Bad partition VM ESXi 4.1 crashed on USB

Help!    My ESXi 4.1 on a USB flash drive installation has been corrupted. I did the repair and am currently connected to the management console. Im trying to understand the editing options of the data store on a Dell 2950.  Who should I choose "keep the existing signature" or "assign a new signature" I need to recover my VM.

Thank you

"Keep Existing Signature" should work for you

Just make sure that the signature is not collide with an existing one. If it collides it should simply not get on its own.

"Before attempting the will, make sure there is no machine virtual running off this VMFS volume on any other host, as these virtual machines can become invalid in vCenter Server inventory and will need to be registered again on their respective hosts."

  • Upgrading to ESX 4.0 host autonomous with local storage to ESXi 4.1 on a USB

We have a stand-alone host with a single raid array that is local to the server at a remote site from ours.  The question of what I've done research, you need to reformat the raid array if you install ESXi 4.1 on this host.  Since there is no shared storage, the only option would be to copy the data from one server to another, or maybe install ESXi on a USB key.

It seems to work fairly well in a test environment.  Are there warnings that I may have missed when I take a system that can be started locally on ESX 4.0 and change it to boot from a USB key with ESXi 4.1?  In my test environment, I know that you can not install ESXi 4.1 on a USB key, if this system had ESXi 4.1 installed on the local disk.  He ended up giving me the GROUP when he discovered another ESXi installation.

    Thoughts?

    Matt

As you may have noticed a new ESXi installation will wipe away the installation partition.  If you have just a single Bay, then you'll want to go to the root of the USB.  If the data store was on a LUN or a separate table, then you'd be OK to install ESXi on ESX.  As long as the boot order is set correctly, you'll be fine.

In my test environment, I know that you can not install ESXi 4.1 on a USB key, if this system had ESXi 4.1 installed on the local disk. He ended up giving

me the GROUP when he discovered another ESXi installation.

What kind of system did you use for testing?

  • Partitioning of ESXi 3.5 VM

    Hi all!

I have a question about adding partitions to a VM already installed. My VM is on an ESXi 3.5 and OS is Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition. Hard drives are 2 in RAID 1 + 0 and

4 RAID 5 (active 3 and 1 spare - RAID 5-1, 82 TB total). I set up my OS and he acknowledged my RAID 1, but when I tried to add new RAID 5 volumes - I can not add

more than 256 GB per disc. But I need at least 500 GB per volume. Can someone help me and tell me how to add a few 500 GB of RAID 5 volumes at the prompt

    OPERATING SYSTEM.

I thank very you much in advance!

    Hello.

You are limited by the size of the block of the data store.  See KB 1003565 for more information.

    Good luck!

  • Aligns Partitions in ESXi 4

I installed a new ESXi 4 server on a HP DL380 G5 server with local hard drives and a controller RAID P400.  The OS partition consists of two 146 G 15K SAS drives in a RAID 1 + 0 (mirrored) configuration.  I read that you need to align the partitions in order to obtain the best performance of e/s, but all the instructions I see are for version 3.x.  (I am the rest of the paper found here: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx3_partition_align.pdf).   Is it necessary to align partitions in version 4, or which is done automatically with the installation now?

Here are the instructions in this document:

    *

    Instructions for VMware VMFS Partition

    Alignment using fdisk

    *

To verify that your existing partitions are aligned, the command:
    Fdisk-lu
    The result is similar to:
Starting the device start end blocks Id system
    unknown/dev/sdj1 128 167766794 83883333 + fb
Alignment of the partitions start at 128. If the starting value is 63 (default), the partition is not aligned.
If you choose not to use the VI Client and create partitions with vmkfstools, or if you want to
align the installation default partition before using it, follow these steps to use fdisk to align
a partition manually from the ESX Server service console:
    1. type fdisk/dev/SD & lt; x & gt; where & lt; x & gt; is the suffix of the device.
    2. determine if any VMware VMFS partition already exists. VMware VMFS partitions are
identified by a partition system fb ID. Type d to delete to remove these partitions.
Note: This destroys all data currently residing on VMware VMFS partitions you delete.
Make sure that you back up the data first if you need.
3 type n to create a new partition.
    4. type p to create a primary partition.
5 type 1 to create the partition No. 1.
    6. Select the defaults to use the full disk.
    7. type t to set the system ID. the partition
8 type fb to set the ID of partition system on fb (VMware VMFS volume).
    9. type x to switch to expert mode.
10 type b to set the starting point.
    11 type 1 to choose partition 1.
    12. type 128 set to 128 (element of the array allocation size).
    13. type w to write the label information and the partition on the disk.

Here are the results when I run fdisk-lu:

    ~ # fdisk - lu

I can't past the first step in the instructions because they say that I should see something like/dev/sd (x) in my outings.  What I got instead is dev/disks/mpx.vmhba1...  Even if I try to substitute my output for which is listed in the output, I get an error message from the console.

Can you please give me some advice?  I understand that once the ESXi is installed and data warehouses are created using the vClient, all right, but I need to know if I have to align the ESXi installation first, before we get to the creation of data warehouses in ESXi.

Thanks in advance for your comments,

    Chris

I just re-read your message. If you create the VMFS partition via the VI client, the partition will be automatically aligned so you don't need to use fdisk to align it. If you are using LInux guests, then you should align the partition within the virtual machine. If you use WIndows clients, and then use diskpart to align the partitions.

  • Partition and ESXi windows server 2 k 3 resize os vmdk

Is it possible to shrink the partition (I see in vmtools there a preparation to the boom how well that works and can it be done live?

It might be simpler to run VMware Converter inside the guest, resize the disks and by publishing the new virtual machine to the same box of ESXi.

  • partition of ESXi

I want to install esxi on local disk with 4-5 virtual machines on local disks no san. Is it acceptable to simply use a large RAID5 partiiton and install esxi and vms based here? Or is it better to create a RAId1 for esxi installation and a RAID 5 for virtual machines? I don't want to lose too much space for just the esxi installation.

PERC 6 / i has the ability to create multiple logical drives built in in the contrioller BIOS. With a RAID 5, for example, you can configure up to 16 logical drives. See http://public.support.unisys.com/pcproducts/esx/docs/DellDocs5.4/en/Perc6i_6e/chapterb.htm

prior doin so I would ask, does make a significant performance difference if you install ESXi on the USB 2.0 stick or say this serial ATA 6 GB connected SSD drive?

    Hello

use the USB. your SSD is best used for quick local store or caching of data.

    ESX doesn't have fast disks.

might be better to have a second USB in case of failure of the first

This way you can recover quickly

also if your server supports installation on a flash card. the new HP proliant DL 380 of the G8 are on flash cards

But IBM uses the USB also.

Hey, I was wondering if anyone has an idea about this problem.  I have a Gigabyte 6PXSV4 motherboard and I try to get the onboard USB 3.0 ports working for a bit of extra speed of backup jobs.  The problem is between the transition from the "VMware hypervisor loading" black screen (below) and grey and yellow ' VMware ESXi 5.5.0 (VMKernel Relase Build 2068198 "screen (also below) all USB 3.0 plugged power down devices, giving no chance to the connected devices appears in the vSphere Client.).  Compared to USB 2.0 ports which remain under tension and I am able to assign devices to the virtual computer guests and etc.
