ASUS P9X79-e WS Mobo Raid experiences

This Asus MB is supposed to be one of the best CPU licenses of MB there. Construction and component wise I guess it is certainly in the upper echelons [should be for the price].

Someone at - it experience to use the on-board Raid facilities provided by Intel or Marvell. This is crucial in my situation and I don't want to buy a Raid card if I can avoid it.

I'm going to use Raid 10

Thank you

LJ

Well Raid 10 on the edge isn't the best performance and the reconstruction times are longer. However, as long as you have business readers you should be ok. Do not forget that the controllers on board do not handle corruption well at all, especially on raid 10. So make sure you keep your backup data.

The Samsungs are certainly compatible and may just need a few tweaks. The compatibility of G-Skill depends on completely the modules used in this batch and the motherboard compatibility updates and if the QVL has been modified due to changes in module. The Samsung will certainly by a stable system if game directly. G-skills I can't say with certainty because of the mark.

  • Noob setting mobo RAID 0 - traps?

    Gentlemen.

I read at least 500 threads on this forum, and thank you all for your hard work. I would like to ask another question, if you don't mind.

I'll put up a RAID 0 - my first time creation motherboard RAID. I would like to avoid a calamity. I have built about 20 computers in my time, so I don't know the General layout. I read up on threads of the evil of hard drive. I think I have usable material, even if the drives WD 640 GB Caviar Black, I intend to use as the RAID drives could run against the WDTLER problem in time. I can live with the risk.

    1. I've seen, from time to time, mentions that a RAID must be put in place before installing the operating system. It is a question, I have to solve before going any further. My motherboard is an ECS A885GM-A2. You can see that I'm not a high-end user. Most of my material is 5 minutes or shorter clips of my students of mathematics, solving problems to a SmartBoard. Nothing too stressful. Also, I intend to transcode my intermediate AVCHD from Canon T2i of Cineform Neoscene clips to take some of the load on the processor AMD Phenom II 955 BE. Yes, yes - I should be on Intel, but that horse has already left the barn.

    2. my motherboard has only 5 SATA 6 ports. This means that I'll use them all:

    Samsung Spinpoint F3 for OS.

    b. (2) WD Caviar Black 640 GB RAID 0 pair

    c. more than 7200 RPM Hitachi 7K 1000 750Go for all Agency-wise sister

    d. the last DVD drive SATA port

BUT * I have a Crucial M4 64 GB SSD in box with no real purpose. Should I replace it for drive Hitachi 3 year as files/zero page combo drive? I can just add it in - I have more SATA ports. Seems like a waste for one SSD, however.

3 What happens stripe size should I settle? It seems that I have a choice of 64 KB or 128KB.

    4. any other really important problems when configuring a RAID 0 motherboard?

I try to avoid spending 5 hours setting up Windows, CS5, etc to know I made a blunder from the outset.

Thank you for all your help.

About WD TLER, don't you worry about this at all for your situation; it applies to the parity RAID (not RAID 0) controllers only.

Regarding 1) RAID 0 can certainly be implemented after the OS has been loaded. Setting up a RAID 0 pair after the operating system has already been loaded onto a single disc goes softer if the original boot drive is configured as ACHI as opposed to the IDE. If this is not done, Utility Intel can do the conversion later.

Regarding 2) the Crucial probably would have been a good choice for your startup drive, the older Hitachi is better suited to your mixture as the SSD. The only possibility I can think of where it would be useful to add the SSD would be to switch the DVD player to a 5.25 "USB 2.0 enclosure (freeing a SATA port), adding the Crucial and reloading Adobe and possibly other programs on the SSD drive where"loading speed"would benefit your system

    Regarding 3) 64 KB

With regard to 4); Maybe you are getting confused by the discussion about a RAID 0 configuration/programs/OS initialization, the addition of a RAID 0 'set' for an existing installation is really pretty standard, low risk stuff

Finally, if you don't have a large USB key or another methold to save your image of the operating system and your data files, then that should be high on your list of 'next purchase. " And if this isn't in the budget, sell the DSS to help fund that!

    Good luck.

  • Problems installing Windows Vista on a p9x79 pro raid setup.

I'm trying to load Vista in raid0 on 2 WD 1 TB SATA 6 gb hd black
I have an asus p9x79 pro MB with the latest bios. 3.0.0.1184 OROM.
    Samsung sata dvd drive

When Vista first starts loading he asks "a required cd/dvd drive device is missing. If you have a driver disk, cd, dvd or usb flash drive please insert it now.

