ASM is to replace ZFS?

I know that Oracle I like to think so, but I'm not sure that this new file system is really ready for prime time?

Let me know your thoughts, or Oracle may be able to answer this question directly.

Smitty

Why do you think ASM could replace ZFS? I don't really see any connection between the two. Maybe you can compare ZFS BTRFS, to some extend, but the DSO?

Information on the storage of the DSO, such as disks and devices managed by ASM, groups are known only by the + ASM instance. An Oracle database instance can connect to an ASM instance to get the necessary metadata for database file extensions. This information is stored in Oracle database APG and Oracle can write to the data files the same way, as it does without ASM.

ASM is a feature called ADVM/ACFS to allow you to mount an ASM diskgroup as a file system, but it cannot be used for Oracle database files. ASM works at the file level and knows how to optimize Oracle database files, but does not include any similar concept as ZFS. The only way that the operating system can access the database files stored in ASM is using the ASMCMD command line utility, for example, to copy files between the DSO and the operating system.

    Hello

    I installed a RAC Oracle 12 c.

Is it true that I have call the commands to replace?

    Thank you.

Normally, no downtime is required to grow/shrink asm if the disks are presented from SAN.

In the case of discs with through HBA:

1 prepare the disk and present it to the hosts in the cluster.

    2. rescan to discover drives on each node scsi bus with

    echo "-" >/sys/class/scsi_host/host/balayage

    3. configure the multipath/udev if used.

    4 create the partition.

    5 assign permissions.

    6. Add/replace or disks with asmca or sqlplus.

    7. remove the old drives.

  • ZFS or ASM? upgrade 9i to 10g the new Solaris 10 OS, Sun Fire x 4500

I need to move/upgrade oracle 9i db to 10g of old sun server to a new server, which is the Sun Fire x 4500 running on Solaris 10. It has no external table, all the disks are internal. My question is which file system is better? ZFS or ASM? From HIS perspective, I like zfs better because it is very easy to manage. But metalink says that he does not support zfs. Even with the DSO when you configure the ASM instance you still need to relay on mirror/raid its oracle home operating systems software. Anyone have experience or test it before?

    Help, please

My hard drive in my R100 went bad and I replaced it and it became a nightmare to install XP.

I spent 2 days on this subject, and I can't break! I have the original Toshiba USB floppy drive that can be accessed by cell phone and a desktop USB external CD/DVD drive mounted in a USB chassis. It's the Sony DRU - 540A. I tried everything on this forum and it does not work.

I copied the I386 folder in the C: / once I'd fdisk and formatted it and when windows was running from the CD it came to try to find the asms file. When I run the Portege R100 Recovery Bootdisk V1.1.zip he can see my Cd/DVD drive however the virtual D: it creates, causing the PC to freeze when I run Windows NT.

Please help because it's pretty darn painful!

    Thanks Brendan

Why would you copy the files from the CD to your HARD drive? To install an operating system, in your case Windows XP just boot from the CD and follow the instructions given by the installation routine.

You can change the priority of booting into the BIOS settings, or by pressing the C key laptop start upward.

  • Real advantage of using ASMLIB for ASM

    Hi all

I have some confusion related to the configuration of the DSO.

configuration ASM 10 g on RHEL

As we know ASM can be configured using the ASM Library driver or RAW devices.

For both options, we use discs (unformatted DISKS) == > raw disks.

What is the real advantage that I get asm configuration using asmlib s/w?

I'm still struggling to know additional benefit when I'm chosen asmlib configure rather than raw.

Can only repeat what you said before: there is no "additional benefit" to the use of the ASMLib instead of udev. In the current version, the ASMLib is replaced by the ASM filter driver, which has more features.

Now the question.  I have a task that runs every morning at 0630 to gather various metrics of the use of disk file system and ASM. The result of this work is recorded and used to fill a daily tracking spreadsheet. Yesterday, I did an extra run after I finished moving all the data files (but before you move the temporary files). At this point, the SMALL DG showed 337,8 GB of usable space.  After that, I created a new temp TS (TEMP2) with its files on DATA2 and dropped the old a little.  I capture info use disk at this stage.

