ASM and mirroring

DB version: 11.2
Version of the operating system: Solaris 5.10

System administrators have provided us with a disk array with a total capacity of 700 GB for shared storage. I created two slices of 1 GB for disc OCR and VOTE.

Now, I find myself with 698 GB I would use to create a group of disks for data files. Using
format
command I can create several tranches from there or I could simply create a slice of 698 GB. Should which option I choose?

For normal redundancy in ASMCA option, you must have at least 3 slices.

ASM actually offers mirroring? Lets say that one of the slices we used to create the disk group had a hardware failure. Will we ever know of this failure?

Hello

System administrators have provided us with a disk array with a total capacity of 700 GB for shared storage. I created two slices of 1 GB for disc OCR and VOTE.

You use the storage?

If so, I sugest you use conventional RAID on the storage systems, if you have the choice.

Create LUNS/disks for the first diskgroup to store VOTING and OCR.

Re: PROT-30: Cluster Oracle location register to add is not accessible

command I can create several tranches from there or I could simply create a slice of 698 GB. Should which option I choose?

I recommend create you discs (slice) or ONE of the 100GBytes. This will help you in the future management of the environment.
If you use more than one of THEM, this will make a big difference.

For normal redundancy in ASMCA option, you must have at least 3 slices.
ASM actually offers mirroring? Lets say that one of the slices we used to create the disk group had a hardware failure. Will we ever know of this failure?

Yes ASM provide mirroring, but if you use a disk (lun) not supposed to create mirroring in the same drive. You will need at least two disks in different tables.

  • Stripping and mirroring in ASM

    Hi all;

I have a fundamental confusion of ASM.

Consider that I have an A diskgroup (it contains 3 discs)

I want to write data of the ABC in A diskgroup.

    Option 1:

    [A]   [B]  [C]| -> stripping happens here.

    Option 2:

[ABC]   [ABC]  [ABC]-> mirrored two ways that happens here.

ASM does support stripping and mirroring at the same time?

    Hello

In the first option that you described, there no mirroring at all. This is the scenario when you define a group of ASM disks with external redundancy (external = do not use ASM mirroring, for example when you configure hardware RAID for redundancy). In this case it will be only interlacing (assuming you have more than 1 asm disk).

ASM spreads data evenly across all disks in a disk group to optimize the performance and usage. This even distribution of data files eliminates the need for a regular monitoring and optimizing the performance of I/O. You can learn more about interlacing here: https://docs.oracle.com/database/121/OSTMG/GUID-114A8CA6-D757-4A70-9F68-C5133724D7BB.htm

In the second option, you described a 3 - way mirroring (high redundancy) and 2-way no mirroring (Normal Reundncay) which means you have 3 groups of failure. Read here for more info on the mirror and failure groups implementation: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b31107/asmcon.htm#BABHBHIE

ASM does support stripping and mirroring at the same time?

The answer is certainly yes. In the image below, for example, you can see an example of asm high redundnacy (3 - way mirroring) disk group, so it has 3 groups of failure.

Each failure Group 2 discs. ASM spreads data evenly on these discs.

    Hi all

    Greetings for the day!

The important word is expected here. It is suggested that 11.2, that the separation of roles, a non-oracle account must be used for the GI. But this is not essential, and certainly not wrong to use Oracle db and IM account as long as you do not use ASM according to security features. So nothing to worry about. You're good.

    Thanks for the reply HTH!

I'm new on this point and learn ASM. I wanted to know is how and what setting are Machine-2 it refers to the instance of the ASM to Machine-1.
    Where I see that?

    Kind regards!

What is your basis for data & ASM version?
    Do you use the grid?
My first explanation of the post is specific to any ASM & RDBMS instance on server.

Describe how these two servers configured.

    You can check in
    $crsctl check cssd

Or say how can we say CSS service where the ASM instance is located...

It will be managed by the CSSD process.

    Read this manual http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/asm-10gr2-bestpractices.pdf

Given that CSS provides the management of cluster and node monitor, it monitors intrinsically ASM and
its shared storage components (disks and starts). At startup, ASM will record himself and all
starts, it has mounted, with CSS. This allows CSS on all RAC nodes to keep metadata diskgroup
synchronized. Everything starts new that is created is also dynamically registered and disseminated to others
    nodes in the cluster.
As for the database, the internode communication is used to synchronize the activities in the ASM instances. CSS is
used for heart rate integrity of ASM instances. Internode ASM messages are initiated by structural
changes that require a synchronization; adding such a disc. Thus, ASM uses the same integrated lock
management infrastructure that is used by the database for efficient synchronization.