I used the flash drive I created with the asus dvd provided with Mo and he installed the 'Inter c600 series chipset sata raid controller' allowed the installation to continue.
Then it asked for the product key, and then license, then type setup, where you want to install.

At this stage there is no disk to install to so I click on "drivers" and select the c600 Intel a new, but still no disks.

Here's the funny thing, when I try to load windows 7, it detects the disk in the screen "where you want to install" without having to load the c600 drivers again. He's right there. Win 7 loads fine if I skip the product key, but I know that won't last long.

I need vista loading because my win 7 is an upgrade.
I hope someone can help me with this.

    Thank you. Bob

  • Adding a RAID card to help speed up the export (and another question reader) in first Pro CC

First of all, I read the Page Tweakers export section because that is my main concern is. First my questions, then the background and my current and proposed configurations:

Question 1: Adding a hardware RAID controller, for example an LSI MegaRAID will sufficiently remove the burden of parity management CPU on my RAID 5 software that the CPU will jump of joy and export faster?

Question 2: If true for above, then compare thoughts on adding smaller SSD for either a RAID 0 or less two RAID 0 volume volume complete HDD RAID 5. In other words, I think the purchase of four Samsung 850 Pro 128 GB SSD to put in a four disk volume to handle everything (projects/media, media, previews, export cache), or split it into two volumes of two disks of each and divide the tasks, or keep the idea of volume four disc and previews and exports on my drive HARD RAID 5 array.

The 850 are valued at SEQ write: 550 / 470 MB/s so I could get around 2000 / 1500 MB/s read/write to a disk four RAID 0 or 1/2 who, if I divided in two volumes to minimize the volume of read/write at the same time, if it really matters with these SSD?

The Tweaker page made some comments. A split is carried out the tasks between different drives, rather than a large effective RAID can really slow things down. Because SSDS are much faster than a single HARD disk, I think its more accurate than so I'm leaning towards the configuration of four discs put OS & programs on the C drive, media & projects on media on SSD (2 disks RAID 0) Cache and D (HDD RAID 5), file exchange & Previews & export on 2nd SSD RAID 0 (or combine the two RAID 0 and their functions).

Just trying to get a point of view here, since I have not bought anything yet. Any experience/stories, I would be grateful.

    My current setup of training:

My D drive is a software RAID 5 consisting of four 1 TB Western Digital RE4 (RED) 7200 RPM hard drives with CrystalDiskMark SEQ read/write of 339 / 252 MB/s.

The C drive is 500 GB SSD (Samsung 840 (not Pro) and fact 531 / 330 MB/s.) My OS, Program Files and Page file are on C and media data/files/projects, etc. that are all about the RAID drive.

    Problem:

Current configuration allows for smooth installation, just export seems slow, usually taking between two and two and a half times the video length to export. Thus, a 10 minute video takes 20-30 minutes for export. 15 minute video can take 30-40 minutes to export. The first 10% of the export of re-encoding takes less than a minute (seems fast), but it becomes slower when the final 10 or 20 percent may hang for several minutes as my system is running out of steam. So, where's the waste?

I activated the hardware acceleration (because the GPU hack my GPU is not listed) and it can break through to 25% use a few times and eat up to 600 MB of VRAM (I have 2 GB of VRAM), otherwise it is slowed down export set. The CPU can boost at 50%, but it seems either too busy.

Our calendar is simple with two video and two audio streams (a little music and especially the voices), with simple transitions (jump cuts or cross dissolves). Sometimes, we fast correct color, so that could use the GPU? Also, given that we are filming in 1080 P 60 p and 1080 export 29.97 FPS, I think who is scaling and using the GPU. I know that without the GPU, it takes much longer. I excluded buy a faster GPU because it doesn't seem to be breaking a sweat. I just need to know if my system is a bottleneck at the level of the disk hard because I am using software RAID and my disks are slow and hardware RAID will considerably reduce the processor load so it can export more quickly.

Our files are not huge in nature. Most of our clips are several MBs each. Total files in the project are between 5 GB and 10 GB for each video with Windows Media File export being 500 MB to 1.2 GB on average. Look using Panasonic Camcorders, so the original files are AVCHD, I think (.) MTS files?).

    Considerations:

    1. I think to buy (and future proofing) a LSI Logic MegaRAID 9361-8i is 12 Gb/s SAS and SATA (because some SSD current can exceed the standard 6 Gbps).

