Audio is not working, Sound Device is currently being used by another Application

Name of product: notebook PC HP ENVY m6

Product number: D1E93UA #ABA

I have uninstalled/re-installed the driver, rebooted and still no sound.  When I right click on speakers/HP and Test - the pop up says device in use.  There is no legitimate request by using the device.  I've been running Windows Defender because I used the official HP recovery discs I ordered.  I did not visit questionable sites, and yet, looks like I've got malware?

How to run the troubleshooter?  My search for Windows 8 charm does not give me the in option.

BigBuds:

SuperMario1 (a HP Techy guru) in another thread on the claims to subject the audio problem was caused by Windows update KB2962407 and says that the uninstallation of the update (which is easy to do) will solve the problem and should bring audio for update.

I followed these steps and my audio works perfectly since.

So here's what you need to do: (note that you need to do step 2 to make sure that the automatic update windows is not reinstall the update of KB2962407:)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note that the following troubleshooting is ONLY a workaround, for now.

Uninstallation of the update of Windows, then hide it, is the only way to eliminate the question if she caused by this update. Here is the procedure to uninstall the update:

Step 1:

1. go in Control Panel, then click on "programs and features".

2. click on "view installed updates". Look for the update with ID KB2962407.

3. right click on the update and select "Uninstall". Restart the computer.

Step 2: Then, here is the procedure in order to hide the update:

1. go in Control Panel, then click on "Windows Updates".

2. click on ' Check for Updates '. When the process is complete, is expected to find important updates available. By clicking on the message will open a window where is the important updates.

3. right click on the KB2962407 update and select "Hide update". This will prevent the installation update next time that Windows updates are installed.

Good luck...

  • Sound/audio does not work after automatic update of Windows 8 for the July 12, 2014

Solving audio problems do not detect a problem.

When I go to the control panel > hardware & sound > playback, right-click on the device, I get this message:

"This device is used by another application. Please close all devices... "

However, I restarted the laptop with no other applications running and I still get the above message.

It must be linked to the recent update of W8 for 2 days ago that my audio has always worked fine until here. Without having to reinstall all the software, what I can do, as I have not changed anything other than subscribe to automatic update of Windows? (It makes me want to stop the update btw, if the updates affect the normal performance of my laptop).

A new update for Windows 8 rises to fix this audio problem?

Welcome to any other measure to solve the problem? -Many thanks.

It worked for me, you can't find it on your hard drive, you must go to > Control Panel > programs > programs and features-> installed updates. under the microsoft windows list, locate those added on July 12, 2014. RightClick > uninstall the "update for Microsoft Windows (KB2962407)" (let others, simply uninstall it) it invite you to reboot, and you should have sound after reboot. "

hope this helps, I did not half an hour.

  • Audio does not work after an update in Windows 8

I use a laptop HP Folio 9470 m... Last week some update was installed to win 8 and after that my audio is not working properly. Every time when I need to play a song or a movie, or watch something on the Internet, I need first logout, then after logging in first, I need to open the drive. Other wise the audio does not work... Whenever I check to test the speakers, it shows its used by another application, but there is no application by using the audio device. I checked all the drivers, and everything is right in there... But I don't understand that either the app using the audio device in the background... I even reconfigured my system, suspecting it was a virus. But after installing the operating system first two days, that it worked fine, and then a few updates got installed, now return to the box starting... I can see the updates which has installed, but cannot identify the one which may cause this disorder...

One, any help is deeply appreciated.

    Thanks in advance...

    AG.

07/11/14 - the problem is caused by the updates of security KB2964736 and KB2965788, which has turned off the sound from the speakers and output microphone of my VAIO laptop, as well as all the features in iTunes.

I was able to determine that, because now, I manually install updates after the last problems caused by automatic updates. Having discovered this problem, I did a system restore to before the updates to get my sound back, then I manually created a restore point individual for each update before installing. It was a frustrating and time-consuming process, but I could locate the defective updates that I've now hidden so that they will not download on my laptop.

07/12/14 as a result of writing the earlier yesterday, all sounds had again been disabled when I started my laptop this morning. I did another system restore before installing updates security yesterday (KB2965788, KB2939576, KB2964736, KB2957189) AND my sound back. I've now updated iTunes with the latest version in the hope that this stops the residual fault caused by security updates and I will keep you informed.

    Hi cheatbiscuit,

There is something else you can try. You can try to restore the original driver to see if that brings back the control panel. I have included a link below that will guide you through the installation of the driver IDT high definition original.
