Backup strategy - useful information

I installed Partition Magic and partitioned my HD so now there's a 45 GB C: drive and the rest is a storage called D: drive. In addition, there is the hidden restore partition that takes part of the HD space. Then, I made a bootable USB key and installed boot Hiren CD 10.0 on this. Using this USB key, I booted up and used Acronis Backup, which is part of Hiren and made a backup of my C: drive and put the backup file on the drive D. I also have all the drivers and files Setup program on the D drive and that I have to up the netbook and running. Eventually I'll put music and movies and e-books and all that is on the D drive also.

I have now installed Windows 7 on drive C, but if I change my mind and decide to go back to XP, I can use the USB to boot and restore C drive in XP this backup file. I don't have to start all over again. Finally, I can remove the shadow drive and add space on my D drive but for now, I'll leave it alone.

If anyone is interested how to a bootable USB key, here is what you need. A 1 or 2 gb USB key (I bought a 2 GB drive at low prices at Office Depot for $9.95). Another option for using an old map 1 GB SD with a USB adapter.

Format the USB stick to FAT. Download a free utility called grub4dos.exe. This makes the USB bootable and installs some files needed to start. Finally, the latest version of boot from Hiren's cd, just v10.0 released this week. Then you extract files ISO HIREN directly on the USB key and you're all set.

To use the USB to start, turn on the netbook and press the F12 key, select option 3 to boot from USB. Hiren then you will give two choices, start menu BACK to use the utilities, or start in a lighter version of XP. Explore the two options that you can see what you have at disposal if you need to use them.

Hi, Edmund

Very nice topic! Thanks for sharing this with us.
I have configured my laptop very similar to yours.
But instead of Acronis Backup, I m using the ghost. I created the backup of my C partition file and stored it on D second partition created just for files).

If something will go wrong, I can use the system restore image file.

    I just joined new company and owner oracle DBA confessed that they have never used in all of their many years as a DBA Oracle rman.  Currently, they have 7 days of files dmp to export for each prod database.  I started to create backups rman for each prod dB and I asked if we can stop exports altogether.  Holder s/n, says exports are still needed in case we need to restore a table or in the case where we need to refresh a development/test environment.  I submit that rman can do and I communicated that I never used exports in a special or as needed case either to move an oracle dB between different operating systems or incompatible versions.  All export their production databases every night?  I've been an Oracle DBA since 10g but I've always been the unique oracle DBA in the shops/companies that I worked.  It is the first time I had a DBA experienced to work with.  I'm surprised actually kind of which my colleague has never used rman being that they are so widely experienced.  Dig deeper, they say they have used the NetApp as their backup method and they try to get configured in my current company that tells me will make rman irrelevant.  What do you think?

    My, my, my.  Your recent history of the display, you seem to have a lot of questions with your new business.

    In this case, you are partially right.  It is unacceptable for this "very experienced" s/n do not use rman and see no need of it.  If his backup strategy should only take nightly exports, it has been lucky and lives on borrowed time.  If the database is corrupted or lost, these exports don't you a good few until what you create - from scratch - a database of work.  And even then, only, you will have a point in time as a recovery point.

    NetApp is concerned, that I've never used but I understand that it is simply wraps around rman.  Perhaps, this can be handy.  Until the disaster where you also get trashed NetApp configurations.  No, when it comes back up, and more important again, recovering from a disaster, I want to work closely with the oracle supplied and approved method.  The extra layers less potentially go wrong, the better.

    If they want to continue taking exports every night, he certainly won't do any harm, as long as they realize that is secondary to the required rman backups.  All my databases are backed up with rman.  Some but not all also have nightly exports.  It depends on the requirements.  There are some things for which having a practice of export is better than to rely solely on rman.

  • best backup strategy for the hotel management system

    Hello
    I have a fresh dba and I need to set a backup strategy for a HOTEL of Mr. must be available 24/7.
    Kindly help me and let me know if you need additional information.

    In your case the most appropriate b/s is with Rman. For this, you need to enable the database to archivelog mode. Each time, you need to copy past files archivelog (and rman full backup of database if you wish) generated after that full backup rman was made. Realize you must have as a minimum a full backup rman, all archivelogfiles has been generated since that time.
    There is also another way to take backup: hot backup. (read more in documentation Ora). But be aware that this will affect database performance while the backup is taken. And it would be a little more difficult for you.
    But if you're not allowed to activate mode archive so the only way is to take the datapump files each time.