    2. I will not replace my current HDD RAID 5 as not in my budget to spend 6 or more large SSD. These discs are more important to me for temporary storage because I delete files saved once. I don't mind a few smaller SSD inexpensive if they can make a significant difference for editing and export.

I can only guess my RAID HDD is slow but the CPU is burdened by parity. I guess running RAID 10 would not really help.

    My configuration:

    my configuration:

    CPU - CPU i7 - 3930K @4.5 GHz

    RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR3 2133 @2000

    Motherboard - ASUS P9X79 WS LGA 2011

GPU - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 OC 2 GB (performed the hack of compatibility list to activate hardware acceleration).

    Drive C - 500 GB Samsung SSD (programs and Windows 7 Pro 64-bit) 840.

D drive - four 1 TB WD RE4 enterprise hard drives 7200 rpm in RAID 5 software

Box - Cooler Master HAF X

CPU fan - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO with 120 mm fan

Power - series Pro Corsair AX 850 watts 80 Plus Gold

    Optical drive - Pioneer BDR - 208DBK

    Thanks in advance,

OK, after overload of information on everything I tried (free), which might be my answer here. I went from codecs to export. When you use Windows Media File, Premiere Pro seems chugging along much slower than when you use the h.264 (not h.264 Blu - Ray). I don't know if it's because Microsoft has found a way to break it or what. But I'm the CPU usage of 70-85% on the 2 Pass of 2 as well as the use of the memory of 40% (or 12 GB). It exported in 14 minutes. Woo - hoo. I then did a similar test using Windows Media File. It took 31 minutes to export. The CPU has spent much of his time in the 30%, especially down in the 1930s mid-1940s with spike for memory usage was only 24% to 35% and 50%. Since then, I've read how h.264 codec is 'plu' for online files. It compresses better with less compression artifacts. He seems better, etc. Well, they both seemed on the same thing for me. I play both on my TV 70 "before I could comment further. In the future, I will consider a RAID controller and upgrade the HDDs to SSDS.

  • Samsung 840 pro 256 GB or not so great raid of 4 disks tray?

I'm debating a 'hand' project disc I thought 4 seagate 1 TB are on my motherboard in raid 5 (asus p9x79 pro).

Now, I know this great as raid controller used his on the mobo - but what sort of speeds will I get if these 4 disks in raid 5? It tempt me to just use a samsung 840 pro and save it instead, but this isn't my first choice.

It also won't be a temporary solution anyway until I get enough money for a disc of 8 dedicated a whole raid controlled upward (which I assume is fast enough).

PS also space is not a problem for me - I stay normally less than 100 GB per project.

    Thank you!

A raid5 4 disc on the motherboard will be probably about 150-180% faster than a single disk and with drives of 1 TB Constellation ES, which translates into about 225-270 MB/s sustained transfer rates. Mind you, it is a guess, since I've never tried a parity raid mobo, but based on what I heard from users who used on-board raid. On a dedicated controller, you would see figures around 360 MB/s for the same configuration.

  • What controller RAID choose?

Hi forum. I'm waiting for my Asus P9X79 - E WS to arrive this week and I'm going to use RAID 0 with a separate daily backup drive for her. Until I can afford to high range as the Areca RAID controllers, etc, I'll have to use the on board controllers. It comes with the following options, which one to pick? I will be raiding two drives 7200 RPM Seagate 3 TB for editing. I have 3 SSD for the rest, like os/cache etc...

    Intel® X 79 chipset:

    2 x SATA 6 Gb/s ports, white

    4 x SATA/3 Gb/s port (s), blue

    Raid 0, 1, 5, 10 support

    Controller Marvell® PCIe 9230:

    4 x SATA 6 Gb/s ports, white

    Support Raid 0, 1, 10

    ASMedia® PCIe SATA controller:

    2 x eSATA 6 Gb/s ports, Red

    Port multiplier support

    Product page:

    Motherboards - P9X79-E WS

Put all your discs on the ports to Intel:

-ports, 6GB x = Boot SSD and the next high-performance SSD

    -port 3 GB x = 2 x 3 TB RAID 0 readers and the slower SSD

    Marvell Ports:

    -all optical discs

    eSATA ports:

-eSATA disks / speakers you have or have planned; disable this option in the bios level if you will not use it at all

    Kind regards

  • Suggestions of Internal RAID card for config

    Hi people,

First a brief summary of my hardware that may contribute to the discussion:

    MB: Asus P9X79-E WS

    CPU: Intel Core i7 Extreme 4930 K 3.4 GHz

SDS OS: Samsung 840 series Pro 256 GB

    Various HD WD Black

    Case: Obsidian 900 d

I would like to put in place a system of internal Raid that the case has a lot of Bay HD capabilities. MB Raid facilities on board are not too reliable, or so I read, so a PCIe card seems the best bet.

