  • ESXi 100% free which on the VMAs and vCLI?

I use ESXi with a free license and I'm trying to figure out what I can do with this hypervisor. I was looking for my prospective VM backup solutions and I came across two scripts William Lam, ghettoVCB (http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760) and ghettoVCBg2 (http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-9843).

It seems that I can exclude ghettoVCBg2 immediately because it takes vMA which will not work with the free license. I'm not sure how ghettoVCB works (I know that I need to enable SSH which is unsupported) if I can't use CLI with the free license.

Basically, is - can anyone clarify what I can do with ESXi and free license? The vMA and vCLI are unnecessary with this license?

  • VM on esxi 5 free auto turn off?

Hello - I installed esxi 5 free on a home server that I use currently.  I currently have 2 vm installed on this host and VMS seem to close within one hour when I disconnect the vsphere client.  I tried to look through the parameters of power, etc. in vsphere, but did not find anything.

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the community,

What guest operating system are you running? In the case of Windows, it's a genuine Windows? In case of problems of licences or activation Windows may stop after 1 or 2 hours.

If the above can be rejected, please join the latest vmware.log two files to know what can cause the VM to stop.

No have you configured the VMs to turn on automatically with the host?

  • Limitation of vCPU ESXi 5 free

    Hello

Can't find the answer to this request, but could not find answers for 30 minutes Googling.

What is the vCPU max that I can attribute to a virtual machine on esxi 5 free version?

    Thank you

8 vCPUs can be assigned to a virtual computer by using the free version.

  • Benefits of ESXi for free on ESXi 4.1 free U2 U1 5.0?

I will be upgrading my box ESXi soon to a C2D 2.8 Ghz with 8 GB of RAM for a Phenom II x 4 965 with 16 GB RAM.

I wonder if there is any advantage to go to 5.0 U1 on version 4.1 of U2 that I'm currently using (?) I just import .vmx and hard files from a backup to the new construction. I'll never need a volume of more than 2 TB is a lab at home environment, so he will never have to be upgraded to a paid version. The MB supports a maximum of 32 GB limitation of the memory of ESXi 5.0 free is not a matter of concern.

    So, I didn't win?

I would like to look at these links:

    http://www.VMware.com/support/vsphere5/doc/vSphere-ESX-vCenter-Server-50-new-features.html

But for the version free USB 3and other new features in the virtual machine will probably be of interest to you.

Other features that might be relevant:

    Host support booting UEFI

    VMFS5

    Hope this helps?

  • ESXi is free?

I downloaded ESXi, they give me a license key and the site says that it's free. But during the installation it says is the evaluation version in the menu option view information support within the console. I couldn't find an options menu where to enter the license key, that I don't have, found a few options in the console to change, like root password network, newspapers etc.

Still one thing, connecting to ESXi vSphere Client, the client says I the evaluation version, 60 days left to buy a license.

    Free ESXi or not?

Yes, it's free. When you register for the download, you would have received a confirmation email with a link to pick up your key.  The key will define the product ' expire '.

To install the key, go to the tab Configuration - features licensed

  • Looking for advice on my lab with ESXi 5 free

    Hi all

I would like to know if I need a license to just virtualize machines in my scenario.

    My goals:

    • All virtualized Machines, I will not use virtualization features, I want just the availability virtualize my machines, I don't care management or vmotion. I know that in a production environment is not a good practice, but like I said, I just want a maximum of my machines.

Here I show my laboratory structure:

    Servers:

    • I have 2 servers with the following configuration:
      • Intel Xeon 2630 V2
      • Motherboard S2600CP2
      • 64 GB OF RAM
      • 4 1 TB HDs
      • 1 SSD 240 GB HD
      • 2 10/100/1000 integrated network in the motherboard cards
    • I have 1 server with the following configuration:
      • Intel Xeon 1356 - E5 07v2V2 24
      • Card mother Intel S2400SC2
      • 64 GB OF RAM
      • HD 1 TB
      • 2 10/100/1000 integrated network in the motherboard cards

    Switches

All the switches used will be of Juniper Networks

    • Thorns:
      • following 2 switches with port configuration:
        • 24 ports QSFP +.
    • Leafs
      • 3 following switches with port configuration:
        • 48 SFP / SFP ports +.
        • 2 uplinks QSFP + to connect on thorns switches

You can see a summary of my lab demonstration at the laboratory of attached file '. '. PNG ".

    My doubts:

WARNING: This is not legal advise and you're not my client. My TAM has confirmed that you can use unlimited ESXi licenses for your current setup without any problems. Please login to the portal of VMware and ask your ESXi unlimited licenses. Don't forget that you will need licenses paid if in the future you decide to deploy vCenter to manage these hosts and use of advanced features such as HA, vMotion. Feel free to ask more questions.

