automatic update Windows defender

Windows Update is in my case to "check and inform", because I usually take a backup of the system disk before applying updates.
However, the windows defender updates happen every day, and I believe that they cannot break my computer.
I really wish Microsoft to separate the two updates: enabling windows Defender Update automatically, all while my preference of "check and inform" as regards to windows update in general.
Why should he go through the update of windows defender windows? Cannot make its own updates like any other antivirus on the market?

Hi harrymc,.

Thanks for posting your request on the Microsoft Answers site.

Windows and the programs that ship with Windows, such as Internet Explorer and Windows Defender can be updated automatically by turning on automatic updating.  You can configure Windows to automatically install important updates and recommended updates. Optional updates are not downloaded or installed automatically. With the parameters value updates Windows Update to update, but let me choose whether to download and install, you can set Windows Defender to check the new definitions before a Windows Defender analyzes programmed.

To automatically check new definitions before Windows Defender at the request of scans (recommended)

1. Click to open Windows Defender in Control Panel > Windows Defender

2. click on tools and then click Options.

3. under automatic scanning, make sure the automatically scan my computer (recommended) check box is enabled.

4 check for updated definitions before scanning them to check, and then click Save. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To manually check the new definitions for Windows Defender:

1. Click here to open Windows Defender.

2. click on the arrow next to the help button and then click Find updates.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  • Norton Internet Security 2010 automatically close Windows Defender? __

    My set up:

Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium, Vista SP2

    HP Desktop

    Modem DSL Connection

    Norton Internet Security 2010

I just installed Norton Internet Security 2010. I get a pop up notice of Windows indicating that Windows Defender is disabled. When I had Norton Antivirus/spyware 2008 (that I used until the installation of Norton Internet Security 2010) Windows defender was on, but not in real time.  Then, when I'd go to

The Task Manager > click on the Services tab > click on the Services button in the lower right

This will display a list of Services. I scroll down and find the Windows Defender Service

It shows NOT on and manual start

Before the instalation of Norton Internet Security 2010, it has shown as Started and startup type automatic

Is this the right setting with Norton Internet Security installed? I do not use Windows Defender, but I read that the Windows Defender Service is responsible for other things in addition to anti-spyware scanning.

So should I change the startup type?

    and start the service?

Or, as I said if I don't use it. leave it alone?

    Q. "Norton Internet Security 2010 automatically closes Windows Defender?"

    A. Yes.  It uses its own antispyware software.  Having two different types will result in conflicts and compatibility issues.

  • Update Windows Defender KB915597 automatic update and other sources.

It seems that, after each automatic update of Windows Defender on my computer at home another updated appears another update showing about 3 days more later from "another source."  It should be?  The two definition links are link ID = 52661.  All definitions are different and my computer has been updated July 28,2010-July 30, 2010.  It has been also updated for the same KB915597 on May 27, 2010 and may 31, 2010.  I do not understand why the KB is downloaded several times automatically and also "other source".

TIP: Give your full version of Windows (for example, WinXP SP3;) Windows XP 64 - bit SP2; Vista SP1; Vista 64 - bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64 bit) when you post in a forum or a newsgroup.

Left to itself, Windows Defender will be auto-updated itself twice a week (usually the Monday/Tuesday and Friday/Saturday). These updates are updates "Other Source" you will find listed in the update history.

With Microsoft Update [1] as source of update by default, you will be offered that Defender updates when you run a manual check for updates. Here are the optional updates: If you choose to not install one, Defender will always auto-updated itself by what precedes.

  • Windows update does not update windows defender and so tried to update via windows defender that shows also no update

    Hello!

I've always used Windows updates to warn me of updates and then I install them. Normally Windows Defender is updated daily through windows updates.

For some reason, he is not showing / offering of windows defender updates.

Time windows last defender of the shows has been update on my pc was 11/2.

I know updates have been released since then for Defender, but I can't get them.

Even if it does not automatically show me, I say manually updates to check updates and which shows nothing for windows defender.

So, I went to the windows defender program and used the update it.  This shows also no update available.

Can someone please help to understand what is the problem?

    Thank you so much!

  • Last automatic update windows tried to kill my computer...

The only thing installed yesterday was an update automatic windows vista. I turned off my laptop, and when I got home I tried to start it up. Windows wouldn't start in normal mode, so I booted in safe mode, scanned with my antivirus, antimalware... etc... and found nothing. So, I used the system recovery and put the laptop on the eve of thinking maybe something strange was snuck in. It worked fine, so I thought it was good. I created a new poin of recovery, re-installed upgrading windows and close.
He walks this morning to find that he had the same problem. I started back in safe mode, reused the system recovery and used the recovery point that I had put just before I downloaded the updates of windows and now everything works fine. I have disabled the automatic updates and I have not had problems since.
Does anyone know why the Windows Update tries to kill my computer? The Auto-mises to day running all the time and I've never had this problem before.

Any help or advice is appreciated. Thank you.

    Merydeth,
If you are still having this problem and have not updated your system then here are a few things to try.  First of all, make sure that your system is free from any infection malware\virus.  If you do not have an up-to-date antivirus program and then take a look at this article: get rid of the malware , it has lots of good info on the programs to try.  Then, you go through Windows Update and install updates one at a time to determine that perhaps there was a problem.  Post back with the update and we can discuss more later.

  • Update Windows Defender (KB915597) and AOL9.0VR

    Hello
Running Vista Home Basic. Installed Windows Defender Update definition (KB915597) (1.69.301.0) yesterday. Rebooted and tried to launch AOL9.0VR. Got the message of connection failure. Tried running IE8 and the respect, but has been very unstable - abandon or still holding to find the website.

Stop PC and and came back later. Booted up and tried again. This failure of AOL of time as before but also absolutely nothing with IE8. All access to the internet have completely lost!

Distrusted update as long as everything works well before installation. Performed a system restore for update status. PC rebooted and all was back to normal.

Anyone know if this incompatibility is a known issue for the update KB915597 and AOL software?

    That would welcome suggestions.

At the moment I'm ignoring the prompt update for this element of Defender until further notice.

    Thank you

    Hello

    Just to update all.

Bit the bullet today and installed the update to Windows Defender KB915597, which seem to be causing my problems last week.

Earlier today installed and rebooted and everything seems to be OK - AOL and IE8 both works very well.

I suspect now the AOL or British Telecom (broadband at my home network provider) may have been playing with their settings.

Have you contacted AOL, but still there has been no response

    Hopefully everything is now stable.

    See you soon