  • Antivirus with ASM disk considerations

    Hi all

We are currently running Oracle 10 g on Windows Server 2008 R2 using file storage system.  We seek to upgrade to 11g and use of ASM disks rather than the file system.  I am aware that there are many considerations here, but I have been asked specifically about how RAW disks and our antivirus will interact.  For the moment, we use the Center Endpoint Protection system on the database server, and then exclude us certain types of files associated with Oracle (DBF, CTL etc.).  This configuration meets the DBA and infrastructure.  Once we start using ASM if, something will have to change because we will not be able to exclude specific file types.

I would be interested in advice / opinion that anyone was around that.  More precisely:

    1. is it possible for a disc of ASM to be infected by a virus?

    2. the AV software is even capable of preventing infections on ASM disks? (maybe its not relevant according to the answer to the first question)

    3. we are likely to see some performance issues with AV software running on our database server, because the current set up described above works fine but is replaced by ASM disks?

    Any help or advice welcome

    Thank you

    Andrew

Disc GROSS means that there is no file system. No virus software can analyze the volumes of the ASM, which can only be used by an Oracle database and what data structure is known only for Oracle. Unless you install any ACF volume, which allows the storage of ASM data that can be accessed by the operating system, software Anti Virus cannot analyze data.

However, the Anti Virus software can interfere with e/s of Oracle applications, which you will certainly not want and that has really no sense. Unfortunately, any installation which is connected to the Internet without any protection against the malware running MS Windows is a suicide. To be honest, I never want to install and run the Oracle database on a MS-Windows Server and see no valid reason for it. There are much better alternatives, such as Oracle Linux, which is also free.

  • IM + ASM + DBMS DB cloning

    Hello.

    I have 1-node RAC deployed 11.2.0.3 on OL5.11 with test DB in ASM (3 x OCR_VOTE discs, discs of DATA 2 x, 2 x discs of FRA).

The goal is to create new cluster using the current cluster as a master and cross DB ASM cloning disks.

Regarding http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/rac.112/e41959/clonecluster.htm#CWADD92122 and "HOW to CLONE a 11.2.0.3 HOME AND CLUSTERWARE GRID INFRASTRUCTURE (DOC ID 1413846.1) ' it is necessary to: »»

    1. prepare the node
    2. deploy the GI
    3. Run clon.pl
    4. Running config.sh

Steps 1 and 2 in my case have been replaced by:

    1. creating a master node in what concerns the docs (remove the cluster configuration and other files vs deleting on direct copy).
    2. cloning of disks and the virtual machine
    3. change the names and IP addresses

I managed to "running config.sh. But config.sh I am running:

[FATAL] [INS-40401] Setup has detected an Oracle Clusterware House on the system configuration.

    Any ideas? Comments?

Thanks in advance for your valuable time.

    Problem solved.

    Environment:

    • VirtualBox.
    • 5.11 Linux
    • 1-node cluster with ASM (11.2.0.3)
    • DBMS (11.2.0.3) installed
    • 1 RAC created DB.

    • shareable x 3 ocrvote
    • given shareable x 2
    • shareable 2 x fra

    1. create the pfile to DB file.

    2. stop all CARS services, disable the crs.

    3. delete the files regarding official documents.

    4. clean the files of the OS: logs, tmp, etc..

    5 detach GI home

    6 detach the DB home

We now have the master node.

1 clone the virtual machine (or disks).

We now have the first node to the new cluster.

    1. prepare the conversion table: IPs, names.

    2. sign in IP addresses, names in DNS

    3. start cloned host.

    4. change IP, OS names.

5 remove and create ssh, establish the equivalence for the users of the grid and oracle ssh.

6 redefine the responsibilities of ASM disks.

7 run clone.pl as a user of GI.

    8. as root, run the root.sh script.

    9 unlock GI.

    10 move or delete ocr.loc.

    11 start config.sh.

    12. check the configuration of the cluster.

    13 control the ASM.

    14. change the name to scan again.

    15 resolving multicast (if necessary)

    GI is ready.

    To prepare the RAC DBMS.

    1. run clone.pl.

    2. run the root.sh script.

    3 change the DB record.

    4 Add the instance.

5 edit tnsnames.ora with the new name of scan.

6 change created pfile initially with the new name of scan.

    7. start the DB file pfile.

    8. change remote_listener. Create the spfile.

    9 start DB.

    10. If necessary, it is possible to change the names of groups of DB name, DBID, disks.

We again invite you cluster and new CARS DB.

