Can I connect external drives, flash sticks, cards, etc. to a specific drive letter?

Hello. My question is for Windows Vista, Xp and Win7. I have Vista and XP.

I was wondering if I can assign (or delete the assignment) a drive letter to the external hard drive. I have a laptop and that not always you wanted to plug a certain external drive first, and everytime I turn on the unit. If I can assign a drive letter - I wanted to have it exclusively for some external hard drives, flash sticks, cards, etc. If possible. And Cancel if something breaks or is replaced, etc.

Can I do this with my office also (this is the XP one)?

Can it confuse the system? What updates or anything like that? What happens if I change the associated device?

Also would it help if I run specific programmes on a device external usb, but I am currently not.

Assuming this works: I can leave something assigned to the drive letter K and whatever it is I plugged in any OS: nothing runs the K drive unless it is the specific device, even if not assigned devices...? Those who can jump to L or D - J, etc.?

Thank you.

Assignment of drive letters is pretty easy - use tool (diskmgmt.msc) disk management to assign letters.  Insert the disk or device, run the disk management tool, find the drive or device, right click and select 'Change Drive Letter and paths', click the 'Edit' button and assign the drive letter you want.  Not the drive letter assignment is made by inserting the device and using the button 'delete '.  I don't know of a way to remove a drive letter assignment, if the device is missing or damaged /-maybe someone else can chime with this knowledge.

  • Question: How can I format external drive in exFAT? NOT in NTFS!

OK, so frustrated that I had to go through the hedges to sign up here to ask a question like that. Why can I NOT format exFAT? I have many external HDDs that were formatted in exFAT under WIndows XP Pro but my new system, completely updated Windows 7 Professional, I can't format external drives of exFAT. The option is NOT available. In the Format window, file system, is the only option: NTFS (default), there is no other option. I googled the * on this issue and found no answer. This external hard drive MUST be formatted as a disc exFAT. Period. Someone please help.

I'm surprised the research online increase this... You can do it from the command prompt, but not from this dialog box.  Here's how:

-Open a command prompt by typing cmd in the start/search box, right click on the cmd search result and select "Run as Administrator"
-Type format g: FS:exFAT , then press ENTER to start formatting the G drive as exFAT
To view all other options, type format /? and press ENTER.

  • How can I change the drive letter of the second disc of C: to another letter?

original title: I add an opportunity second hard drive labeled C:. How can I change the drive letter of the second disc of C: to another letter?

I'm runnibg Vista service pack 1 on a Compaq Presario with a labeled hard drive C:.

No you haven't, how it was labeled in the old pc is irrelevant, just install you it as slave on your PC drive, depends on the question of if you need to change the jumper on the drive. Some PC manufacturers require the rider to be set as "cable select" others as "slave" (unless of course, it's a sata drive that requires no jumpers)

Once it is set, when you start your PC, it will be assingned a drive letter

  • How can I change the drive letter assigned to the partition of 'winretools' on a laptop Win 8?

I'm just going through the process to customize a new Inspiron 14z with Windows 8. The only thing that left me speechless are all provided partitions installed on drive, thanks to a combination of everything be different on Win8, Dell make their own way and GPT formatting.  Generally, I would like to know what the devil all these partitions are for, but it is fine if it will be a slow learning process.  More precisely and immediately, I need to change the drive letter assigned to the partition of 'WINRETOOLS '.  Currently it is D:, and the problem is that 10 years from now, I'm using as my data partition D: and a number of applications, configurations, settings, etc. assume that all my files are on D:.  For example, by having all my music on D:, I can sync iTunes library and preference between machines and all results files and playlists is from a machine to another.  Same thing for my photos.  Same for a bunch of utilities like FTP consoles, sync utilities...

In an earlier version of Windows, I would just go into management drives, right click on the partition in question, assign a different drive letter and work done.  On my machine, the WINRETOOL 2 GB partition shows not even as having a drive letter in disk management, despite the fact that it is D: in Win Explorer.  In addition, only the right click option is 'help '.  I took this option, and, despite its aspirations, it is not useful.

How can I change this drive letter to something else?  WINRETOOLS should even have a drive letter in Explorer (some messages that I've seen indicates that it must be hidden)?  If I change the drive letter, which will break its function, whatever it is?

    ....

My machine has a 500 GB of rotating disk that has all of the above partitions.  I shrunk the 80 GB C: partition, to create a data partition.  I've not yet formatted the unallocated space I want to solve this WINRETOOLS thing first.  Finally, there is a 32 GB of SSD that I put in place as a cache of the Intel Smart Response, and it is no longer visible to the operating system.

When I replaced a hard drive, I wanted the same drive letter, but he wants me to take another. How can I assign the drive letter, that I replaced. The letter is now used by another device?

Open disk management, find the drive using the drive letter you want to use, change the drive letter of this to 'Z', find the new drive, change the drive letter that you want, and then change the drive letter of the drive you have labeled it 'Z' to a drive letter of your taste.

  • Can not see the drive letter for Hammer 640 GB external hard drive

I have an external hammer 640 GB drive (which has a Western Digital WD6400AAKS drive inside) with important data. When I connect to my computer (under Windows XP Pro), I can see the player if I go to my computer-> hardware-> readers but can see any drive letter.

Even if boot disks using software such as Hirens boot and demarrer start with the BACK, do not see this drive (I tried A - Z).

There is apparently no physical damage to the disk.

    Hello
In this case, it seems to me that the drive itself is damaged. For this purpose, it is likely that there is no conventional solution through Windows itself.

I suggest you seek a professional store of COMPUTING, or computer confidence. If information on this drive is still recoverable, it will probably take advice from specialized professionals and know how to do really.

  • Can't access external drive in lightroom 5

My hard drive was full, so I copied the file 'My lightroom photos' on an external drive.  Then I deleted the file from my hard drive.  Now I can not find the external drive in lightroom5.  All the files on the hard drive are grayed out with one? on them.  How can I find and access the external drive in lightroom, and then how to record all future imports this file?

    Thanks for your help.

You will neeed to import again.

    Use Import > add

Then navigate to the pictures folder.

When you have new pictures put them in a new folder and navigate to this folder.

You will need to keep the external hard drive connected when using LR5.

Have you checked the TCP/IP protocol if the IP address setting has been configured to automatically get?

Check if there is an active firewall

  • Can I change the drive letter of the recovery partition?

HP P7-1235, Win7 64 bit running. 1 TB HARD DRIVE

I usually partition my hard drive, so that my data is separate from the operating system and applications.  the operating system is the C: partition, and my data is generally D:.  The problem is: "D:" is used by the recovery partition.

I can change his letter to something else, and recovery still works?

    Hello

Well, everything has been said on this subject and its okay.

It's better to not touch the D: partition, set another letter to your other partiion, if you change the recovery partition, you won't be able to use it.

But you can also do a thing, you can go ahead and create your copy of the recovery disks, just enter some DVD, create your copy of the recovery Image, then you can change the drive letter of the partition Recovery to E: or even delete that.

A copy of records RRS, you can always use them to again state of the plant, and that will reformat all your partitions, create the recovery disks and do what you want and prefer with you D: partiion.

    Thank you
