Can not defragment my hard drive, stuck at 18%

Original title: defragment my hard drive.

Hello, I am running windows 7 pro and cannot defragment my hard drive. He had the same percentage on it seems like forever. 18%.

my laptop is a few years old and was never Defrag. can someone help me please. Thank you

Disk cleanup has little benefit unless the disc is more than 50% full.  It's rare.  The vast majority use somewhere around 25% of their disk capacity.  The value of defragmentation is improved performance and rarely has real value by returning more useful disk space.  If the drive is only complete, it is likely to be slow performance and may not even have enough space to perform the defragmentation.

You want MORE not fewer restore points.  This gives you the best choice when things go wrong.  Here's what I recommend on this subject:

Restore points

The amount allocated to the point area by restoration by default in Windows 7 is 3% of the capacity of the disk.  In almost all cases, the computer uses but a small part of the available space.  This makes it very convenient to raise that 3% to say 8-10%.  This strategy will give a lot more restore points that will give you much more flexibility to recover a bad situation.

To change the award, type create in the text box above the start planet.  Select create a restore point.  Click set up.  Move the slider to the right as you see fit.  Definition it to 50 gigabytes will have no effect if you have a 500 GB drive and use only about 100 or so, which is very typical.

  • I can't defragment my hard drive, even though I cancelled the chkdsk command.

Whenever I have try to defragment my HARD drive, I get the Error Message: Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on this volume (c). Please run Chkdsk/f. I ran, canceled regular for the C: drive, but I still get the same error message whenever I try to run Disk Defragmenter. What else should I do to fix this?

When you try to defragment a volume of that Disk Defragmenter reports:

Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (c :))

    Please run Chkdsk /f.

This means that the volume that you want to defragment was marked 'dirty' XP.  This is not necessarily all of the data has been lost on the volume, it simply means that XP thinks that the volume should be checked to find errors because of something that happened before.

You won't be able to defragment the volume until the dirty bit has been removed.

This does not mean that a disk check is scheduled to run, and you can't cancel what needs to happen in this case because this isn't the problem.

Also the dirty bit is not set on a volume, you can still run a disk defrag with a record of date of arrival in the meantime (try).

Entry of commands to reset or erase a disc awaiting review is therefore a waste of time - that is not the problem.

A volume can be marked as dirty, if the system underwent a power interruption (power failure, pulling plug, removing the battery, button / stop), abandoned restart or an abnormal termination.  One of these events?

When XP starts, it automatically checks the bit of impurity on each volume.  You can also tell XP to ignore the bit of impurity on any volume, but this probably isn't a good idea in case there is a real problem that needs to be fixed.  If you have a hard drive where the dirty bit will not disappear, you can tell XP not to check.

If the starting XP detects that the volume is dirty, it will be automatically run the check disk with error correction (chkdsk/r) and try to fix the problems detected.

If the chkdsk command succeeds, it clears the dirty bit, and then you can defragment the volume.

You can check the status of your bit of impurity from a command prompt window.

To do this, click Start, run and enter in the box:

    cmd

Click OK to open a command prompt window.

For example, to query the bit of impurity on drive C, type:

    fsutil dirty query C:

    The sample output:
    Volume c is dirty
    Volume C: is dirty

Is the volume of your sale or it is not dirty?

You cannot use fsutil or chkntfs from a command prompt to delete the bit of impurity on a volume.

The only thing that can clear the bit of impurity on a volume is chkdsk /r (or chkdsk/p).  You could tell XP not to check the bit of impurity on a volume where the dirty bit does not erase, but this probably isn't a good idea since there is some sort of problem on the volume.

You also won't solve this problem by editing your registry database - not where is the problem.

Once a volume is marked as dirty, the only way to clear the dirty bit is to run "chkdsk/r" or "chkdsk/p" when the volume is not in use.  The only way a volume can not be used while XP is just starting to load or from the XP Recovery Console.

If XP will not run chkdsk correctly when your system restarts or the dirty bit will not erase as it should, you need to look in the Event Viewer log chkdsk and see what is happening and fix it.

If XP will not always clear the dirty bit, you need to run chkdsk/r of the XP Recovery Console so you can look and see what works and run it again until it works.

If you need help in doing this, I'm sure a technical support engineer can tell you how, and if not, I'll give you instructions.

