cannot inflate vmdk

Hello

I have a VMDK file which I guess was created using VMware Workstation. This VMDK is thin.

I copied the file on a VMFS volume accessible to my ESX 3.5 boxes.

When I try to pump up the drive, I have the following message:

vmkfstools-j DWHULE_E.vmdk

The virtual disk (DWHULE_E.vmdk) cannot be inflated type: & lt; 2 & gt; capacity: & lt; 268435456000 & gt; used space: & lt; 50275221504 & gt;.

The VMFS volume was 551 GB of free space.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards

Daniel

Oh, just missed that you copied. Use VMware Converter to convert ESX VM Workstation VM.

    Hi team,

I have ESX 3.5, I tried the option of the VC to expand the hard disk (drive c), and clicked on ok, it is said the reconfig finished, but when I change the settings of the machine virtual and verified that it did not the new size, it shows just the old size. I am aware about the other option via the command, but want to know why the VC does not change the size of the disk.

    Thank you

Are there snapshots of this VM? You cannot extend vmdk if stereotypes are present.

  • Cannot expand vmdk

    Hi all

I have a problem when trying to expand a vmdk, either using the graphical interface or by using the command line vmware-vdiskmanager-x.

When using the console, trying to expand the GB 8.00 to 20.00 G disc, I get this error: "reconfigure Virtual Machine" has not completed. If these problems persist... with detail "not enough space on the data store."

The VMDK in question exist on partitions with & gt; 100 GB of free space, this is also the case with the partition of the host operating system or elsewhere, we might be trying to write to.

I noticed a few curious things:

The virtual disk is 8 GB, however the hard (-flat.vmdk, actually) is close to 27 GB in the host file system.  I corruption any?

For this virtual disk, I have a VirtualHost.vmdk and VirtualHost_flat.vmdk.  The first file is a few hundred bytes, while the _flat is the file ~ 27 GB.  The docs for vmware-vdiskmanager refer to the file _flat; I guess I should be after his convention anyway and the vmware-vdiskmanager x - operation on the normal Virtual.vmdk file?

And again, the _flat file contains clear data, but why is is a lot wider than the 8.00 GB VMWare recognizes?

    Thanks in advance...

    Drew

I've never seen such a problem. The descriptor file clearly indicates a virtual disk of 8 GB ('RW 16777216 DISH... (': (16777216 * 512) / 1024 ^ 3 = 8). And the physical file can be more significant than that...

I suggest you replace this vmdk, via a conversion either by cloning it.

    Good luck!

  • cannot mount vmdk (Linux) with write permissions

    Hello world

I have a little trouble using vmware-mount to mount a vmdk of 50 GB size dynamic that has been created using VMWare Studio. The vmdk is a Ubuntu Linux 8.04, and it is the ext3 file system. Also, I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 to mount the vmdk. I can mount the vmdk, but no matter what I do - it's a read-only file system.

The main reason why I need write access to a new unit, created from VMWare studio is so that I can update the license files without having to build a tremendous amount of devices different everything due to a slight change in a XML file for licenses...

-Libfuse is installed and running (obviously, since I can get read-only). I made sure I ran "# chmod 755 system.vmdk" so that it has write permissions.

-If I go up the vmdk, say I have this: "cd/mnt/root; Touch test; "on the first time, it will actually create the file (at least it seems), if I try to do it again, I get ' touch: can't touch 'test': read-only file system"... " However if I create a file, and then unmount/back, the file has not been actually created.

I'll follow up with an attached fuseMount.log, but in the meantime - someone has an idea?

    Thank you

    draygen

What type of VMDK is there, not a drive compressed (i.e. optimized flows) type by any chance? You can not write on these discs.

  • Cannot resize vmdk

Hi, I would like to resize a vmdk file.

This vmdk is 50 GB with 2 linux partitions.

I reduced this partition with gparted to 25GB.

But now, I want to reduce the size of the vmdk file. But using vmware converter, I don't have the ability to resize the disk. The option is not to activate.

Is this normal? Is there another method to resize the vmdk file?

    Concerning

Another way to resize your disk vmdk can be:

the concept is: create a nrew disk resized and a third party image so (example Hiren) allows you to copy the disc. Finally, disconnect the big disk and start the virtual machine with the new drive.

