Cannot change default programs in Windows 7 it is grayed

(Also in Panel) start > Default Programs - so-called you can "set your default programs", "associate any type of file or portocol with a program" and so on.

The problem is that you can not do that because it is all grayed out.   I want to have access.  How to gain access?

I do not have many changes in windows 7.   My work takes more time to achieve because of these changes.  Frustrating

I have a user who is running windows 7 64 bit which cannot change default programs. This only happens on the computer if it is connect. So I think it has something to do with his profile.  I noticed that when I go in the Panel and click default programs on associated with a file type I can choose the new program, but it will not save.

We just migrated to a new domain and transferred all the user profiles with the Microsoft migration tool.

  • Cannot change default programs as an administrator

I opened the JPEG files for the past 6 months with a program called FSViewer, but yesterday when I did it, the file is opened with a Windows program that is basically useless. I tried to reset the default value, but the program, FSviewer will not appear in the list once I selected it, I tried also in Control Panel by using the Folder Options. Does not allow me to change it. If I log in as a guest or with another account, no problem, I can change the default program, but it only works in other accounts and not as my main account, which is also administrator of the computer. I also tried to change another account limited to the administrator of the computer, and it allows me to change the default settings of the program without problem. If I change my main account to limited, it still does not change the default program. I guess I could remove the primary account/computer Manager, and start again, but I'd rather not. I am able to download and install programs, but not able to change the default programs.

How can I get my main account to change default programs?

  • Cannot change network type in Windows 8

How can I change a network or private so that file sharing is allowed? I thought that you could click on it from pop to subwindow network on the right side of the screen, but only my physical network connection is listed.

    More details:

I have a physical Ethernet connection which is defined as a private network. Sharing files and any other communication on my LAN works fine. I also have a virtual connection through LogMeIn Hamachi which is defined as a public network. I can't find a way to change this. How to change network type in Windows 7 does not work in Windows 8.

Once, I was able to change the type of Ethernet from the public to the private network by selecting that I wanted to turn on sharing. Although now I cannot access the menu to change that pop on the pane by clicking on the icon of simple network. I was also able to do it once with the Hamachi network, but only the physical card network seemed to save the change after a while. At a time the network Hamachi was not identified, but he has switched back to show as a public network. That's if everything goes though temporary and can be another problem together.

I don't want to make an exception in my firewall, or make registry changes that specify all unidentified networks are established privately (two suggestions I found on the web so far).

So it took me a while to find this also, I fixed it by searching for troubleshooting as suggested above. In troubleshooting search box (top right) type homegroup, and then select the resolution of the problems of the residential group, even if you're not using home group, part of the diagnosis allows you to change the type of network from public to private/home, I jumped the diagnostic network also step and allowed me to very easily change the type of network.

  • Adobe Reader DC is on my selection of default program in Windows 8.1 riding

I just downloaded and installed Adobe Reader DC. Unfortunately there is more up my ability to select my existing Adobe Pro 9.0 as default program to open PDF files with. Even if I selected the Pro 9.0 in the Windows 8.1 Control Panel AND the control panel (associated with a file of type w / a program) seems to acknowledge that selection, all of my PDF files open w / DC Adobe except IF I right click on each file when I want to open and select Pro 9.0 manually. Adobe Pro 9.0 does not yet appear as a selection in the dialog to set your default programs.

How can I resolve this short of uninstalling Adobe DC?

Having essentially versions Acrobat and Reader before X installed is not really possible.

However, you can always set the file association to Acrobat 9.x; either by

    1. using the Windows http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/choose-programs-windows-uses-default feature
    2. repair of Acrobat
    3. Update Acrobat version 9.5.5