  • Backup strategy questions

    Hello

    We are trying to determine our backup strategy for the guest operating system. We currently use vRangerPro to our guest operating system with a retention time of 14 days with 2 good backup copies. I know it works and have tested it.

    However, we also have Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery installed in each guest operating system and make backups in this way as well. I have restored the livestate to a new guest operating system image and it works, but VMware support this? Did someone else do this way as well? Is this exaggeration and I really need to do backups of vRangerPro?

    Please advise?

    Thank you!

    Kev77

    Exactly.  With some of the bulk of businesses like esxpress backup coming out with new versions, we can proceed with their redundant backups of files soon.  We'll see.  Its nice to have two, one for a major disaster and the file level for small documents that remove the stupid users.

  • Database backup strategy

    Hi all

    I am trying to get my head around what I should do regarding the archive logs. It seems to me that they should be regularly backed up using some sort of work custom both FRA and external location? I read on some of the parameters that can be set to achieve. According to what I read that would then the deletion policy to take effect.

    My question is around what is happening when you use the incremental backup strategy. I understand that I must always save the archive logs and have them in a tertiary location seems reasonable. However, it also seems to have the last full backup also available in a higher location such as if I lost my FRA then I could get it and logs archive for that day.

    My thinking is correct on this, and how do I achieve it?

    Thank you very much

    Hello

    However, it also seems to have the last full backup also available in a higher location such as if I lost my FRA then I could get it and logs archive for that day.

    Is that the FRA can protect data against any type of failure?

    What happen if you lose records FRA housing?

    So, it is more safe store backup and newspapers archived on several media or a place. You can use strips (a store in a safe place), multiplex of the backup and archiving of destinations (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/backup.112/e10642/rcmcncpt.htm#BRADV107) also you can think of a solution DATAGUARD.

    Hope this helps.

    I would like to ask for some advice to place my backup in FRA.
    I read in a book that it is advisable not to put the backup archivelog in FRA since if something happen with the disk that store of FRA, everything will be gone. However the notion of FRA is logically a centralized backup.

    so, based on your experiences, what is the best way to use FRA to backup strategy?
    is it safe to put everything in FRA or we should divide again the backup archivelog to different location?

    Thank you

    Yes, it should be fine.

  • Restore files, backup created using Vista, you try to restore using XP

    I've known a failuren hard drive on my laptop running Vista Ultimate.  I have a backup on an external hard drive.

    I'm still hoping that I can recover data from faulty hard disk, but it doesn't look promising.

    In the meantime, I'm trying to restore the backup files using my previous laptop, which is running XP.  When I try to select the files to restore by using the backup/restore application, it can't find all the appropriate files.  He seems to want a file with an extension "BKF", but I can't find the external hard disk.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you in advance.

    How plan 2 separate backup jobs using Windows 7 backup & restore? I would like to back up some files more frequently than others.

    Hello CasPhillips,

    Try to use Task Scheduler to schedule two separate backups.

    Otherwise, you may need to use a 3rd party backup solution.

  • Combining three versions in a single backup file using the batch client/config file

    Hello again,

    Is there anyway to get three versions in a single backup file using a config file and the batch client, currently we have this Configuration file:

    [General]

    Operation = Multiple

    Username =

    Password =

    URL = net. TCP://localhost: 5210, Oracle, Drm, ProcessManager

    LogFileName=D:\DRM\VIPTBAU\LOG_FILES\logfile.log

    [Activities]

    OperationCount = 3

    Operation1 = VIP_DIMENSIONS

    Operation2 = ACCOUNT_RF

    Existence3 = ACCOUNT_BS

    [VIP_DIMENSIONS]

    Operation = Backupversiontofile

    Connection = MONTH_END_BACKUP

    VersionAbbrev = TESTPROJ_VIP_DIMENSIONS

    filename = VIP_DIMENSIONS

    [ACCOUNT_RF]

    Operation = Backupversiontofile

    Connection = MONTH_END_BACKUP

    VersionAbbrev = TESTPROJ_RF_ACCOUNT

    filename = VIP_DIMENSIONS

    [ACCOUNT_BS]

    Operation = Backupversiontofile

    Connection = MONTH_END_BACKUP

    VersionAbbrev = TESTPROJ_BS_ACCOUNT

    filename = VIP_DIMENSIONS

    which generates three separate files. We tried using a single operation and listing the 3 times of the VersionAbbrev, but that didn't work and also list the 3 versions in a VersionAbbrev.

