Backup strategy

Hello world!

I need little light on backups...

I am daily backups and increases the space used on the backup server... Guidelines on when I should remove my old backups and how should I test my latest backups?

Thank you.

Oracle knows what issues and questions can be raised by DBA and that's why they provided documents.

Wow... I also find the relevant chapter in docs. A little big, but you should read.

I just joined new company and owner oracle DBA confessed that they have never used in all of their many years as a DBA Oracle rman.  Currently, they have 7 days of files dmp to export for each prod database.  I started to create backups rman for each prod dB and I asked if we can stop exports altogether.  Holder s/n, says exports are still needed in case we need to restore a table or in the case where we need to refresh a development/test environment.  I submit that rman can do and I communicated that I never used exports in a special or as needed case either to move an oracle dB between different operating systems or incompatible versions.  All export their production databases every night?  I've been an Oracle DBA since 10g but I've always been the unique oracle DBA in the shops/companies that I worked.  It is the first time I had a DBA experienced to work with.  I'm surprised actually kind of which my colleague has never used rman being that they are so widely experienced.  Dig deeper, they say they have used the NetApp as their backup method and they try to get configured in my current company that tells me will make rman irrelevant.  What do you think?

My, my, my.  Your recent history of the display, you seem to have a lot of questions with your new business.

In this case, you are partially right.  It is unacceptable for this "very experienced" s/n do not use rman and see no need of it.  If his backup strategy should only take nightly exports, it has been lucky and lives on borrowed time.  If the database is corrupted or lost, these exports don't you a good few until what you create - from scratch - a database of work.  And even then, only, you will have a point in time as a recovery point.

NetApp is concerned, that I've never used but I understand that it is simply wraps around rman.  Perhaps, this can be handy.  Until the disaster where you also get trashed NetApp configurations.  No, when it comes back up, and more important again, recovering from a disaster, I want to work closely with the oracle supplied and approved method.  The extra layers less potentially go wrong, the better.

If they want to continue taking exports every night, he certainly won't do any harm, as long as they realize that is secondary to the required rman backups.  All my databases are backed up with rman.  Some but not all also have nightly exports.  It depends on the requirements.  There are some things for which having a practice of export is better than to rely solely on rman.

  • best backup strategy for the hotel management system

    Hello
I have a fresh dba and I need to set a backup strategy for a HOTEL of Mr. must be available 24/7.
Kindly help me and let me know if you need additional information.

In your case the most appropriate b/s is with Rman. For this, you need to enable the database to archivelog mode. Each time, you need to copy past files archivelog (and rman full backup of database if you wish) generated after that full backup rman was made. Realize you must have as a minimum a full backup rman, all archivelogfiles has been generated since that time.
There is also another way to take backup: hot backup. (read more in documentation Ora). But be aware that this will affect database performance while the backup is taken. And it would be a little more difficult for you.
But if you're not allowed to activate mode archive so the only way is to take the datapump files each time.

  • Backup strategy questions

    Hello

We are trying to determine our backup strategy for the guest operating system. We currently use vRangerPro to our guest operating system with a retention time of 14 days with 2 good backup copies. I know it works and have tested it.

However, we also have Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery installed in each guest operating system and make backups in this way as well. I have restored the livestate to a new guest operating system image and it works, but VMware support this? Did someone else do this way as well? Is this exaggeration and I really need to do backups of vRangerPro?

    Please advise?

    Thank you!

    Kev77

Exactly.  With some of the bulk of businesses like esxpress backup coming out with new versions, we can proceed with their redundant backups of files soon.  We'll see.  Its nice to have two, one for a major disaster and the file level for small documents that remove the stupid users.

  • Database backup strategy

    Hi all

I am trying to get my head around what I should do regarding the archive logs. It seems to me that they should be regularly backed up using some sort of work custom both FRA and external location? I read on some of the parameters that can be set to achieve. According to what I read that would then the deletion policy to take effect.

My question is around what is happening when you use the incremental backup strategy. I understand that I must always save the archive logs and have them in a tertiary location seems reasonable. However, it also seems to have the last full backup also available in a higher location such as if I lost my FRA then I could get it and logs archive for that day.

My thinking is correct on this, and how do I achieve it?

    Thank you very much

    Hello

However, it also seems to have the last full backup also available in a higher location such as if I lost my FRA then I could get it and logs archive for that day.

Is that the FRA can protect data against any type of failure?

What happen if you lose records FRA housing?

So, it is more safe store backup and newspapers archived on several media or a place. You can use strips (a store in a safe place), multiplex of the backup and archiving of destinations (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/backup.112/e10642/rcmcncpt.htm#BRADV107) also you can think of a solution DATAGUARD.

    Hope this helps.

I would like to ask for some advice to place my backup in FRA.
I read in a book that it is advisable not to put the backup archivelog in FRA since if something happen with the disk that store of FRA, everything will be gone. However the notion of FRA is logically a centralized backup.

so, based on your experiences, what is the best way to use FRA to backup strategy?
is it safe to put everything in FRA or we should divide again the backup archivelog to different location?

    Thank you

    Yes, it should be fine.