  • tests of the device for the time of the ASM and Network Protocol (NTP)

    Hi all.
I try to install Infratruction grid Oracle 11 g R2 amd oracle Linux OS but
    I got the following error.

tests of the device for the time of the ASM and Network Protocol (NTP)
can someone guide me what should I do for them?

in RAC 11 GR 2, the option to synchronize the time between the nodes are ntp or ctss.

If you want to use ntp add the - x option in/etc/sysconfig/ntpd (for example OPTIONS = "-u ntp:ntp Pei /var/run/ntpd.pid x")

  • 11G with ASM and RDBMS problem when the server reboot (dependencies)

    Hello

I just install the new version 11G with ASM for the first time. When I restart my server, RDBMS start before the ASM service isn't over to start. It's like when the care services, CSS and EVM have been replaced by the OH dependencies have been lost. The OH service is started but it's as if he is not optional and others start immediately (ASM and RDBMS).

Early restart, I see the OHservice started and the DSO after that (on the road), but when the RDBMS starts the instance handle of stay (inactive and not mount) because unit number logic for the catalog of service is not available yet. I see in the alert.log to RDBMS catalog segment is not found or not existing (/ catalog not nfound).

If I wait about 3 to 5 minutes and restart only the RDMBS all start without problem.

Is there a way I can adjust the stop with the 11g version service or use the crsctl to indicate to the RDBMS service start only when all the ASM service (MON) segment are mount?

    Thank you

Normally the database is started by the clusterware and not by the windows service.

Thus, there could be 2 ways to do this:
(a.), try to assign the Windows of the database service to manual. It must be started by clusterware.

If that doesn't work, try this:

    (b) leaving the service to automatic startup (Windows), but disable the automatic start of the database. This you can normally change in the registry
    -Online-online Oracle-online key HKLM => ORACLE__AUTOSTART
(not 100% sure on the key, but I'm sure that you'll be able to find it.)

Unfortunately do not have atm WindowsCluster to try it myself.

Additional please check if your db instance has the correct dependencies defined in the clusterware.
    Make one

stat ora res crsctl. .db Pei

    and paste it here.

    So good luck...

  • ASM and table partitioning

    Hi gurus,
a level of table colleague told me of partitioning is not necessary if the DSO is in place, the ASM can manage etc load balancing

    your expert opinion please...

    Thanks in advance,
    Charles

Sorry, it's not true. ASM and partitioning are not related.

ASM allows to balance the blocks for a table or an index on multiple disks, which can improve the IO.
Split a table or index into small pieces to reduce the number of blocks that need to be analyzed and partitions allow parallelism.

Even if you use ASM, you can benefit from partitioning of tables (but this is a design decision based on your data and queries that you run)

  • Console ASM and oem

I just installed an instance asm and database, I use oracle 10g. When I go in the console I see only the tabs tipical (reception, administration, performance, and maintenance). My question is how can I see the asm tab to manage console asm?

On the Home tab next to the green arrow, there are a few links. One of them should be link to ASM. Until it clicks.

  • Distribution of ASM and disk required

If I use the external RAID 1, the minimum disks required are two. Now
If I combine the DSO (interleaving) and external RAID 1 (mirroring only), how many records to a minimum is necessary to achieve the purpose of distribution of ASM + RAID 1 mirror writing? OR, another way, implement WITHOUT Raid on disks, instead, let the ASM mirror and strip, in this case, what are the minimum number of disks must be used?

    Thank you

    Scott

If you want to mirror and scratch using asm, then you must use at least 4 disks.

  • Skype, Apple TV and mirror

My Apple TV mirroring works very well with everything, except Skype. I see all my contacts on my TV screen, I can still see the call through but as soon as they respond it is de-energized. The Skype connection is still ok on my iPad. I've updated all my software, but nothing seems to work for me. Ive seen this works well for other people, so I know it is compatible. Any help / advice appreciated!

It does the same thing for me. iPad3 and last updated Apple TV V3.

Fine mirrors until when the contact accepts the call, then the TV goes back to the Apple TV menu.

BUT in this case it starts working again. When the appeal was allowed and the TV will go back in the Apple TV menu, then make up the menu of mirroring on the iPad AGAIN and start once AGAIN mirroring. When you do that, you will see your interlocutor on the TV.

Do not know what is happening. Obviously Skype does not correctly supports good video mode full-screen Apple TV, but why he drop out of the mirroring?

Let us know if this fix works for you.

Why are you wish to copy the entire external drive, only the data or files downloaded installation can be transferred to your new PC, the windows folder structure / will be of little use to you and cannot be transferred to your new PC. Niether can clone you your existing installation to your new PC, it won't work.
