Can I switch to 4 GB of ram if I have Vista 32 bit?

I have a Gateway FX - 541S with 3072 MB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and a processor Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.40 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 8 MG cache) and I want to improve my memory up to 8 GB.  I am running VISTA Home Premium 32 - bit OS.  I have to upgrade to VISTA 64 bit or WINDOWS 7 to access this additional memory?

By design, all 32-bit versions of Windows is limited to 4 GB of RAM; This 4 GB that you will see only about 2.75 GB to 3.50 GB usable RAM, the remaining RAM is reserved by the hardware you have installed. So, to use more than 4 GB of RAM, you will need to upgrade to a 64 bit version of Windows Vista.

According to the specifications below page, your system is expandable up to 8 GB of RAM, because it has 4 DIMM DDR2 slots.

However, according to the support page below, only drivers for Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) are available for your system. This can prevent you from upgrading to Windows 7.

Is there a way to make this possible?

    Thank you in advance.

PS: Sorry for my English, I'm french ^^

It depends on the chipset you have.
The 8 GB of RAM are possible with the laptop that are released with the Intel GS45 chipset.
The 4 GB of RAM are possible with Intel GS40 chipset.

AFAIK the T130-11U supports GS40 chipset and so 8 GB of RAM are NOT possible in your case.

Hi well im confused because Comet where I bought my pc from http://www.comet.co.uk/p/Computer-Base-Units/buy-HP-G5225UK-Computer-Base-Unit/681687 says taken maximum supported memory of my pc is 8 GB however, on crucial ram site he says maximum memory 4 GB so which should I believe by the way that I already ordered ram so yes but if it turns out it does not work , then they said they will refund me anyway what is yet to come, so I want to know what is right. Thank you

    Hello:

Interesting that there is conflicting information from HP.

I guess that it will take 8 GB then.

You will always need a 64-bit operating system to take advantage of more than 4 GB of memory, and according to the technical data sheet that you provided, it will be to come up with this (Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit).

  • Can I switch to 8 GB?

    Hello

I have a DELL Vostro 3550 with serial number [deleted by privacy policy]. can I switch to 8 GB of RAM?

I already have two 2 GB modules. Are there any specific brand of RAM should I choose?

    Help is appreciated.

    Thanks adavance

    Ramesh Chandra

    Hi Rchakkilam,

Thanks for your post.  Vostro 3550 has a maximum of 6 GB taken in charge by the factory.  However, I have seen other users say that they have upgraded to 8 GB without problems.  The part number for 4 GB memory modules is A3558401-BD.  Because Dell is no longer manufactures the Vostro, you watch 3rd third party sites to, like Crucial.com or Parts - People.com for memory.

    I hope this helps.

  • Can I switch to Win 7 SP1 of Vista Home Basic (without Service Pack)?

Hello, currently I run Vista home basic 32-bit without the service Pack installed. I did once try and install but I got was a never-ending startup sequence (the BONES do not start) and I had to restore a backup copy of previous Vista before installing SP1. So it's just a quick question: can I go directly to Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit SP1 without having all the service packs currently? I don't have a lot of free time to do a clean install and restore programs and games, and configure them.

Microsoft recommends that you have at least Service Pack 1 installed.

You can try to install without MS, if you wish.

And if you have a problem, follow this information.

Click Start > right click on computer > left click on properties > see if you have Vista 32 bit or Vista 64-bit installed.

Then, choose the download of 'bit' OK to use to install Service Packs, first of all the installation of SP1.

  • Can I switch the RAM to 8 GB on my Satellite U400?

I have never thought or belived him (my friend) when he tells me that I don't know if I can switch to 8 GB of RAM.
But I told him of course I can, I have Toshiba u400,
When I scanned from a site so it show that I have more than 4 GB RAM.

If someone please tell me what I can or?

    thnx.

    Hi mate

I have fine book besides U400

    Back to your question;
I doubt that the 8 GB of RAM are possible I think 4 GB is the limit
Upgrading RAM usually depends on the chipset and BIOS.

You should check your page on Intel chipset you can find detailed information on the amount of RAM is possible
