Can I configure a dvswitch with 1 physical NETWORK card

Hello

A small question.

I want to run a few tests associated with netflow, so I install a dvswitch

I would like to add 2 hosts tteignant with a unique Teddy.

y at - it no minimum number of natachasery pre - req?

the dvswitch would work if a host has only 1 Teddy (uplink port)? will I still be able to remotely manage the esx host?

Thank you.

No, there is no such minimum number of natachasery physical. It works perfectly with a single dvUplink without interruption if you prepare a dvSwitch then use assistants vmkernel/vm portgroup of migration so that entrust you the uplink.

Worst case you can still fix things in the cli with esxcli or esxcfg-vmknic/esxcfg-vswitch.

I have a Dell Poweredge server here at work with 2 NIC cards on it. I have the ESXi hypervisor installed and created virtual machines. I want to use two network cards that the lables vmnic0 and vmnic1 VMware. I would like to share the same subnet. See the attached screenshot. vmnic0 works very well and it is connected to vswitch0. My management network uses this same vmnic0. I guess I have to turn on VLAN somehow. Do I need to do to the ESXi Server Console? Goal is to be able to put a box until the server ESXi Dell itself and connect a crossover cable and have an IP address to be able to get leased to it in the same subnet, connected on the vmnic1. Thank you

The problem here is that there is a requirement of 3rd communication. The esx server you are converting to must be contacted as well. If you connect your machine of transformation of the physical machine, you can convert local files, which should be no problem. But, you don't want to keep these files locally on the server of conversion, you are trying to convert it to ESX, correct? It's the difference between your previous method and your current attempt.

  • VM simple Load Balancing with 4 physical network adapters

I have one main server with 4 cards of physical network dedicated to this server in a vSwitch. I wanted to know the proper way to balancing configuration in vSphere to allow a theoretical throughput of 4 Gbit/s. The options I have, as you know:

    1. Port according to ID - this the method by default when you have 2 or more physical NIC connected to a virtual switch. The VM traffic is realized on a physical NETWORK card based on the VMs virtual port ID and is incremented in the style of round robin. So if you have 2 NICs physical network, the first drop of will traffic VMs that the first NIC, the second VM shuts down to the second NIC, third comes out first NETWORK card and operating system on - host ESXi does not resemble the traffic so if VMs 1,3,5 are heavy network users they will go on the same NETWORK adapter even if the second NETWORK card can be totally unused
    2. Address based MAC - based similar to port, but the physical NETWORK adapter is selected according to the MAC address of virtual machines
    3. IP hash database - the physical NETWORK adapter is selected based on the starting and destination IP address - so if a virtual machine connect to several IP addresses that traffic will be disttibuted on all physical network cards - note this will require LACp be configured on the physical spend this ost ESXi connects to

The first two sound me as they would give me what I want from the physical NIC selection is based on the virtual source, not the destination machine. So, since I have only a virtual computer, the LB would never use a physical NIC and I'd be stuck with 1 Gbps.

The third option seems more promising, but I do not have much exposure to the management switch. LACP would be similar to the creation of a trunk on my 3Com switch 2848 reference? It seems likely, but I wanted to run it by the experts to make sure.

    Thank you!

EDIT: I think I just found the killer. Cited in the manual for my switch:

The switch does not support the aggregation of links
Protocol LACP (Control), which is specified in the IEEE standard
    802.3ad.

Does that mean I'm desperate to do my 4 Gbps with the swithc and I MUST get a LACP switch?

You will need either LACP or EtherChannel on your switch upstream to support IP hash configuration, install, configure, manage Volume 1 book for ESXi 5.0. With hash IP, MAC address of the virtual computer may appear on any of the physical interfaces available for the vSwitch (at least for the outbound traffic), which would cause problems on the side of the physical switch unless a method of aggregation (LACP or EtherChannel) link type is enabled.

  • Help connect customers 2 linux on windows host 7 on 2 physical network cards

I'm relatively a newbie, but I searched the forum and pulled some of my hair, I need help.

I have 2 clients linux running windows 7. I want to fill each to a separate physical NIC Linux client

    Here's what I did:

I have access to the vmnetcfg utility.

Bypass: I can fill 1 image of the physical NIC 1 and this image connects successfully; the system allows me to fill the 2nd image as well as the 2nd NETWORK card, but the default value in the network address on the first NIC.

I checked the VMX file and looks like that below, I could not find all the entries on the E0 or E1 interfaces, the VMids appear me as different (long number)?

Host networks: is it possible to combine physical network cards with the virtual vmnets? I could also connect the networks host with different IP addresses if it works.

If I assign an IP (1.1.1.1) to the first physical NETWORK adapter, open to vmnet0 and assign a different IP (2.2.2.2) address on the second NETWORK card deck to vmnet 2, the period of INVESTIGATION on the second NIC automatically goes to the IP address of the first NIC (1.1.1.1). I can understand is that 2 NICs are bridged automatically together in 1 bridged network. I want to that I'm not able to reach is 2 separate bridged networks, one on each physical NETWORK adapter

To have a guest passed on a VMnet you don't need an IP address on the physical NETWORK adapter information.

