  Windows update no longer works if you do not have Windows XP SP3 installed, especially after a clean installation with a CD that has service pack 2 only. The installation CD most have xp sp2 so the best practice is to have XP SP3, copied to a USB drive before the reinstallation and as is the case with your system, it is advisable to have also the package upgrade for processors not intel record in thumb drive too.   What seems, that's the problem? Drivers SATA Windows XP or something else with hard drives?

  I have done a complete reinstallation of Windows XP Pro from the original disc and managed to update to SP2.  However, when I tried to upgrade to SP3, I got an error that "the site has encountered a problem and cannot display the page.  I tried all the suggested fixes that I can find.

  During the last attempt, I discovered that several dll is missing.  Here's the msxml6.dll, wups2.dll, c:\windows\system32\wucltux.dll and c:\windows\system32\wuwebv.dll.  If they are critical, where can I find them, and how do I get support.

  In addition, mshtml.dll is available, but the DllRegisterServer could not find an entry point.  Is this critical?

  In any case, I still can I install Microsoft Update or download/install SP3.

  The computer is an IBM R50e laptop.

  As much as I know, only Windows Update cannot be run in safe mode. That being said, I saw where install several updates may conflict with each other. Try to disable all updates installation and install the updates failed one at a time.