Can someone please offer advice on what card PCIe is more suitable for this purpose. I would look at Raid 10 with 4 x Sata disks 4TB

    -Asus GTX 660 Ti TOP

    -Samsung 830 256 GB SSD

Windows is installed, Production Premium 5.5 and Norton Internet Security. All fully updated. It works perfectly, even if the performance of the disk should be improved a bit.

But when I try to change the SATA setting in the BIOS to ACHI to RAID, Windows won't start. BSOD a short while after the animated Windows Startup logo appears (code 0000007 b, no description whatsoever except a CHKDSK /F is recommended).

What's not? Have I forgotten a simple step or make me a more serious problem? I haven't started yet by selecting the disks for the raid still (planning to 2 of the 4 Barracudas in a RAID0 configuration).

  • All disks on Areca RAID card?

When the version PCIe 3.0 1882ix Areca raid controllers are loose, I'll be able to mount a raid 5 Bay 4-6 for the media and other files.  Okay, it's a no-brainer. But...

What other readers? My motherboard has two raid on board - Intel and Marvell controllers.  Not to mention that drives data raid 5, the system must:

    -1 system SSD disk

-2 WD Velocirapter drives in raid 0 for the paging file and media cache

-1 WD Blue disk in a removable Bay for archiving

These disks must be on the Areca?  On the MOBO raid controllers? Advantages and disadvantages of each solution?

  • June-July 2013 video Assembly Hard Drive Configuration - ideas welcome!

    Greetings from Adobe community,

I am a new Member and this is my first question. I appreciate all well informed and advice experienced for my hard drive configuration.

    My new system:

    CPU: Intel i7 3930 k

    MOBO: Asus P9X79 DELUXE

CPU Cooler: PTC 812 CM (Start with Air cooling, hesitant to use liquid for now)

RAM: 64 GB Corsair Vengeance (1600 MHz) (8 GB ea. of course)

GPU: GTX 650 Ti push (went here with plan slim for sell / level as necessary or suggested)

    Case/Tower: Stryker CM Storm

Block of power SUPPLY: Seasonic 80 + Platinum 860W (currently overkill)

OS: WIndows 7 Pro (with option to upgrade to 8)

Engraver: writer pioneer BD & DVD LG burner (excited and anticipating a commercial version of a new technology Petabyte optical )

    -> http://www.extremetech.com/computing/159245-new-optical-laser-can-increase-dvd-storage-up-de-un-p etaoctet

Now, I am open to any suggestion that could be a bottleneck above, but my main question is about my setup of my hard drive:

    I have the following drives:

    2 x Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD

2 x 1 TB WD Caviar Black HARD drive (7200 RPM)

2 x 3 TB Seagate Barracuda HARD drive (7200 RPM)

I'm looking for the best speed, performance and use of these readers cs6 Master Collection, with a special attention given to AE, Premiere Pro and Photoshop.

(FYI: I'll backup all important files on a burning of final projects and external HHD comics)

My plan inspired by suggestions on AF and elsewhere:

    1.) C: 1 x Samsung SSD: OS & programs

    2.) D: 1 x Samsung SSD: media Cache & Previews

3.) x Seagate E: 1 3 to HARD drive for exports (should I buy another and raid it?)

    4.) F: 2 x WD 1TBs in Raid 0 for projects

5.) G: 1 x Seagate 3 TB HHD for media (I would add buy another and raid it?)

6))) < BONUS disc > I plan on running the tests to see how can I use the max RAM, and all that is not used, I am hoping to hear positive comments on make a virtual disk or a couple of them.   (I saw incredible reference points for them).  If it is recommended that could I use a virtual drive for {2 - Cache of media & Preview} or should I just use it for file exchange, cache and other temporary files? (or he renounce the total?)

I know it's a trick question, and I'm open to other suggestions which could include buying ~ $300 in additional disks if it will increase enormously the speed and performance.

Thank you all for reading, and I'm really looking forward to learning of your knowledge and your experience in this field!

