  When I first installed Win7 Pro on my laptop, it created a homegroup with a password. Since I would add this laptop to my domain, I did not pay any attention to the homegroup password. A few weeks later, the hard drive failed. I bought a new hard drive, reinstalled Win 7 Pro and the laptop back in the field. Not much.

  I have two desktop computers that I have installed Win 7 Pro on. I'm trying to get both of them to be in a homegroup, and two of them tell me that a homegroup already exists and I get only an option to join the homegroup. The problem is the residential group they see is one that was created on Windows 7 environment of the laptop hard disk that failed. I have no way to get the password for this homegroup, and, from what I can tell the last 4 hours of Googling, no way to create a new homegroup. I don't know where these two systems Win7 Homegroup info they see, so I don't know how to take it off so I can get one of them to create a new group of residential.

  Because my laptop is in a domain, the option to display the homegroup password is grayed out.  Anyone has any ideas I can:

  1. start search to find where the two workstations get residential group information.
  2 remove the existing residential group so I can create a new one.

  I had this same problem and found a solution. I deleted a file called "idstore.sst.new" in the path: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking and stopped and resumed the service 'HomeGroupProvider' in the Task Manager and the Services tab. After that, just go to control panel > HomeGroup and gave the opportunity to create a new homegroup.  I hope this helps!

  Yes, you can create your own group and assign permissions to the group. I suggest you try the following steps.

  a. on the desktop, right click my computer and then click on manage.

  b. in the maintenance window of the computer, under System Tools, expand local users and groups.

  c. right-click groups, and then click New Group.

  d. in the new Group dialog box, do the following:

  Group name:   Type the name of the group you want to create.

  Description: Optionally, type a description for this group account.
          
      Add:     Click Add to select the members to add to the group.
  Add the user accounts that you want for the management group.

  e. click on create.

  f. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for other required administrator groups.

  g. click Close.

  h. click the folder groups and verify that the groups you want to create from the list.
