  Hello JimFolmar, this looks like a problem caused by already active adware on your pc.

  Please go to firefox > addons > extensions and remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, the things that you have not installed intentionally, I don't know what purpose they serve, etc.). also, go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and run a full scan of your system with the security software you have in place and various other tools such as the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner.

  I run the test center for a very large school district with over 120 students of k. We have a current deployed at base of 54 client machines of k using Firefox 3.6.   Way to go, FF! A few more changes like this and we will not be able to tell you and IE independently of the other. In version 7 you rearranged your menu tab to be just like IE ("open in a new tab" moved to the first item instead of 2nd where it was for years) and now you keep the previous tabs open (including the first page, launched with the new window) when opening a folder of bookmarks. Boo!

  Reinstall the hard drive in the laptop.  Scroll down on this page and get > Bootable CD ISO and > ImgBurn to burn the iso image to cd, a guide on the use of ImgBurn to write an ISO on a disc is here.   I'm sorry to say this, but you cannot back up Windows in this way. As you have unfortunately discovered, simply copying the program files does not work. You would have needed the system image using a program like Acronis True Image . There is nothing you can do about the programs; they should all be reinstalled from the media (CD or executable files downloaded from the Internet). With respect to documents, you can take possession of them. The read-only attribute is not applicable to folders in Windows XP.