    Mike,

    1. Check. Port SATA 6G. Add a static pagefile of 1 or 2 GB here.
    2. Check. Port SATA 6G.
    3. Check. 3G SATA port. No sense in this RAID and double the risk of data loss. Even a 25 GB export should only ± 3 minutes or less to write.
      • The time for export is spent on coding, not on writing. Why take the risk and spend money for a possible second 80-90 win on each export 25 GB? How many times do you do that?
    4. Check. SATA 6G Marvell ports. Make regular backups of your projects.
    5. Check. 3G SATA port. I would be very hesitant to raid0 from the original due to the risk of data loss.
      • X 79 platform is designed for dedicated raid controllers and RAID parity. If you need more speed, go in this direction.
    6. Forget about it. It is not practical. Windows does not start without a swap file, so it will always create a pagefile on C: dynamic if it can't find it. With 64 GB of memory the swap file will be used little or not at all. A static file of 1 GB is sufficient. Whenever you turn off your computer, the RAM disk gets erased and from the start should be newly created. This means that the cache of media must be newly created, indexing, compliant and creation of peakfiles must be made whenever you open a project. This time lost far outweighs the potential gain of a faster RAM drive.

    Just my $0.02

EVGA video card is a good choice, but in fact, if the rumors are correct, the Kepler 6xx series will be announced soon. However, the accouncing and have them in stock at an outlet local are two different things, not to mention the high price right after the introduction.

Alternative mobo ASUS could be the ASUS P9X79 WS, who has embedded IEEE.

Check carefully that the Ripjaw X works on this mobo. IIRC for the 79 X series platform Ripjaw Z are the recommended range.

Make sure that you put a fixed pagefile (min = max) of about 16 GB or even 32 GB in disk Hitachi slightly before you use it for something else to make sure the file is the first file on the disk and delete the pagefile from C: drive.

To avoid too much written that OCZ SSD, make sure that you give to your C: by default file locations and an another drive location. This can apply to My Documents, my music, Cookies, Internet Cache, download, Internet History, Temp, Application Data, Common Application Data, etc.

For the rest, it seems OK to me.

  • Problems Toshiba Ex - 320 GB HD usb 2.0 + unknown device.

    Windows XP pro Sp2
    AMD athlon 64 3500
    2gig ram
    200 GB WD HD Sata
    PCi-E 6800 GT MSI
    ASUS A8V-E Deluxe Mobo

When I tried this out of the box, it worked fine, I can transfer files and everything, problem was that it would connect to usb 1.0. So I checked the bios the usb options have been enabled, I unplugged all the usb cables, I tried different usb, always usb ports 1 only. Ive tried to reinstall the drivers for the mobo cd and the official site. Still connected in usb 1.

So I re installed Service pack 2, since then windows guard see the HD as unknown device now, and I can't access the HD. So yah SP2 makes things worse. I thought a restoration system, but since January 1, my previous save points seems to have disappeared.

I can't find any drivers associated with this product on this site... Its a Toshiba 320 GB USB 2.0 external hard drive.
Ive also tried going into win xp in safe mode, remove all controllers and usb devices, restart in normal mode, wait 5 minutes for the reconstruction of the database, then plugged back in the ex - HD, said peripheral unknown. Ive tried to update driveer with windows looking for me and myself to the research in the win xp cd and the file I386 etc..

    Hmm help?

I intend to format my HD in a few days anyway, but I'd like get this working before cela ex - HD.

    Hello

In my opinion, you will be very happy if someone has experience with the same question as yours because I noticed that on this forum there are a few discussions on laptop and different problems.

Have you tried to uninstall SP2?

  • IastorA.sys is not found

    Hello world

I need to downgrade a machine windows 7 to windows XP. I have formatted discs and I try to install windows XP using RAID1.
Sata is configured for Raid mode. I downloaded the raid drivers and store them on a floppy disk. I then press F6 to load and I get a list of RAID and AHCI drivers to load.
I tried all the raid drivers appearing on the list and every time the driver is loaded successfully from the diskette. I then press 'enter', the installation continues for a few seconds and then I get the error:

    iaStorA.sys is not found

I do not understand why. It loads the driver but then cannot find it?

I also tried to integrate the driver iastora.sys with nLite on a Setup disk, but didn't make any difference.

    Any suggestions please?

    Thank you very much

    Hi again,

After spending a whole day trying to install XP (32 bit) on a new ASUS P9X79 motherboard, I find 32-bit but just that the driver of the TSRI will support XP 64-bit, and that's why I am getting the above error.