  • Windows CD can not find installed hard drives

I have a PC that has windows XP installed and worked well and I have DSL so I kept it updated. It has been updated for the updates. It was a month that it seemed hung on a windows update and I've finally powered down to exit the update mode. After that, he would finally in XP but would not other that the busy when an icon is clicked. I decided to reload XP using the same CD I used originally when I built PC. It will load the drivers to install XP, but when installing windows is selected it says no hard drives found. When booting 2 HARD disks are displayed, but are not detected when you look in the BIOS. I've tried changes in the BIOS as auto detect HDD including default BIOS and not go. I remembered to change a partition using Partition magic 8.0 and decided that might be the problem, so I started in the magic of partition and formatted part C of the HDD in NTFS, but the results are the same. Any suggestion is appreciated. TIA

Do you mean you see a message like this?

Setup did not find any hard drives installed in your computer. Make sure that the hard drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any hardware configuration of the drives is correct. This may involve a diagnosis provided by the manufacturer or the installer running. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.

If the disks are not appearing in BIOS, it seems unlikely that XP will be able to see them no more.

Describe the best you can, your hard disk configuration...  IDE, SATA, SCSI, RAID configurations...

You build the hardware yourself or is it a system store bought?

Are you able to determine when the system turns on, the brand and model of your motherboard and the BIOS it is running?

Without more information, I can only offers these general reflections where to search:

When you see a message like this, obviously the XP installation starts to load, but then when the installation program needs to go out and find your hard drive is not find the hard drive.  It means not necessarily your hard drive is defective and if it worked before, it's probably still plugged.  It simply means that the installation of XP is not able to find it.

Looks like you need enter the BIOS on your system by pressing the 'Delete', F2, F10 or F12 key (what the key is good for your system), find the section where the types of hard disks and hard disk interfaces are configured and temporarily change the setting so the XP installation is able to find the hard drive.

Where to find the accommodation and how to change depends on your system manufacturer and the version of the BIOS, so you end up having to look at her.  If you know your system brand and model, we can probably help you find a job.

You must locate and change the interface mode to your hard drive in the BIOS so that when installing XP loading, it will be able to locate the hard drive.

Before making adjustments, you should take note of what are the current BIOS settings, so you can change when you are finished.

The adjustment varies so here are some examples that I have accumulated:

The adjustment is done in the BIOS and could be in Integrated Peripherals, Configuration of SATA, SATA Mode device.  After you make the changes, save them and restart your XP installation program.

If you find that the mode is set on the RAID/SATA mode, change the IDE mode.

If you find that the mode is set to AHCI, change the ATA mode.

If you find that the mode is set to AHCI emulation Mode, change the IDE emulation mode.

If you find that the mode is set to SATA, SATA mode off or change the ATA mode.

If you find that the mode is set to SATA Native Mode, disable the native SATA Mode.

If you find that the mode is set on AHCI/RAID Autodetect, change the combination mode.

If find you the setting that works for you, I would like to know what it is so I can add it to my notes.

Do, or do not. There is no test.

  • can not defragment my SYSTEM drive

    Hello.

I have a g6 Pavilion. I have more than three quarters of my unused hard drive space. I scanned for virus etc using my Norton 360.

When I defragment my disk, HP support assistant allows me to defragment my C drive but not my SYSTEM drive, which is now 5% frag. This frag appeared last week.

    Help, please.

I learned to check for disc defects, I must now do, but if there are no disk errors, what do I do next.

    Thank you.

    Hello

This device was equipped with a SATA HDD. This might be a reason why it of not possible to install Linux. It takes the drivers before you continue to the installation of the OS.
Unfortunately Toshiba doesn't support Linux and you will not be able to find the Linux drivers on the Toshiba site.

  • Cannot install windows XP it said hard drives are not connected & windows can not find the hard drives

I got an asus computer notebook windows vista, upgrade from vista to windows 7, now I'm not able to do a clean install of windows xp, when I try to install XP, it says that hard drives are not connected & windows cannot find not the hard drives, so once again installed windows 7, is there a way to overcome this problem Why do I get the message windows xp does not detect hard drives? I even formatted the hard drive & tried to install Xp, but still, I get the same message.

    The answers will be appreciated...

    Thank you

Because the Windows XP installation CD does not have the necessary disk controller drivers.  You will need a floppy drive to provide the drivers of controller for the installation program, or you will need to burn a CD of Windows XP with the controller drivers slipstreamed into the installation.  A CD of Windows XP with SP2 included may have the necessary drivers.

Hello. I can't defragment my hard drive. After you have installed the CC29 firmware for my 3 TB Seagate drive that vastly improved read/write speeds, I can't defragment. I checked with seatools and Windows errors nothing no problem. The drive is recognized by windows as it is listed in my computer, but when I go to defrag it does not show on the list.
