Alternative virtual disks Split VDP of data warehouses

Whwn I used VMWare Data Recovery, I used a NAS data store to store my backups while having the appliance of current backup to run on my main data store that contains all my virtual machines.  Is it possible to do it with POS?  I see that the camera comes already with the backup already created virtual disks.  I thought about removing them from the virtual machine, moving them to another data store and then add them to the virtual machine.  The VDP 2 TB appiance has about 12 virtual disks (not counting the OS disk).  It would be tedious to each virtual disk backup to another data store.  Is there a best procddure to achieve this?  Should I still do it at all?  I'm stepping outside the boundaries of how this device is supposed to work?

I would like some advice in this way.

In this case I would deploy the WTP unit on the main and storage data store then migrate the data (2,3 & 4) to store NAS data disks.

«WARNING: NFS performance statistics are not available (to come in a future version of vSphere).»

When these statistics are available for NFS data storage?

    Kind regards

    marc0

The answer is in the property of instance data that Get-Stat returns.

    (1) get-Stat ==> canonical name of the LUN on which disk the hard

    (2) get-Stat virtualdisk ==> The SCSI id of the virtual disk inside the VM

    (3) get-Stat data store ==> the name of the data store

    (1) you give statistics for view virtual machine i/o activity starting from the LUN. For a VM with several virtual disks on the same data store, this will display the total IO statistics. And it will also include i/o generated by another VM on the LUN as swap, Flash files related...

    (2) gives statistics for 1 specific virtual disk of your virtual machine

    (3) statistics of e/s of your VM to a specific data store. Interesting when you have a store of data with multiple extensions (multiple LUNS)

I hope that clarifies it a bit.

  • Deleted virtual disk file and data store, just want to boot OS now.

So I had a VM win7, and I added a virtual disk on a new data store.

The new drive came out fine on windows as a new drive, and I was able to format etc.

Now I basically unplugged all the system and booted Linux instead of ESX and ran all over the disk on which was my data store.

  • Clone VM runs on several data warehouses

    Hi all

I have a virtual machine that spans 2 data warehouses and I don't know how it happened like this:

I cloned a VM from a template.  The model is in my store of data VOL3.

In the summary for my VM tab, it shows that it is connected to and VOL2 VOL3 data warehouses.  When I sail both VOL2 VOL3 data warehouses, I see all the files associated with the virtual machine on VOL3, so I do not know why the VIC is reported as connected to VOL3?  It has only 1 drive, and who connects to a single vmdk on VOL2

Some notes when I cloned the virtual machine template, I forgot that I had the CD connected to a .iso on the VOL3, maybe that's the question?  I unplugged the virtualCD, but no change?  It doesn't seem to be hurt anything at the moment, but I guess it could complicate things on the road.

    Thank you

    Chad

I think that the reason that you see your vm split into several data stores is the .iso file, presented during the configuration of the virtual machine. Instead of unplugging the drive (which has the .iso file) change the cd configuration to use a client device.

    I hope this helps.

  • Re-create a virtual disk (RAID 1) of two existing drives

After several power outages, my server Dell PowerEdge T110 ii starts plu. The virtual disk (RAID 1) has disappeared, but the two physical disks are still visible and a State of readiness.

Is it possible to create a virtual disk Raid1 of two existing disk which was composed the original virtual disk without losing any data?

If this is not possible, is there a way to recover the data (image) and re - create a new virtual disk?

I hope someone can help me.

I don't think, because the process would have initialized the disc, which formats.

  • MD1220 disk expansion & expansion / resize virtual disk

I seek to add 6 new MD1220 to a current configuration of 6 who are chained together.  Two quick questions on this...

    (1) is there as a limit to how many MD1220 can be connected?

    (2) once the virtual disks were created in all of my original 6 devices, is it possible to resize or add to this Setup?  Or I should blow away and recreate?

    Thank you
    Greg

    Hello Greg,.

    (1) is there as a limit to how many MD1220 can be connected?  You can put a maximum of 4 cases with the MD1220 can be chained together (which gives a total of 96 disks per SAS port).

