.0 replication SRM and vSphere and the other cluster running VMware 5.5 and SRM in combination with replication of vSphere.

What is the best way to move these clusters, I must stop the replication or interrupt the replication process and are these action to perform on SRM or we need to perform any action on the virtual machine itself?

I read that a stop is setting the State to not configured including destroy all files in the target directory.

Does anyone have an experience by physically moving a cluster managed by SRM (and replication of vSphere)

  • ISCSI performance with HP DL160 G6 and ESX 4.0

I feel iSCSI performance with HP DL160 G6 and ESX 4.0 servers and would like to help with this.

I have Setup iSCSI on 3 * ESX 4.0 host.

Each have a corresponding single target and a single LUN on the SAN. The LUNS are formatted as fmfs3 types.

Each host is connected to the QNAP San in the same way via a Gigabit switch.

All NICs operate at 1 GB.

To test the performance I use vmkfstools to clone a drive from the local store to the LUN

On the first host (a DL140 G3) performance is good to 48 MB/s.

On the 2 DL160 performance is very poor and barely reach 2 Mbps

During cloning, DL160 servers save also on several occasions by the following in/var/log/wmkwarning:
Vmkernel servername: 0:05:23:53.214 cpu2:4308) WARNING: NMP: nmp_DeviceRetryCommand: device 'naa.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx': waiting for updated status of fast path for blocked with e/s failover. No prior reservation is on the device.

I made sure the servers are up-to-date:
    DL160 G6 Configuration:
    ESX 4.0.0 build-702116
    2 * NIC HP NC362i GB (firmware 1.7.2, driver 1.3.19.12.1)
    1 * smart Array P212 controller (firmware 5.14)

    The SAN server configuration:
    QNAP Ts-459u-rp (firmware Build 0302 T 3.6.1)

I looked everywhere for an answer.
I also tried the "esxcfg-advcfg - s 1/VMFS3/FailVolumeOpenIfAPD" as suggested on some positions.
    All to nothing does not.

Any help / advice would be appreciated!

  • Cluster with ESX 3 and HA

If I have a Cluster with ESX 3 and if one of them, I want to know the process of HA, on which ESX my VM would be transferred.

    We do not have DRS

I'm looking in config HA, and I don't see the configuration option.

    Thank you

.. My VM would be transferred on which ESX?

On others, depending on the resources available to them.

All I know is there nothing HA settings, where you can specify this. You could set up - which IMO would not have made much sense - the affinity of host for each virtual computer work only on two hosts. You could also spend a host as a failover host.

I suggest that read you http://www.yellow-bricks.com/vmware-high-availability-deepdiv/ for more information on HA.

  • vSphere 4 perl SDK with ESX 3.5?

I start a project with the ESX 3.5, although we can upgrade to vsphere in a near future. Is it safe to use perl vsphere SDK with ESX 3.5 for now, or I'm better with the 1.6 VIPerl sdk until I can upgrade to vsphere 4?

  • hyperthreading (HT) in vSphere with Nehalem Xeon 5500 and their effect on the number of vCPU

    Hi guys

The title says it all I think. HT is enabled on the new Xeon 5500, what effect does exactly in vSphere:

    (1) are there more vCPUs per socket? (E.g., 4 cores * 2 threads = 8 vCPUs presentable). or;

    (2) no County vCPU remains, with processes to become potentially more effective due to the additional thread, and;

    (3) are there applications or use cases for which hyperthreading is not recommended?

Someone at - it with the 5500 new gear and vSphere had the chance to test HT in their lab to their workloads?

a core or ht cpu is not called a vCPU. a vCPU is simply a virtual CPU that is part of a virtual machine configuration. Now HT would be double the amount of options the Planner must schedule vCPUs. From what I heard HT and the performance has been improved majorly with vSphere and he recommended to keep active.

No it won't effect on licensing, it is taking physical and physical basis.

I expect soon a few details/new performance data from VMware implementation team!

If you upgrade the server vcenter to 5 you must ensure that your esx are 3.5 U5, lower than the version of esx 3.5 u5 only is not supported with vcenter 5.