    If anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated

    See you soon

    Chris

    Hi Chris Harris-Oracle

    DRM client batch supports export several versions of a single file and restore it back. You must specify the defined version name and the delimiter.

    You can configure the cfg below the backup file

    [General]

    Operation = Multiple

    Username =

    Password =

    URL = net. TCP://localhost: 5210, Oracle, Drm, ProcessManager

    LogFileName=D:\DRM\VIPTBAU\LOG_FILES\logfile.log

    [Activities]

    OperationCount = 1

    OP1 = VIP_DIMENSIONS

    [VIP_DIMENSIONS]

    Operation = Backupversiontofile

    Connection = MONTH_END_BACKUP

    VersionAbbrev = TESTPROJ_VIP_DIMENSIONS, TESTPROJ_RF_ACCOUNT, TESTPROJ_BS_ACCOUNT

    filename = VIP_DIMENSIONS

    Delimiter = comma

    to restore

    [VIP_DIMENSIONS]

    Operation = RestoreVersionFromFile

    Connection = MONTH_END_BACKUP

    SourceVersionAbbrev = TESTPROJ_VIP_DIMENSIONS, TESTPROJ_RF_ACCOUNT, TESTPROJ_BS_ACCOUNT

    TargetVersionAbbrev = TESTPROJ_VIP_DIMENSIONS, TESTPROJ_RF_ACCOUNT, TESTPROJ_BS_ACCOUNT

    filename = VIP_DIMENSIONS

    Delimiter = comma

    Try it tested and it works very well

    Hello..

    You can directly open the a01/app/oracle/admin/OLTPA/udump/oltpa_ora_22840.trc. No need to make tkprof. The trace file will contain the deadlock information, the session and the blockage causing SQL.

  • backup Windows used on xp family - need to locate the .dbx files to restore

    Recently, I wiped the water of the hard drive and reinstalled XP.  I ' v been using the Windows backup utility (from the installation disc Add ons) and I have the old files on a portable hard drive.  I am still investigating the .dbx files to restore the old email from outlook express, but when I use the restore option and try to browse the backup folder, the structure I see seems fragmented and still incomplete.  He did not get down to the level of the individual files that windows Explorer, and I don't want to bring back a bunch of garbage in a new installation of XP.  Anyone know the folder that contains the dbx files, and what else would I be restore with backup if I restore this file?

    Hi there MYOdB,

    You can use the Wizard to restore in the backup or Restore Wizard to select the files to restore; you will need to restore the Documents and Settings folder, because the .dbx files are normally stored in C:\Documents and Settings\ [your original username] \Application Data\Identities\ {a string} \Microsoft\Outlook Express

    You must also make sure that you have hidden files or folders shows: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/hiddenfiles.mspx

  • Backup by using a combination of Time Machine and Crashplan... policy valid?

    I read a lot of discussion on the backup, but I always missed on whether or not the strategy that I came will work.  Hoping that the community will share their wisdom.

    I have just a few files on my Virtual Machine that I really care.  They are: ~ 18 GB of files to archive Outlook and some Quicken files.  I don't think I need to worry about doing a restore of the entire system.  So my thought is that I can use Crashplan (on my Virtual Machine / PC) to back up my files select windows on my Mac HD and then a) using Time Machine to back up the HD-Mac (with the exception of the Virtual Machine) on my external hard drive at home and b) use CrashPlan (on my Mac) to save the HD Mac an external drive to my friend's House.

    What is a reasonable and valid strategy?

    In addition, if it is not obvious to the language I used, I'm a newbie...

    Time machine is never a good way to backup large files that change frequently, because as I mentioned earlier, it fills your fast disk.  If you use your other backup to back up only to select content within the virtual machine and then put it on your mac, then using time machine for files that should be fine.  you want to just make sure that the virtual machine is selected in the excluded section of time machine preferences system.  For a direct backup of the entire virtual machine I just copy and past the folder of the virtual machine on an external drive, but as you can imagine, it's very intensive time.  If you want to back up only the files within the virtual machine then you are on the right track by choosing a third-party utility that can keep a few places in your virtual machine and an external hard drive in sync.  You may also have the program synchronize the contents of your folder and then if you wish then time machine back up.