    (2) once the virtual disks were created in all of my original 6 devices, is it possible to resize or add to this Setup?  Or I should blow away and recreate? You can add disks to your virtual drive and can increase the size, but depending on how much space you add that it can be faster to back up data and then recreate the virtual disk and restore your data.  A virtual disk expansion is really slow and it may take weeks or even months depending on the size of the virtual disk.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • How to see 5 pools do not VM disks on data warehouses?

Hello.  I am new to view.  I just started a new job where they have a 5 view with more than 1,000 Linked Clone VM VDI environment.

There are warehouses of data 3fc which each have about 400 GB of free space by showing in the view tab in vCenter server administrator.  Asked me to create a new pool with 15 virtual machines.  Each VM will require about 35 GB of total disk space (disposable, internal, swap disk and vm).  Therefore, approximately 525 GB of disk space for the virtual machines.

I know that the amount of disk space required for the virtual machines is too big to fit on one of the data stores.  See split sort virtual machines in three warehouses of data?  If so, how composer decides what data stores to put the virtual disks of each virtual computer on?

    Thanks for your help!

It has to work this way, you have selected all three data warehouses when you configure the pool.   If this isn't the case, you will need to go back and change the settings of the pool to include data warehouses before starting commissioning.

  • I have a virtual machine that is resident on two data warehouses, and I need to move

Okay, I'm trying to reconfigure the storage on a cluster of ESXi to software development, and I fell on a virtual machine that is resident on two data warehouses.  Somehow, the user has configured this thing to have most of the VM files on the data store 5 while all the vmdk but the residence on the data store 1 boot drive.  He probably did it because of the size of the old warehouses of data and the many VMs older than his colleagues left sitting.  Well, now I just reconfigure data warehouses so that there is more usable space, but I can't move this machine a virtual so that I can reconfigure the rest of storage.  (For reference, the old warehouses of data have been implemented in 4 sets of three disks in RAID 3 and a set of four disks in RAID 3 with two drives hot spare.)  For the record: not my idea.  I am reconfiguring them now to be a set of 15 drives in RAID 6, divided into two LUNS on both controllers, with a hot spare.)

Well, now I need to figure out how to get this VM is spent at one of new data stores.  The data migration store feature does not work.  Any recommendations?

    Hi Dangingerich,

You can move the VMDK individually with the advanced functionality of storage vMotion allows you to ask the data disk on your new storage space and then have the OS disk track.

  • Need a script to list all virtual machines on specific data warehouses

I am trying to find a way to list all virtual computers on specific data warehouses. I use vSphere 5.1 and so far I got this:

    Get-Datastore. where {$_ .name - like ' * XXX * ""} | Get - VM | Select name, @{N = "Datastore"; {E = {Get-Datastore - VM $_}} | Sort name | FT - one

This kind of work, but it would be perfect if I got this:

  • Dell virtual disk are larger. You want to increase the size of the data store.

    Hello

I started the implementation of a server ESXi 5.5 Update 1 this week. I didn't know Dell shipped the server with two virtual disks instead of one. I realized this _apres_ that I had already created the data store and setup a few virtual machines to the breast. I called Dell who sent specific instructions to increase the removal of the second (empty) virtual disk and add it to the main. In the end, I increased the single VD from 2 TB to 3 TB and I want to give the remaining space in my store of data.

I tried to follow the article here that explains how to do this via the CLI.

Well, he did not altogether. Fortunately, I was able to recover my datastore my setting start and end sectors to their original numbers. But I'm still left with this almost 1 TB of space that I can not attribute to the data store. After that I reread storage adapters in the client, the new Dell disk size resulted under measurement devices. Click on "increase...". ", generates the following error which led me on the way to the CLI method:

Call "HostDatastoreSystem.QueryAvailableDisksForVmfs" to object "ha-datastoresystem" on ESXi '[myservername]' failed.

I will paste my notes that I took everything by jobs. Things have exploded the rails when I put 4 partition size to the largest size. Any help, please?

