  The solution for me was provided by pknb below.

  Reference Dell Open Audio in the control panel. Go to advanced, energy management. Disable the option to disable audio devices.

  I do not have the Audio from Dell driver installed - and it seems that maybe the default setting is that the speakers put in 'sleep' in the context of a power saving mode. Looking at my description above I even referenced at the time of the issue seemed to be that the speaker was not long in 'waking '. In any case after you change this setting the problem now seems to be resolved.

  You must keep checking with the manufacturer of chipset of the sound card for the updated drivers.  Regarding codecs, I personally used the K-lite Codec pack.  I have all the others have not yet used but only found a reliable being.  You can Bing for Codec packs, but be careful when you download from.   Select sound in the scenario and in properties, change its synchronization to be stream instead of the event. If you find that the flow is grayed out, it means that you are using HTML5 Canvas, which does not support that.

  Sorry Hoh78, I got my answer by Matrox technical support phone (a very useful resource) and should be posted here. Here's what I learned, although it will not apply to your question. I also found on occasion as a complete reboot of the computer and the app can help. First a lot of hiccups.

  1. Preferences > Audio hardware > entry by default, the default output and master clock must all be on the line integrated, not Matrox
  2. Preferences > reading > sound device > Matrox player
  3. Apple System Preferences > Sound > Input and Output must be set to anything but Matrox