  • VSphere ESXi hypervisor free, re-usable clon server tests?

    Hello

I tested VMWare vSphere, ESXi Hypervisor, the free program.

I try to get tips motherboard I should buy to test the vSphere Hypervisor?

I tested some form of Intel and Asus motherboard and Boot CD saysit cannot detect the network card. But in a Dell 2950 PowerEdge, it works very well.

Another thing is that I read that in a motheboard with only SATA2 ports, the data store is detected as 'rare' and not 'local', so my final question is if vSphere is recommended only from servers brand or certification or if this could work in a re-usable/clon/DYI Server?

    Thank you very much

    Oliver

Although the ESXi Hypervisor can run on office equipment - often only when equipped with an additional supported NIC - it's officially supported only on the server hardware that can be found in the VMware Compatibility Guide

  • Cannot add esxi 5 free license for eval installation

    Hello world

I have an ESXi 5 installation with 2 VMS running in eval mode. 21 days ago, and I'm adding to my free license. It accepts it, and then after about 15 seconds back in fashion eval. The key is directly from my portal of licenses when I registered for the eval and the "characteristics under license" section shows it installed correctly, at least for those 15 seconds.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you

    Matt

    Welcome to the community,

Activate/try all the advanced features (e.g. enable vMotion on a group of ports VMKernel, 8vCPUs assigned to a virtual machine,...)? In this case, you may need to remove the features/parameters that are not included in the free version before that you can combine the license key.

  • ESXi Hypervisor free + HP P4500 (former lefthand)

    Hi all

for a customer, we have the plan of establishing an environment of small size with VM (2 x HP DL360 host machines) with storage behind it (60 to on a 5 HP P4500 node.)

I have a question, that's probably easy to find, but I'm not able to get the right answer. The free ESXi supports iSCSI connections, we can store the virtual machine in a data store created on the P4500?

At the time, this client will probably get a licensed version of VMWare vCenter Server and HA, possibly the license of the company for FT, but now, they want to test without a license (so not a 60 day trial Enterprise license)

    Thanks in advance

    Kind regards

    Hi Kay,

There is no limit on the connectivity iSCSI on the free version of ESXi.

  • VCenter Server (standard) useful with ESXi is free?

Trying to decide what, if anything, to actually buy VMware.  The free ESXi product license is... enough.  I would really like to central management, backup or read/write capabilities with rcli (piracy without installation - I think I said that correctly).

My question is this.  There is a VERY big jump in $$$ of the products beforehand essentials range or better (I think that the Standard line is unnecessary).  I currently have 5 VMware servers (2 under Server Linux 2.0 on server newish hardware, each, 2 ESXi 4 server about 4 VM running on old jobs as each House a unique VM (due to higher disk IO) and ESXi 3.5 server running on 32-bit with 1 VM hardware).

In any case - with a mixture of mission critical production VM and VM little criticism that don't necessary not to live on a San and puff SAN bandwidth, I'm not sure I want to limit myself to 3 physical machines.  It would be probably enough for the next 5 to 10 years, but it would affect my SAN strategies and I have to buy at least 1 or 2 new costly servers.

So I thought that maybe just get the vCenter Server for centralized management would work.  I always have 2 or 3 more enjoyable new servers ESXi 4 on the San with mission critical servers, while continuing to have 2-3 of older machines with individual local readers VM (I like to keep virtual for purposes of disaster recovery for) running.

I can't find any information on knowledge if it would work, and it would offer benefits etc..

You cannot add free ESXi to vCenter. Adding a host requires the inside the host vCenter Agent license.

    Sorry about that.

  • ESXi 4 free upgrade to 2 CPU

    Hi all

    I have a Dell T610 with 1 processor Xeon 5506 and 12 GB (6x2GB) RAM

I am looking to upgrade my RAM and instead of exchanging all the RAM on and to 3x8GB it would be less expensive to add another CPU and get 6x4Go of RAM.

The console of vSphere license information indicates the following:

Product: ESXi 4 Server unique registered for 1 physical CPU (1-6 cores per processor)

    License key: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

    Expires: never

    Product features:

Up to 256 GB of memory

    Up to 4-way virtual SMP

As you can see, it is said that it is allowed for 1 physical CPU, but what happens if I add another CPU?

I can live with having only 4vCPU by VM, even if I have 8 cores, but that work?

ESXi will use all my 8 cores?

I'm interested in staying with the free version for now.

    Thank you

    Idan.

Yes, just plug.  In the free version which is just a field of view for how many processors are physically installed.

As you note, vSMP will remain at 4 vCPU per guest, however using more than 2 vCPU on one single guest is not recommended in most situations anyway.

Please give points for any helpful answer.
