Can I delete the download of Service Pack 2 before installing to free up disk space?

I got a Vista Service Pack 2 downloaded a notification and is ready to install.  I have also received notification of other updates in the past which have been downloaded and ready for installation, but I chose not to install.

  • These downloads occupy disk space?
  • If so, can I delete to free up additional disk space?
  • I'm on a laptop with only 1.5 GB of free space after the disk compression.  A real problem.
  • If I can remove the updates downloaded, how can I find them?  And what is the procedure?
Thank you

I don't think it's a good idea to run Wista without installing SP2 and all the essential and important updates - but the decision is yours.  Here's how to delete downloads prior to installation if thay have not already installed it.

Stop the automatic updates service

Click Start, choose Run (or type it in the search field).
In the run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the automatic updates service.
Click on stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Delete the content of the download folder
Click Start. Choose run.
In the run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Open the download folder.
Delete all the contents of the download folder (or just update you do not want to install)
Close the window.

Start the automatic updates service
Click Start. Choose run.
In the run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the automatic updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

By removing the contents of the download folder - you have removed the downloaded updates (or those you selected).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Microsoft Fix - It ran... computer & rebooted... closed repeatedly...

    Problem persists... Help!

    Lane

It is a common problem with updates of .NET. Here are the steps I follow

    First try this...

Download and run the Microsoft .NET Framework repair tool , then visit Windows Update and let it try to reinstall updates. Once it's done, scan again with Windows Update to ensure that they properly installed.

If the above does not make it...

Open Add or remove programs, click on .NET 3.5 and choose repair. I got around to test if this fix actually .NET 2.0 and 3.0 of the .NET also, but it's worth it. I do not know if it can also cancel updates already installed .NET. If so, they will reinstall when you perform a Windows update that is the next step after the repair.

If the repair does not fix it, will add and remove programs and uninstall the .NET Framework 3.5, 2.0, then 3.0.
Visit Windows Update, select Custom scan and under software, optional install this...

It must be installed by itself. Windows Update will not let you do otherwise.

When he did install (I forgot if she asks for a restart or what not), scan again and all updates for .NET 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 of the .NET .NET must appear. Choose to install.
A new analysis to ensure that they properly installed.

If all goes well, that will solve the problems you face.

Make sure you come back and let us know which method worked for you or if you still have problems, I have to run a cleaning tool.

    Good luck!

  • My computer says it is running service pack 3, but I noticed that two service pack 2 were installed. Is this right?

My computer has terrible fonctionnee and will not at all.  There a lot of errors blue screen and constant freezes.  It happens all the time.  The fact that service pack 2 is installed would be part of the problem?  Also, is it OK to enter the program records to remove a program if it does not appear in the section install/remove?  Thanks for your help.

    Hi RonGerdes,

    1. where to find two entries for service pack 2 on the computer?

    2. Since when are you the bluescreen or constant freezing on the computer?

It is possible that some third-party programs installed on the computer is causing the problem.

I suggest that you put the computer in a clean boot state and check if it helps.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

  • Where can I find the download of Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1?

I did a full restore in Win Vista Home Premium from recovery disks.  When you set the computer, I enabled Windows Update before remembered me that I had to also download Vista Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2.  Windows Update had already downloaded and installed 100 updates before I remembered.

Now, I can't find a download site for Vista Service Pack 1 and 2 on the Windows site.  Every link I click on that is inactive.

Can someone tell me where to go for Vista SP1 and SP2 downloads now that Vista is no longer supported?

    Any other ideas?

Should I still SP1 and SP2?  This computer will serve as my husband for basic e-mail, IE8 and preparation of simple Word documents.  He'll have Norton 360 installed.

Thank you very much in advance for any suggestions or advice.  Rookie mistake - I knew that Vista is no longer supported, but I never imagined that I could not download as basic as the SP1 and SP2 to Windows.  I hope that I simply found the location of the 'magic' yet.

This problem may occur if the Windows Update software distribution folder has been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please note that the file will be re-created the next time we visit the Windows Update site.

    I. close all open windows.

II. click on the "Start" button, click "all programs" and click "Accessories".

III. - click on "command prompt" and click "run as administrator".

IV. in "administrator: command prompt"window, type "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press ENTER. "

Note: Please, look at the cmd window and make sure that it is said that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder.

    V. click on the Start button, in the "Search" box, type "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press ENTER.

VI. in the opened folder, find the folder named "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution".

VII. right click on the folder, select Rename and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder.

VIII. while still in the "administrator: command prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the service Windows updates.

Note: Please, look at the cmd window and make sure that it is said that it has been started.

  • I can't delete the post of WinRar on my files that were downloaded and now I can't get anything to open

    original title: open my files

I can't delete the post of WinRar on my files that were downloaded and now I can't get anything to open

Please describe your problem in more detail. Tell us that that "cannot delete" means. Exactly how do you try? What happens when you try? If you get an error message, please quote verbatim.

Or do you mean 'change' expansion, rather than "delete." Have you tried?

And one last point: If the files have the rar extension, what are rar files. The file format does not remove or change the extension.  If you remove or change the extension, they will always be rar files. A rar file can only be successfully opened by Winrar or a compatible program.

  • I have windows xp after the installation of service pack 3 I can only start in safe mode

I have windows XP after the installation of service pack 3 I can only start in safe mode?

    Hello

    ·         You get the error message?

    ·         What happens when you try to start in normal mode?

    Method 1

Windows XP can in every start Safe Mode by default. Even if you select the option Start Windows normally, it always starts in Mode without failure. IOW, you can't get out of safe mode.

This happens if the switch/SafeBoot is added to the Boot.ini file. / SafeBoot parameter forces a boot in safe mode by using the specified parameters. The available parameters are:

    (a) minimal

    (b) network

    (c) safeboot: minimal (alternateshell)

For more information about the boot.ini switches, see visualization and correction of the settings of the boot on x 86 systems

    RESOLUTION

    (a) click Start, run and type MSCONFIG

    (b) click the Boot.ini tab

    (c) If you have a dual-boot system, select the entry that is appropriate under the [operating systems]

    (d) in section downstairs, Startup Options uncheck / hisFEBOOT

    (e) click OK

    (f) restart Windows

The entry/SafeBoot are removed from the Boot.ini file.

    Method 2:

If the above method is not the cause, it seems that Service Pack 3 is not installed correctly.

Step 1: You try to run the system restore from safe mode that will repair return the computer to the point while it was working fine.

    Hi cbelle,

Thank you for using answers Forum.

I suggest using the CheckSUR for investigating issues of update.

What is system update readiness tool? System resources, such as file of data, even in the data memory and registry data, can develop inconsistencies during the lifecycle of the operating system. These contradictions may be caused by various hardware failures or can be caused by software problems. In some cases, these inconsistencies can affect the Windows Service store, and they can cause software updates not do not work. The system update tool attempts to resolve these inconsistencies.
