all programs changed to .lnk files
I am running xp sp3. something has changed all my program files for the extension .lnk files. I ran the exe and lnk patches, but programs are always formatted .lnk. When I try to re - load the program (ex: iTunes) it appears as iTunes.lnk in the start menu. I ran two different virus scans, having found nothing. Help, please. I need my dos programs.
Well, I came across the solution. Something had removed my (?) application EXE file. I went to my computer, click Tools > folder options > file types. EXE was not in the list of registered file types. I added EXE as 'new', click on 'Advanced' and check 'application' on the associated file type. THAT FIXED! All my desktop icons and all the files in the toolbar to start "all programs" are back to normal.

Original title: I'm unable to open programs in my Start Menu.
When I click on an item in the beginning, all programs selection and click it, instead of opening, I get the name of the program, for example Microsoft Works... LNK and that's all I get the program never opens. I think somehow that the files have been changed to .lnk files but do not know how it happened
This happened for several months and I'm sure that there is an easy solution to return to what it was but don't know what. I tried the system restore, but that did nothing and don't know what to do next. Any ideas? Thank you... betseyd112

Shortcuts were all changed to .lnk files.
Shortcuts were all changed to .lnk files. All point to the same prog (IrfanView).
Applies to all the shortcuts through the PC, including those in Control Panel of Windows startup.
Create a new shortcut with the right target still support IrfanView.
I need to restore my shortcuts to point to their original targets.
Following the questions of other users did not help.
Edition of the file association for .lnk files makes all point to the same target.
It seems to be a lot of tips for Vista, but not for 7.
Just extract the first file reg on the desktop IE http://www.winhelponline.com/fileasso/lnkfix_vista.zip
Then do this
Click Start, and then run...
Type regedit and press OK
In regedit, click on file and then import it
Locate the ".reg" file you just extract, and then press OK
The content of this ".reg" file will be listed in the register.
You can do the same thing for the second .reg file so that it opens in Notepad again.

All my icons are LNK files please help I am panic
Basically, I recommended windows open a folder with a lnk file but when I made all my icons have been transformed into office lnk files and I couldn't open any of them please help I tried in safe mode, but the files are still the same
This file association is more easily solved by using the system restore to roll back in time to before the beginning of the question. There are some registry changes to correct, but I highly recommend the system restore instead. You can open it by searching the restore in your Start menu.
If it was useful, you can vote by clicking on the green triangle. If it solves the problem, click on propose as answer. Thank you!

How to restore the program that opens the lnk files to DEFAULT
I just upgraded to windows 7
While trying to change a lnk file, my child was able to put all the application & lnk files on my pc to open with Explorer (the file in the windows directory)
Now, when it is switched on the pc opens explore again and again until it locks upward. I can't open any programs, safe mode dose not help. I can right click on the files, but can't seem to change the default program option because it is grayed out. Can you help me to put this.Click on the Start Menu, type regedit in start search and press ENTER.
Navigate to the following registry branch:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk
Click the arrow to expand and delete the subkey named UserChoice.
Exit the registry editor.Reset

Hello
Question 1 - I have a list of duplicate on my computer files. Very often, the same file appears in two or more different locations. So I guess this could mean different copies of the same file is used by various programs. It would then be important to know what program is using this file prior to the removal of duplicates.
Question 2 - it would be possible to point all programs that use a file given in one place? That is to centralize the location of a file. What I think, could eliminate the need to have different copies at different locations. If so, how is it please?
Thank you for your help.
The duplication that you see is the result of a bad installation program written by eSupport. It has nothing to do with Microsoft. I could do this:
- Rename the folder c:\eSupport in eSupport.junk
- Wait a week or two.
- If all goes well, remove the renamed folder.

Cleaning of all programs on the start menu
I'm going from XP to 7. In the start menu > all programs listing all downloaded programs is listed. Under XP I could go to "documents and settings", create folders and put the files listed in all programs into separate folders. It resulted in very few files containing the downloaded files. For example, I got the files listed as 'Business', 'Security', 'Internet' etc. How to do this in 7 so that my ALL PROGRAMS list is first files and downloaded programs. I hope I have made myself clear... Thank you
There are two places where the start menu programs .
For a particular user where where programs installed to be used by this user look in:
C:\Users\
\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs For all users look in:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start start\program
NOTE: AppData and ProgramData are hidden files.

When the problem persisted for 3-4 days, I thought to check the properties of the file "", & that's when I learned that even though she describes the file type as 'application', she has a ".lnk" extension I deleted the shortcut & set it to new, but who has not resolve it. I ran "anti-virus", & he found.
Whenever I click any shortcut on the desktop, it asks me what program should be used to open it. Yesterday, I clicked on 'Internet Explorer' & changed the option "open with...". "for IE. By mistake, I uncheck the box 'always apply for this type of files', at the bottom of this window. So now, each item on the desk trying to open with IE.
All I want to do is retrieve these files & extensions associations. How can this be achieved? Any help? Apart from this, the laptop works well as before. Thanks in advance.

All my programs has changed to one. LNK file when I tried to use open with an old paint of the folder, what do I do to get my office and all running programs corectlly? P.S. I have a group policy that blocks almost everything so there needs to be a simple solution that doesn't invole running of any application.exe because all the easy fixes are blocked by my admin that involve changes to the computer. The best way to resolve this would be to do a system restore to the day before, he got past, but which is also blocked. Help!

Help: Program changed by default for Internet Explorer, the .lnk files.
So yesterday, I did something stupid. I managed to change the default program for all my .lnk for Internet Explorer files. I am running Win 7 (64).
When I double-click on any file on my desktop, it tries to open the file with Internet Explorer. It is the same for most of the program files in my Start menu. I met some difficulties for this problem, but all were for the latest operating systems such as Vista and XP so I didn't run the risk of ruining my registry even more by running an obsolete program. If more information is needed just ask.
Help ASAP would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance people.

In Windows 7. LNK file associations changed
All the desktop shortcut icons and icons of programs start on a new Windows 7machine have had their file association has changed all that was the default association to another program, IE. IE Explorer, so that none of the links will launch the program proper. Change the open with everything a link to any other program causes all links to implement the selected program. Therefore, nothing works. Is there a file association by default for *. LNK files and if so the power can file association be changed back to the default value of correct Windows? The system has Norton antivirus running and up to date so no indication of a problem of viruses, and even if the user is not sure, reminds in response a request 'open with' when starting a game. All other configuration settings seem to agree. Any suggestions?
IS - THIS only simple allows you to delete the association
SIMPLY CLICK remove .lnk file association AND THATS IT