You cannot fill two physics to even the VMnet adapters (except you have a driver of consolidation on the host, but this will create a logic board that gets filled then). You must assign a (default) VMnet0 physical NETWORK card and the other to a free VMnet (VMnet2, for example). Each VMnet is a virtual network that can hold a single IP subnet, so it is not possible to have two cards with two different subnets physical in a single VMnet.

Host networks: is it possible to combine physical network cards with the virtual vmnets?

Yes. If you assign a physical NETWORK card to a VMnet it becomes another bridge.

It's OK, but I would like to have 2 separate bridged networks. I tried this but I find myself with a single bridged network.

Assign a physical NETWORK card to VCMnet0 and the other to VMnet2. This gives you two adapters bridged. In the prompt for the virtual NETWORK adapter choose what VMnet (and thus the bridge) must be used.

This is a common configuration. Learn more here: http://pubs.vmware.com/ws71_ace27/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm#href=ws_user/ws_net_advanced_linux_secondbridge.html

  • Best way to make the physical NETWORK card-> vmnic number?

Is there a known way to understand the link between the vmnic0, vmnic1... logical names and their relationship to physical network cards of ESX/ESXi? In other words, if you get on a new server with, say, 6 physical ports and a config on one vmnic, how do you know which translates to correct physics?

The means that I can think of are:

    • Check the MAC address within vSphere Client, but then you must somehow know the MAC of the physical NETWORK adapter

    • check the number of PCI of vSphere Client, but this seems a bit difficult to understand?

    • fix pull cables and are looking for "plugged" or not.

So, how do you do this, if necessary?

In fact, it is quite easy to see which port on a teddy bear refers to things in the VMware environment...

Look under configuring the host tab/Server/network element equipment adapters... This will show each NIC and what vmnic # are assigned to the ports. It will also show the MAC address of each port. If they are assigned to vSwitches, it will also show this info...

You can also see the Networking section (still under the Configuration tab) to see the vmnic # assigned to each vSwitch...

Multiport NIC generally have markings on the plate PCI to let you know which is which... All you really need to know is what is the beginning of numbering.

  • How to get 2 virtual NIC works when there is only 1 physical NETWORK card?

    Hello

    Running VM Fusion 2.0

I want to create a Virtualversion of Ubuntu that will have 2 virtual network cards which is both connected to my NIC physical 1

I added the network cards successfully, but when I run ifconfig eth0 only arises

I edited the vmx file by adding the lines below, but without success

    ethernet1. ConnectionType = "custom" ethernet1.vnet = 'vmnet2'

Someone knows how to do this?

    See you soon

    Tom

I guess that you configure additional virtual networks in Fusion by using something like: Advanced Networking Configuration - Tokamak Networking Scripts for VMware Fusion , since vmnet2 does not come configured out of the box with the merger and there is no way in the GUI to do.

I interpret what you're trying to do like the creation of two virtual network cards in a time filled with the same physical NETWORK card in the Mac VM. Can you explain what you are trying to accomplish by doing that? This configuration can cause two interfaces with an IP address on the same subnet, including many UNIX-like (and Windows) nuclei do not take very kindly.

You may also check the Ubuntu network configuration (to ensure that the new NETWORK adapter is enabled and configured).

    Hi Bartoooo welcome to communities,

It is possible using the virtual network Editor. You must disable the automatic bypass and specify which physical NETWORK card to fill what VMNET adapter.

Your wireless card has stopped working properly.

There is a network adapter that allows your computer to connect to a wireless network.

To find out if a version update of your wireless network card is available, contact the manufacturer of your device or computer.

Go to the website of the manufacturer of your computer/laptop > drivers and downloads Section > key in your model number > look for the latest Vista drivers > download/install them.

  • How can I set up 2 physical network cards, 1 for the host and 1 for vm?

    Hello

With the help of VMWare WS 7.1. I have a physical machine with 2 network as the host cards. Currently only one of the cards network is connected to the network.

It hosts a SBS 2008 Server virtualized (while we prepare permanent news of the home server). I know not to leave the virtual machine SBS see doamin on the network controllers.

I want to give a static IP address on one of the network adapters on the virtual machine and allow the host have the map of others.

Can someone give me the steps or point me to the instuctions?

Or is it better to use a NETWORK card? The virtual machine is currently using a NIC a nic virtualized in bridged mode.

    Thank you!

    1. disable automatic bypass on VMnet0 in network virtual and configured Editor to use the map NETWORK active on the host.

    2. in the Virtual Machine settings > set it to network adapter connected by a bridge.

    3. in the guest operating system, configure the IP address as you would on a physical computer. Take a look at: Managing Your Windows Small Business Server 2008 Network

    It's as simple as that.

You cannot move the graphics card because it s mounted on the motherboard.

The replacement would cost about 300-400 euros.

I think a desktop PC with a new graphics card would be much cheaper ;)

You should already have a phyiscal WHAT NIC assigned to VMnet0 (bridged). So if the choice as vonnection for a guest. Create a second connection open by assigning the physical NIC then to VMnet2, for example (VMnet1 is already in use). Assign this connection to the second guest.
