  I am running Vista Home Premium. When I try to open Word attachments in Windows Mail it tells me that this type of file (DOC) is not associated with a program. However, it is associated with Word (which is installed). I saw in this forum that IE8 was a conflict, so I went back to IE7, but I still can't get Windows Mail to open Word attachments. All other types of file open correctly. If I save the attachment Word elsewhere he opened in Word very well. Help!

  Unopened messages remain in a box.

  Go to tools | Options and uncheck the option to send and receive at startup.  See if that takes care of the problem.  He might try to receive before its ready.  Also check your settings under Tools | Accounts and checking accounts are configured correctly.  You can also try compacting and repairing the database to clear up all the weird questions (see www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) and look out for interference of program part 3 (see www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3).

  Then locate the antivirus interference (there are a number of antivirus which are not compatible with Windows Mail programs).  See point 3 on the same page: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

  Then try to empty your temporary Internet files of Internet Explorer (Tools |) Internet Options | Delete files).

  Then compact and repair the Windows Mail database (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/)

  See it if you can save attachments (keep it before opening).  Note (point 3 above) you will need to remove and add your e-mail account, if the antivirus is interfering.

  I tried all that on the previous thread for the same problem and I can not open attachments. I have no problem with attachments in Internet Explorer. It looks like a problem of FireFox for me.

  It is somewhere between quite unlikely and very little probable that you will find anywhere.  When you open a document from the email that you open a temporary copy of the file, and unless you use "Save as" to save to a network drive or a location on your hard drive, this temporary copy is the one that is being updated.  In general, as soon as you close the e-mail message or e-mail program, the temporary copy went forever.

  You could try a search on your hard drive, including indexed and hidden locations and the files system and records, but it is not likely that you will find.