    Update:

Since it was such a new machine, not in active production, we have safeguarded the VMs management off the ESXi host. Then flattened the virtual disk, recreated, and then created a store of data with the right size. (TPG this time, naturally.) We put the management of virtual machines on the data store. For Windows virtual machines, we have restored the using AppAssure. Everything is ok now.

Need to add a new item to the list of punch: check what Dell has done the configuration of the virtual disks. :-)

    Hello

Attached is the script that I used to create virtual machines and it works very well when virtual machines are created to warehouses of unique data, but do not have clustered data warehouses. I think that the reason is that it creates the virtual machine through the esx host (who does not know the cluter) and not via vCenter (who knows about it). Unfortunately I do not know how to fix.

    If ($datastore1 - only 'none') {}

  • Script to the list of virtual machines with their VMDK on warehouses of data with their LUN ID.

Hey gang - I have one here, I wonder if anyone has some ideas...

Our storage team is looking for a report that can be generated to display each VM, each VMDK for this virtual machine and the data store on the VMDK is the canonical name of the data store - and throw in a delimited file of semicolon for their own transformation...

I have thousands of VMS over hundreds of hosts and data warehouses and also have a handful of RDM. so, I'm looking for the most effective way to go about it.

    Should look like this:

VMName; VMDKName, the data store; MONDAY

    somevm; somevm.vmdk; DATASTORE1; NAA.60050723145982asd29823blahblah1

    somevm; somevm_1.vmdk; DATASTORE2; NAA.60050723145982asd29823blahblah2

    Any ideas?

The following PowerCLI script will give you the report requested on the virtual machines and their VMDK files. It also takes account of the fact that a data store can have several extensions:

    Get-VM |
    Get-HardDisk |
    Select-Object -Property @{N="VM";E={$_.Parent}},
    @{N="VMDK";E={$_.FileName.Split('/')[1]}},
    @{N="Datastore";E={$_.FileName.Split(']')[0].TrimStart('[')}},
    @{N="LunID";E={[string]::Join(',',((Get-Datastore $_.FileName.Split(']')[0].TrimStart('[')).Extensiondata.Info.Vmfs.Extent |
      Select-Object -ExpandProperty DiskName))}}

  • 7 virtual disk added vSphere data protection

Hi, we are deploying vSphere Protection of data in the model of the FVO, after completion, we found 7 virtual disk listed in the properties of the vm disk of 1x100GB and 6x256GB of the disc, we could just understand why the model gave us 7 disc, a google search didn't really give us any idea either.

Few can have space constraints. This is for flexibility.

Other than 1, the disks are disks of data and you have the possibility to migrate to different data warehouses after deployment.

  • List of virtual machines in data warehouses

    Hi all

I want to list all virtual machines in warehouses of data starting with "MDF".  I tried

    Get - VM - Datastore (Get-Datastore-name MDF *) | Select-object - property name, data store > VMplusdatastore.txt

But it does not list the names of data store for a reason any?

Also some VM will have records on more than a logic unit number - I suppose that it is not translated here?

Wouldn't be better to do the opposite?

    Hi Simon,.

the problem with your script is that the virtual computer object does not have a property data store. That is why the data column store is empty in the output. The following script will combine virtual machine names and the data store for all with names beginning with MDF data warehouses:

    Get-Datastore -Name MDF* | ForEach-Object {
      $Datastore = $_
      $Datastore | Get-VM | ForEach-Object {
        $Report = "" | Select-Object -property Name, Datastore
        $Report.Name = $_.Name
        $Report.Datastore = $Datastore.name
        $Report
      }
    } > VMplusdatastore.txt

If a virtual machine disks on multiple data stores, it will display all the combinations.

    Best regards, Robert

  • VM with disks of different data warehouses. Snapshots on the same data store?

    Hello

We have several virtual machines with disks on different data stores for reasons RAID.

Last night, we found that the snapshots of all disks are left on the data store main vmx and not on each datastore disk.

How will we change this as our OS data warehouses are small and run out of space when running shadow copies?

    Thank you

    Frogbeef

You can change the location of snapshots, but they will all go to this place - as far as I know, you cannot change the location of each disk.

The KB http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1002929 explains how to do this.