  • Backup strategy - useful information

I installed Partition Magic and partitioned my HD so now there's a 45 GB C: drive and the rest is a storage called D: drive. In addition, there is the hidden restore partition that takes part of the HD space. Then, I made a bootable USB key and installed boot Hiren CD 10.0 on this. Using this USB key, I booted up and used Acronis Backup, which is part of Hiren and made a backup of my C: drive and put the backup file on the drive D. I also have all the drivers and files Setup program on the D drive and that I have to up the netbook and running. Eventually I'll put music and movies and e-books and all that is on the D drive also.

I have now installed Windows 7 on drive C, but if I change my mind and decide to go back to XP, I can use the USB to boot and restore C drive in XP this backup file. I don't have to start all over again. Finally, I can remove the shadow drive and add space on my D drive but for now, I'll leave it alone.

If anyone is interested how to a bootable USB key, here is what you need. A 1 or 2 gb USB key (I bought a 2 GB drive at low prices at Office Depot for $9.95). Another option for using an old map 1 GB SD with a USB adapter.

Format the USB stick to FAT. Download a free utility called grub4dos.exe. This makes the USB bootable and installs some files needed to start. Finally, the latest version of boot from Hiren's cd, just v10.0 released this week. Then you extract files ISO HIREN directly on the USB key and you're all set.

To use the USB to start, turn on the netbook and press the F12 key, select option 3 to boot from USB. Hiren then you will give two choices, start menu BACK to use the utilities, or start in a lighter version of XP. Explore the two options that you can see what you have at disposal if you need to use them.

    Hi, Edmund

Very nice topic! Thanks for sharing this with us.
I have configured my laptop very similar to yours.
But instead of Acronis Backup, I m using the ghost. I created the backup of my C partition file and stored it on D second partition created just for files).

If something will go wrong, I can use the system restore image file.

  • Question of backup strategy

I am brand new to LR. Before you begin importing photos in LR, I want to just make sure that my configuration is correct and would appreciate confirmation that my interpretation is correct.

I'll use a single catalog that will reside on my laptop HD.

I'll keep the photos on an external HD A in a dedicated folder with the highest level called "Lightroom Photos" or something like that.

HD A keep also backups of the catalog that I will create in LR.

I want to set up a secondary external HD B located off-site. My question is, if my computer and HD has never fail at the same time, or my house burns down, the backup of the catalog on HD B will be able to easily find images HD B if the structure of the file is exactly the same under the folder "Photos Lightroom" of high level? I only need LR search for pictures using this folder one high level (one step) or I will have find the images in each subfolder?

I wonder if I should actually clone A HD instead of just copy this folder parent to another hard drive.

Also, if I use Time Machine to back up my laptop, I is not need to worry about support anything else, like my presets or plugins, correct? That will do it automatically when it backs up my library, etc. ?

Thank you very much in advance for any light you can throw - I could not find the exact answer to anywhere.

You have very well understood.  If this level high back Photos with Lightroom is shown in the records of Lightroom, you will simply right-click > find the file missing and that it points to the same folder on HD B.  Long term, you will find easier to use software to synchronize file (i.e. Chronosync) to keep the HD B updated without having to copy everything works every time you update, but whatever.

Time Machine should be back up your plug-ins and presets, but it would be useful to check that, just to be on the safe side.  They are stored in Macintosh HD / users / [username] / Library / Application Support / Adobe / Lightroom /.

  • Backup program own Apple won't open in macOS Sierra?

When I try to open the backup via spotlight, I get the message:

    Cannot open the application "Backup."

and a registration error to submit to Apple.

So, uh... it seems that my backup strategy is in trouble, having installed Sierra on an iMac late 2014 retina 5 k 27 "(4GHz 32G)." The backup automated capsule Air happening, but my weekly backup cable on a hard drive separate is not possible.

I'm a little surprised to find no discussion here on the boards (I have done a quick search, but may have missed something).

My immediate thought is to leave for a few days and wait for an inevitable update. But, just in case it is a strange corruption isolated to my machine, I would be grateful for all the directions...

  • Change Time Machine backup

Time Machine and I never got along. Time and time again, I tried to turn it on, but it always ends up biting me in the... back.

This is how I have a disc that I had tried last to use as a Time Machine drive. Once more I gave (my different posts on these forums are prolly still out there proving my frustrations). But now, I met another problem. I'm establishing another backup strategy and all I want to do is get my stuff off the drive I was using. Well, guess what? (you prolly already know this) I'm not being allowed to edit the folder Backups.backupdb in any way, shape, or form. I can't drag something out of it, I can't rename anything; I can't trash anything. I tried to "deselect" this drive as the TM drive to see if that would allow alterations, but I couldn't find a way to do it.

Although, no, this is not quite true. I CAN drag things from her on my system drive, but my SSD, basically, 500 GB cannot accommodate all at once. I have to go pieces transfer ten ad THOSE before I can move on. But above all I want pictures and videos from the TM drive and those, of course, are the biggest.