I'm tring to fix a defective DVD player on an A30p. It is noisy during operation and no longer works. I think it went wrong.

  • What happens if a disk in an ASM diskgroup fails?

    Hello

I intend to build a server with the following configuration:

    Env: Oracle 11 g 2 (11.2.0.3), grid below 11 GR 2 (11.2.0.3) on OEL 64-bit

For ASM starts, I will use external redundancy. I have a few questions:

What happens if one of the disks in a diskgroup breaks down?

    Would he not available databases?

I do a recovery of database?

    Please advise!

    Best regards

    Hello

If RAID is configured correctly at the SAN level then no matter what failed disk will be transparent to both the database and the operating system and without recovery of the database will be required.

It goes same for file and ASM system.

Keep in mind that a disk as the operating system sees that it is in fact a UNIT number is usually spread over several disks on the SAN.  If a drive fails the SAN would be replaced by a hot spare, and the hot spare pool is maintained by the guys from SAN.  Also a host would have several cards HBA will multiple SAN switches and the SAN itself would have several hsarb HBA going to each of the swicth SAN, so you have redundancy all the way and not only at the level of the disc.

    Hope that makes sense.

  • ASM, re - install

    Hello

We did a new install of ASM on RHEL 6.4.  This position of network for a stand-alone server infrastructure.

The installation ran cleanly.  We have created a called 5-disc 100 GB DATA disk group and disk group called FLASH 2 100 GB drives.  We have chosen the default 1 MB au_size.

After reviewing some notes on this forum, with Oracle 11 g 2 size criteria , we decided to change the au_size of DATA and FLASH.

We were able to disassemble and drop FLASH but not the DATA because the DATA were in use (I guess by the grid infrastructure).

We decided to go ahead and uninstall because we had no data on the grid infrastructure.  This will install a new and we didn't see any other method to change the au_size of the original disc (DATA) group.

We had to $GRID_HOME/bin/rootcrs.pl - deconfig-force (as root, while the infrastructure of the network was working I think)

Then we ran $GRID_HOME/uninstall/Uninstall as a grid.

Finally, we have removed the residule files left behind as root to complete the uninstall.

When we attmempted to reinstall the grid, readers make their appearance in the 'Member' status so we are not able to re - install at this point.

Should we use dd to rid the headers for the readers of the ASM?  # dd if = \u003d/dev/zero of / oracleasm/dev/asm01 bs = 1024 count = 100

So that we can reuse the disks...

An Adviser on re - install in a better way in the future?

    Many thanks in advance,

    William

    Hello

We were able to disassemble and drop FLASH but not the DATA because the DATA were in use (I guess by the grid infrastructure).

We decided to go ahead and uninstall because we had no data on the grid infrastructure.  This will install a new and we didn't see any other method to change the au_size of the original disc (DATA) group.

First of all, you need to reinstall Oracle GI to change AU_SIZE. You must only re-create the Diskgroup.

    Options for change of AU_SIZE:

    1. create a new Diskgroup AU_SIZE desired and move data from one DISKGROUP to another.

    2. save all data DISKGROUP system files or another DISKGROUP, drop DISKGROUP, create it with desired AU_SIZE, restore all data.

DiskGroup DATA impossible to disassemble. This is due ASM SPFILE was stored on diskgroup DATA.

The ability to solve was simple. Move the SPFILE to a restart of the ASM local file system and you will be able to remove/recreate the DATA DISKGROUP.

    With the help of:

    $ asmcmd spbackup

    $ asmcmd spcopy

    $ asmcmd spget

    $ asmcmd spset

To avoid the DISKGROUP get stuck in all the GI of the Oracle Installation by ASM SPFILE, autonomous I always creates a little Diskgroup (+ ASM_SPFILE) size 100 M by using a local disk partition or a logical unit of storage number to store ASM SPFILE during installation.

It's help you future maintenance on his starts which store databases, such as dismount/mount/drop/recreate

Should we use dd to rid the headers for the readers of the ASM?  # dd if = \u003d/dev/zero of / oracleasm/dev/asm01 bs = 1024 count = 100

So that we can reuse the disks...

No, you can use ASMCA to create a DISKGROUP using the option of FORCE on this LUN, it will destroy the old disk header again replacing DISKGROUP.

An Adviser on re - install in a better way in the future?

Yes, you need to reinstall just to perform maintenance on its diskgroup task.

    Kind regards