If you want to rename your vmdk file to maintain correct namig:

Unplug your vmdk virtual machine drive

Rename the hard and - flat.vmdk with new names. (the command is mv oldfile.vmdk newfile.vmdk)

NewFile.VMDK Edit with vi or nano and change in the new file descriptor - flat.vmdk. Save, and then reconnect the new disk to the virtual machine

  • Trying to loop-Script vmkfstools

    Hi people,

I'm about to spend ESXi 3.5 4.0, so as a precaution I would like to create backups of my VMDK. I have a number of machines virtual present., so I will try to automate this process with a simple loop of the service console ESXi (not supported). Just trying to copy the VMDK to a data store to another store of data mounted via this method:

for i ' find. -name "*.vmdk" '; do

    vmkfstools-i $i thin d... /datastore2/$ I

    fact

Unfortunately, I get all sorts of error messages, such as busy resource, etc., during an attempt of this method. I even tried to close all virtual machines, while I do this, but it does not help. Either said by the way, try the command specifically based on files works fine. I wanted to just automate it... Any ideas where I'm wrong?

Edit: it just occurred to me that I would have to first create the destination directory structure as vmkfstools won't for me as the destination argument. I will test and post back with the script changed so I managed.

Edit2: yep, it worked like a champ. This is the script:

for i ' find. -type of; do

    mkdir - p /datastore2/$ I

    fact

for i ' find. -name "*.vmdk" '; do

    vmkfstools-i $i thin d... /datastore2/$ I

    fact

Now, that which remains is to copy auxiliary files, I want to do with one another similar to what routine above, making all-purpose PC '-u' update option to prevent files hard.

You cannot copy VMDK for VMS which are turned on unless you have taken a snapshot of first. If you want to automate the process take a look at the excellent lamw scenario.

This error message generally if the hard files have been copied hosted as VMware Workstation product, which uses a format of sparse file that is not supported on an ESXi host. Instead of the hard copy, you can use VMware Converter, or - if you prefer - you can convert the hard using vmware-vdiskmanager (before transfer) or vmkfstools (after downloading). I deal to use vmkfstools you will need to load the mutliextent module (see for example "Clone or migration operations involving virtual discs non-VMFS on ESXi fail with an error" vSphere 5.1 Release Notes)

  • Workstation cannot find the VMDK file, but it exists.

I backed up a Windows 7 year last to Carbonite. He had several defined virtual machines and I now have to watch a Windows 7 computer. I downloaded and unpacked the entire file, I think. When I try to run it with my computer it says

    Could not open the folder "D:\Windows 7 Vaio\Windows 7.vmdk":

The system cannot find the specified file.

But the file is actually in the folder where it is looking and he had the same name. Why can't he see the file? How can I solve this problem?

Depending on the file format of the virtual disk, virtual disk may consist of several hard files, and the error can occur because of one or more of the required . VMDK files is not being restored. If the . a VMDK file is a small text file, it must contain the names of all the -s #. VMDK files.

The virtual machine is more listed in VCentre (I tried to delete data store manager), I believe that files can be locked for a reason, but I don't know enough to determine whether it is safe to kill the s pid which seem to use the folder:

You can restart the services... There will be no impact to the VMS running... also try to restart VMware vCenter services (services.msc)

If the above does not work, then restart the host seems to be the fastest and the most secure option.

After selecting OK, I then received the second attached message, "Current Message.png", which reads... "your virtual machine has not returned because of an error.  If you believe that the error is correctable and you want to keep the suspended state, so you can correct the mistake, after that the virtual machine is turned off, select Preserve.  To ignore the waking state, select reject. »

I didn't do anything since getting this second message because I do not know which to choose.

In this case I'd throw away them.

If after following your excellent detailed instructions & explanation (thank you!), here is what happened...

As the machine has begun to resume in a suspended state, that asked me if I moved or copied and I selected, copied.

In cases like this (restore a Machine virtual sauvegardΘ) the correct answer to this question is "I moved it" even thought "I copied it" seams more logical, it is not the right answer but with the advent of the second error message, not caused by the answer to the first question, no answer would have mattered.

(if I can just get my prospects for work with this virtual machine files, your help would be invaluable!)

This Virtual Machine is always recoverable, however if you are only interested in the recovery of data from the user then after reading the following quit VMware Fusion and try to mount the virtual disk to the Virtual Machine using the information below.

Take a look at: VMware Fusion (menu bar) > help > Search > type VMDKMounter, and then select use VMDKMounter to mount a virtual drive as a Mac Volume

Notice, ignore the parts on "to add support for reading / writing to NTFS volumes, you need to install NTFS - 3G separately." as it is not necessary for recovering files within the VM using VMDKMounter, because you only need read access to retrieve data from the user.

After obtaining your user data disassemble the virtual hard disk on the desktop and then after that you want to retrieve the VM using methods from another just let know us and additional directions can be given.

    Hello
you mean that the disc type is "raw"?

then I would then start again with your EP and then run the "testdisk" tool - it can recreate the partitiontable if it is lost.

You don't need to build a MOU with "testdisk" - you can download it and safe in ramdrive and then run it from there