A strange thing that happened that I did drag the Backups.backupds folder on an external one and, surprisingly, has begun to transfer things. But he got about 2/3 of the way through with it and then stopped. as if to say, "oh, wait, I'm not supposed to be allowing this.» So now I have this folder Backups.backupdb partial to this external one, similarly, can I do anything with! Just like the real TM reader, I can't change anything on/in it. And I can't get rid of it!

What the heck can I do about it? TM drive has stuff on it that I have anywhere else.

Oh, another thing. I tried to go "back in time" as TM was supposed to do, and I told myself I am not able to access any Time Machine drive. WHAT is everything?

  • Best way to backup to clean install XP

For everything that you XP pros out there-apparently, I need to do a clean reinstall of my XP pro in order to mitigate the problems and I was wondering the best way to back up files and settings? I train utility backup of Windows file and Settings Transfer Wizard. External recording on HD been wondering way to restore files, settings, Favorites, etc. A representative Dell told me that FASTING is not good because it can restore the things that are corrupt and dup both the problem.

    Thanks, Van

First of all, Clean installs are rarely necessary. What are your specific issues? If all goes well, we will guide you to solve them quickly. :-)

That being said, the data backup is an excellent idea. You should always do this regardless of whether or not you are about to perform a clean installation. For now, why not simply use Windows Explorer to copy your files on the external hard drive? You probably already know where most of them exist. Your IE favorites are probably at this place:

    C:\Documents and Settings\ [user profile] \Favorites

If you use Outlook Express for e-mail, you should look at this page:

    http://www.insideoe.com/backup/

By default, your OE message store is located here:

Bank of C:\My Outlook Express Identity\Message

By default, your OE address book is located here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\ [user profile] \Application Data\Microsoft\Address guide\ [user profile] .wab

In the future (coming soon!), you should really consider a regular backup strategy. The default backup program Windows XP (ntbackup) is old and has its limits. I would avoid it. It would be much better to use an imaging program like Acronis True Image Home or Paragon backup and restore.

  • CSA for ICM/IPCC and SQL Backup Wizard

I have CSA for ICM (version 4.5 - 1 build 639) installed on all our servers to the ICM. It prevents SQL to make its backups to a network share. I stop the CSA and backups work fine. Thus, the permissions aren't too bad on the share drive. The backup works fine if the backup is created locally, is not a better practical backup strategy.

Does anyone know of a work around?

    Thank you

    Stu

the CSA managed product will work without problem. You can customize the policy to work with any backup software.

  • Persistent data backup

    Hello

I'm developing an application in which I saved in the persistent store persistent collections.  I'm developing a backup strategy for the application.  I would like for my users to save data to their desktops and restore it if necessary.

As far as I could research, I found an option only: to register collections to sync with the Desktop Manager.

What is the best way to achieve this? If so, are there examples? One that I found in the BlackBerry Application Developer Guide Volume 2: advanced topics shows a lot of code, but it explains the process very briefly and because my request is configured very differently (each collection is in a separate class) as their example, I couldn't really use the code. They have mentioned that it can be done if the collections can be in different classes, but there is no example of how to do it.

In addition, there are alternative methods?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Daniel

I recommend having a look at the otabackuprestoredemo provided with the BlackBerry JDE.  It shows how an application can back up and restore data stored in the persistent store.

  • Can store backups RMAN in a diskgroup in ASM?

    RDBMS version: 11.2.0.4

Can store backups RMAN in a diskgroup in ASM? If so, is it recommended?

    Yes, you can:

  • Backup incremental level 2,3,4 RMAN.

    Hello guys,.

Can someone let me know what is the meaning / usage of incremental backup of level 2,3,4.

    Kind regards.

Wikipedia can have an easy to understand the reason for several additional levels:

A backup of level 1 decision Monday would only include changes made since Sunday. A backup of level 2 decision Tuesday would only include changes made since Monday. A backup of level 3 Wednesday would only include changes made since Tuesday. If a level 2 backup taken Thursday, it would include all changes made since Monday because Monday was the most recent level n - 1 backup.

    https://en.Wikipedia.org/wiki/Incremental_backup

    What is RMAN?

The Oracle documentation refers only to additional 0 year 1. What I understand, RMAN never supported incremental backups multilevel at 3 levels (0-4). Apparently, people often had trouble understanding the logic for levels 3 and 4. RMAN provides the clause 'cascading', which also existed in 9i and is usually an easier to understand the backup strategy. RMAN also provides or has provided an option to perform incremental backups cumulative at level 1 or higher. For simplicity, the la documentation documentation since 10 g mentions only level 0 only a 1 an other levels is deprecated.

BACKUP INCREMENTIELLE from LEVEL 1 (differential by default, changes made since the last level 0 or 1)

BACKUP INCREMENTIELLE LEVEL 1 CUMULATIVE (changes since the last last level 0)

    Below some info from http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/backup.112/e10643/obs_comm.htm#RCMRF910

RMAN version 10.0.1: levels other than 0 and 1 are deprecated.

If you make an additional workforce 1 backup, incremental or cumulative, and there is no previous level 0, RMAN automatically performs an incremental backup of level 0. BTW, a full backup is identical to a level 0 incremental backup but excluded a strategy of backup incremental level.
